The present work used Plackett–Burman experimental design to assess the influence of enzymes of nematophagous fungi versus Strongyloides westeri and trichostrongylides larvae and Platynosomum fastosum eggs. The variables studied in the Plackett–Burman design were the proteases and chitinases of AC001 or VC4 as destructive agents of S. westeri and trichostrongylides larvae, and P. fastosum eggs. All tested enzymes had a significant effect (P < 0.05) on the destruction of S. westeri larvae. Furthermore, ...

OBJECTIVE The role of tractography in Gamma Knife thalamotomy (GK-T) planning is still unclear. Pyramidal tractography might reduce the risk of radiation injury to the pyramidal tract and reduce motor complications. METHODS In this study, the ventralis intermedius nucleus (VIM) targets of 20 patients were bilaterally defined using Iplannet Stereotaxy Software, according to the anterior commissure–posterior commissure ( AC-PC) line and considering the localization of the pyramidal tract. The 40 targets ...

Transthyretin (TTR) amyloidosis is a conformational disturbance, which, like other amyloidoses, represents a life threat. Here, we report a TTR variant, TTR Thr119Met, that has been shown to have a protective role in the development of clinical symptoms in carriers of TTR Val30Met, one of the most frequent variants among TTR amyloidosis patients. In order to understand this effect, we have determined the structures of the TTR Val30Met/Thr119Met double mutant isolated from the serum of one patient ...

Triatoma dimidiata, a Chagas disease vector widely distributed along Central America, has great capability for domestic adaptation as the majority of specimens caught inside human dwellings or in peridomestic areas fed human blood. Exploring the salivary compounds that overcome host haemostatic and immune responses is of great scientific interest. Here, we provide a deeper insight into its salivary gland molecules. We used high-throughput RNA sequencing to examine in depth the T. dimidiata salivary ...

The Val122Ile mutant transthyretin (TTR Ile122) is an amyloidogenic protein which has been described as the major protein component of amyloid fibrils isolated from patients with familial amyloidotic cardiomyopathy (FAC), a disease characterized by cardiac failure and amyloid deposits in the heart. The reasons for the deposition of TTR are still unknown and it is conceivable that a conformational alteration, resulting from the mutation, is fundamental for amyloid formation. The three-dimensional structure ...

Plasmodium falciparum causes the most serious complications of malaria and is a public health problem worldwide with over 2 million deaths each year. The erythrocyte invasion mechanisms by Plasmodium sp. have been well described, however the physiological aspects involving host components in this process are still poorly understood. Here, we provide evidence for the role of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) components in reducing erythrocyte invasion by P. falciparum. Angiotensin II (Ang II) reduced ...

Toxoplasmosis and neosporosis are diseases with worldwide distribution and are associated with reproductive problems in livestock and are responsible for economic losses. This review presents an overview of the current knowledge relative to these diseases in water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). In general, buffaloes are considered resistant to clinical toxoplasmosis, since there are studies only reporting serological evidence of natural infection in these animals. Studies have described age, poor hygienic ...

The present study sought to advance this line of research by examining the mediating role of perceptions of punishment in the relationship between corruption and BJW across countries with different corruption levels (i.e., Brazil, United States, and The Netherlands). Six hundred and fifty-four participants completed measures of global BJW, personal BJW, perceived ...

Brazil has a monitoring system to track annual forest conversion in the Amazon and most recently to monitor the Cerrado biome. However, there is still a gap of annual land use and land cover (LULC) information in all Brazilian biomes in the country. Existing countrywide efforts to map land use and land cover lack regularly updates and high spatial resolution time-series data to better understand historical land use and land cover dynamics, and the subsequent impacts in the country biomes. In this ...

The study of brain connectivity has been a cornerstone in understanding the complexities of neurological and psychiatric disorders. It has provided invaluable insights into the functional architecture of the brain and how it is perturbed in disorders. However, a persistent challenge has been achieving the proper spatial resolution, and developing computational algorithms to address biological questions at the multi-cellular level, a scale often referred to as the mesoscale. Historically, neuroimaging ...

Using a sequence of VAR-based nested multivariate models, we discuss the different layers of restrictions that are imposed on the VAR in levels by present-value models (PVM hereafter) for series that are subject to present-value restrictions. Our focus is novel: we are interested in the short-run restrictions entailed by PVMs (Vahid and Engle, 1993, Vahid and Engle, 1997) and their implications for forecasting. Using a well-known database, maintained by Robert Shiller, we implement a forecasting competition ...

Obesity is a major concern for global health care systems. Systemic low-grade inflammation in obesity is a major risk factor for insulin resistance. Leptin is an adipokine secreted by the adipose tissue that functions by controlling food intake, leading to satiety. Leptin levels are increased in obesity. This paper reports the temperature-dependent study of β-Ag2MoO4 micro-crystals using Raman spectroscopy. The micro-crystals were prepared by the hydrothermal method, and lattice dynamic calculations based on the density-functional theory (DFT) were used to assign the Raman modes observed in the spectrum and to support the understanding of the mechanism driving the vibrational changes undergone by β-Ag2MoO4. The effect of the temperature on the vibrational properties of the β-Ag2MoO4 has been investigated ...

One of the commonest pesticides used in Brazil is the fungicide carbendazim. Carbendazim can cause deleterious effects of the physiology and behaviour of acutely and chronically exposed animals and humans. However, few studies evaluated the effects of carbendazim on fish behaviour. Thus, the main objective of the present study was to evaluate behavioural changes in adult zebrafish exposed to carbendazim. We studied 177 adult zebrafishes ( Danio rerio ), divided into control groups (not exposed to carbendazim) ...
