Abstract Endophytic fungi isolated from the red seaweed Bostrychia radicans were studied to identify their molecularly diverse and biologically active natural chemical products. Abstract Crude extracts of Rutales species were tested in vitro against the trypomastigote form of Trypanosoma cruzi at 4 mg/mL, and 20% of them showed significant activity (80%). An evaluation of the results of the Brazilian experience in colorectal laparoscopic procedures in a multicenter prospective protocol done by the Brazilian Society of Colo-Proctology is presented. From December 1991 to August 1998, 1,161 patients (583 men and 578 women; mean age, 49.8 years), were operated on laparoscopically. The methanol extract of stems of Trichilia claussenii yielded three new steroids: 2α,3α-dihydroxyandrostan-16-one 2β,19-hemiketal, 2α,3β-dihydroxypregnan-16-one 2β,19-hemiketal, 2β,3β-dihydroxypregnan-16-one. Two known steroids 2β,3β,4β-trihydroxypregnan-16-one, 2α,3α,4β-trihydroxypregnan-16-one and a mixture of sitosterol and stigmasterol β-O-d-glucopyranosides were also isolated. The zero-valent iron (ZVI) mediated degradation of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) was studied under oxic condition. Operational parameters such as ZVI concentration and initial pH value were evaluated. The known antibiotic and cytotoxic compounds griseorhodin A (1) and griseorhodin C (2) were produced in solid culture by Streptomyces puniceus AB10, which was isolated from the leaf-cutter ant Acromyrmex rugosus rugosus.
