Studies in alpine environments have shown that chemical weathering and clay mineral formation are mainly controlled by climate and vegetation. However, few studies have focused specifically on pedogenesis in tropical high mountains. We evaluated pedogenic processes and weathering intensity by physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of soils under different vegetation types across a climatic gradient (east/west) in the Northern Cordillera Blanca, Peru. We established 2 catenas and sampled ...

The aim of this study was to obtain and characterize biodegradable films of cassava starch plasticized with glycerol and reinforced with nanocellulose from coconut fibers. The mechanical and physical-chemical properties of the nano-biocomposites films obtained were evaluated. The method used to investigate the viability of incorporating coconut nanocellulose in films was applied through a statistical design of the response surface of 17 formulations containing three independent variables (starch, ...

New organic–inorganic hybrids were prepared by a sol–gel method from the biopolymer chitosan and a silane coupling agent, 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (ICPTES), in which covalent bridges, essentially composed of urea, bond the chitosan to the poly(siloxane) network. The structural characterization of the advanced chitosan–siloxane hybrids was performed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and 29Si and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance. The presence of siloxane nanodomains ...

Abstract An automated multicommutated flow system for the spectrophotometric determination of clomipramine in pharmaceutical preparations was developed. The method was based on the oxidation of clomipramine by ammonium monovanadate in acidic medium yielding a coloured product with an absorbance maximum at 620 nm. The reaction development was enhanced when the binary sampling approach was exploited to insert the sample into the carrier stream. This approach, consisting of the intercalation of small ...

Layer‐by‐Layer (LbL) assembly is a simple and highly versatile method to modify surfaces and fabricate robust and highly‐ordered nanostructured coatings over almost any type of substrate. Such versatility enables the incorporation of a plethora of building blocks, including materials exhibiting switchable properties, in a single device through a multitude of complementary intermolecular interactions. Switchable materials may undergo reversible physicochemical changes in response to a variety of external ...

Pharmaceutical compounds such as ketoprofen, diclofenac and atenolol are frequently detected at relatively high concentrations in secondary effluents from wastewater treatment plants. Therefore, it is important to assess their transformation kinetics and intermediates in subsequent disinfection processes, such as direct ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The photodegradation kinetics of these compounds using a medium pressure (MP) lamp was assessed in pure water, as well as in filtered and unfiltered treated ...

Due to an increase in the incidence of leishmaniases worldwide, the development of new strategies such as prophylactic vaccines to prevent infection and decrease the disease have become a high priority. Classic vaccines against leishmaniases were based on live or attenuated parasites or their subunits. Therefore, the use of Leishmania peptides to design more specific vaccines against leishmaniases ...

To unravel the functional impact of progressive stress in cortico-limbic networks we measured neural activity and spectral coherences between the ventral hippocampus (vHIP) and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in rats subjected to short term (STS) and chronic unpredictable stress (CUS). CUS exposure consistently disrupted the spectral coherence between both areas for a wide range of frequencies, ...

The 2015 Lancet Commission on global surgery identified surgery and anaesthesia as indispensable parts of holistic health-care systems. However, COVID-19 exposed the fragility of planned surgical services around the world, which have also been neglected in pandemic recovery planning. This study aimed to develop and validate a novel index to support local elective surgical system strengthening and address growing backlogs.

With the increase of distance learning, in general, and e-learning, in particular, having a system capable of determining the engagement of students is of primordial importance, and one of the biggest challenges, both for teachers, researchers and policy makers. Here, we present a system to detect the engagement level of the students. It uses only information provided by the typical built-in web-camera present in a laptop computer, and was designed to work in real time. We combine information about ...

Cell-based therapy is a promising treatment to favor tissue healing through less invasive strategies. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) highlighted as potential candidates due to their angiogenic, anti-apoptotic and immunomodulatory properties, in addition to their ability to differentiate into several specialized cell lines. Cells can be carried through a biological delivery system, such as fibrin glue, which acts as a temporary matrix that favors cell-matrix interactions and allows local and paracrine ...

This work evaluated the production of biogas and methane (CH4) through the anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) of primary sludge (PS) from sewage treatment, food waste (FW), and crude glycerol (GL). To address the effect of the latter on AcoD stability and performance, biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests were carried out at different GL concentrations (1 and 3% v/v). Control experiments with PS or PS + FW were also performed. A modified Gompertz model was used to describe biogas/methane production behaviour. ...

The development of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines has raised several concerns regarding venous thromboembolism, namely cerebral venous thrombosis. Although cerebral venous thrombosis has been reported after administration of a viral vector vaccine, due to a possible auto-immune mechanism inducing thrombocytopenia, the same has not happened in mRNA vaccines. We report two cases of cerebral venous thrombosis, shortly after administration of mRNA vaccine. In both patients, there was no evidence of thrombocytopenia ...

This work turns the social resilience concept into a practical and tangible set of dimensions and indicators for social resilience assessment. It further provides an analysis of the social resilience concept in the context of flood risk governance. Floods are a worldwide recurring phenomenon that causes severe social, economic and environmental losses.
