Abstract It has been previously reported that dietary fish oils, which are rich in the polyunsaturated fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, can exert beneficial effects in inflammatory bowel disease. In this study, we investigated the effects of docosahexaenoic acid–derived lipid mediator maresin 1 (MaR1) in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)– and 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid–induced colitis in mice. Systemic treatment with MaR1 significantly attenuated both DSS- and 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene ...

Cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2) activation is suggested to trigger the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) pathway, and agonists of both receptors improve colitis. Recently, the plant metabolite (E)-β-caryophyllene (BCP) was shown to bind to and activate CB2. In this study, we examined the anti-inflammatory effect of BCP in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis and analyzed whether this effect was mediated by CB2 and PPARγ. Oral treatment with BCP reduced disease activity, colonic ...

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is an inflammatory cytokine known to modulate muscle pain. However, the mechanisms underlying this effect still remain unclear. Here we show that the injection of IL-6 into mice gastrocnemius muscle evoked a time- and dose-dependent mechanical hyperalgesia. This effect is in part dependent on the presence of gp130 expression in inflammatory cells in the gastrocnemius muscle as well as in DRG neurons. We also demonstrated an increased inflammatory cell recruitment and cytokines ...

Abstract The incidence of acute hepatitis C has decreased in the world. However, new cases are still reported. The objective of this study was to obtain data of acute hepatitis C in Brazil and to identify risk factors of transmission, diagnostic criteria, clinical presentation, evolution, and treatment. A questionnaire was sent to all members of the Brazilian Society of Hepatology. Sixteen centers participated with a total of 170 cases between 2000 and 2008. Among them, 37 had chronic renal failure ...

This study aimed to investigate the use of maximum eye surface temperature (ESTmax), recorded by infrared thermography, as an indicator of physical fitness in ranch horses. Data collection was carried out with 16 horses by recording six physical fitness biomarkers (ESTmax, respiratory rate, creatine kinase activity [CK], and concentrations of total serum protein, plasmatic cortisol, and lactate) before and after a regular working day. We also recorded heart rate during the exercise, exercise duration, ...

Endocrine system plays a major role in the control of reproductive functions which are regulated by the hypothalamus–pituitary–gonad axis and its interactions. FSH and LH receptor genes are expressed at the gonads and GnRH receptor gene is expressed at the anterior pituitary gland. Misense mutations of the FSH, LH or GnRH receptors, activating or inactivating their functions in mammals, are potentially useful to allow the understanding of the role of this group of gonadotropins in reproductive phenotypes ...

Various strategies have been proposed to reduce the cement space of foundation restorations for endodontically treated teeth. However, they may add more operative steps, or the dentist must keep different sizes of drills and posts in stock. Methylmercury (MeHg) exposure is a serious problem of public health, especially in the Amazon. Exposure in riverine populations is responsible for neurobehavioral abnormalities. It was hypothesized that consumption of Amazonian fruits could protect by reducing mercury accumulation. Abstract Inflammatory mediators are released from injured tissues being responsible for the first steps of inflammatory processes. Multidrug efflux transporters, members of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) family, are ubiquitously expressed. ABCC molecules transport several endogenous substances, including leukotriene C4 (LTC4) and PGE2, which are involved in zymosan-induced inflammation. The present study investigated the role played by ABCC transporters on zymosan-induced peritonitis in mice. Most ...

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive, demyelinating inflammatory disease of the human central nervous system (CNS). While the primary symptoms of MS affect motor function, it is now recognized that chronic pain is a relevant symptom that affects both animals and MS patients. Kinins, notably bradykinin (BK) acting through B1 (B1R) and B2 (B2R) receptors, play a central ...
