There were gaps between guidelines and practice when surgery was the only treatment for aortic stenosis (AS). This study analyzed the decision to intervene in patients with severe AS in the EORP VHD (EURObservational Research Programme Valvular Heart Disease) II survey. Among 2,152 patients with severe AS, 1,271 patients with high-gradient AS who were symptomatic fulfilled a Class I recommendation for intervention according to the 2012 European Society of Cardiology guidelines; the primary end point ...

2-O-Acyl protected-d-ribo-3-uloses reacted with [(ethoxycarbonyl)methylene]triphenylphosphorane in acetonitrile to afford regio- and stereoselectively 2-(Z)-alkenes in 10–60 min under microwave irradiation. This domino reaction is proposed to proceed via tautomerization of 3-ulose to enol, acyl migration, tautomerization to the 3-O-acyl-2-ulose, and Wittig reaction. Alternatively, in chloroform, regioselective 3-olefination of 2-O-pivaloyl-3-uloses gave (E)-alkenes, key precursors for the miharamycins' ...

However, data on long-term results for HCC are limited, particularly regarding the use of the "Double Piggy-back" technique.Between 2001 and 2014, a total of 260 patients undergoing ...

This chapter starts by explaining the notion of indoor environmental quality. Afterwards a complete description of thermal comfort and indoor air quality is provided. The thermal comfort concept, the factors that most influence it and the criteria for thermal comfort assessment, including the adaptive models, are described in detail. Regarding the indoor air quality, the most important pollutants are presented, including their concentration limits currently in force in Portugal.

This work addresses the effect of using thermochromic paints in residential buildings. Two different thermochromic paint types were considered: One that changes properties through a step transition at a certain temperature, and another that changes properties in a gradual/linear manner throughout a temperature range. The studied building was a two-floor villa, virtually simulated through a digital model with and without thermal insulation, and considering thermochromic paints applied both on external ...

Background: Reaching the target cell has been the ultimate goal of nanoparticle-based drug delivery because many drugs do not have the adequate physicochemical properties to reach or be taken up by target cells. Therefore, site-specific drug delivery systems have been sought, aiming at overcoming many biological barriers, thus improving drug performance. Objective: Lipid nanoparticles emerged as a promising alternative for the usual colloidal drug carriers, prepared with non-toxic solid physiological ...

ABSTRACT This paper segments a sample of 918 Porto wine cellars visitors based on their wine product involvement. A segmentation methodology was applied to the wine product involvement of wine tourists. Three clusters were identified with high, medium and low wine product involvement levels. The relevant theoretical contribution of this study was to provide new evidence of segmentation based on product involvement studies in the wine tourism market field in an area were empirical studies still remain ...

Monkeypox, a neglected and re-emergent zoonotic disease caused by monkeypox virus (MPXV) infection, has been endemic in Central and Western Africa for decades. More recently, an outbreak has spread to a global level, occurring in sites with no previous reported cases and being clustered among men who have sex with men, suggesting new modes of transmission. There is an urgent need for research for a better understanding of the genomic evolution and changing epidemiology of the Orthopoxvirus group. ...

Dichromacy impairs color vision and impoverishes the discrimination of surface colors in natural scenes. Computational estimates based on hyperspectral imaging data from natural scenes suggest that dichromats can discriminate only about 10% of the colors discriminated by normal trichromats. These estimates, however, assume that the colors are equally frequent. Yet, pairs of colors confused by dichromats may be rare and thus have small impact on overall perceived chromatic diversity. This study estimated, ...

In the dynamic LCNM condition, a 10 Hz square luminance signal was added to each circle. The phase of this signal ...

Reactivation of telomerase has been implicated in human tumorigenesis, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In thyroid cancers, the presence of TERT promoter mutations (when occurring together with BRAF mutations) is significantly associated with higher TERT mRNA expression, and ...
