Kidney renal failure means that one's kidney have unexpectedly stopped functioning, i.e., once chronic disease is exposed, the presence or degree of kidney dysfunction and its progression must be assessed, and the underlying syndrome has to be diagnosed. Although the patient's history and physical examination may denote good practice, some key information has to be obtained from valuation of the glomerular filtration rate, and the analysis of serum biomarkers. Indeed, chronic kidney sickness depicts ...

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most aggressive subtype of kidney cancer and up to 40% of patients submitted to surgery with a curative intent will relapse. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the applicability of an Extracellular vesicle (EV) derived miRNA profile as potential prognosis biomarkers in ccRCC patients. We analyzed a nine-miRNA profile in plasma EVs from 32 ccRCC patients with localized disease (before and after surgery) and in 37 patients with metastatic disease. ...

Magnetic shielding inductive fault current limiters with high temperature superconducting cylinders have previously been described by a characteristic (or maximum) hysteresis loop, built from properties of their constitutive parts, which allowed predicting their behavior in electrical grids. These preliminary results were based on finite element simulations, but posterior experiments suggested limitations in the models. In order to investigate the application of these previous models to real devices, ...

Thrombophilia stands for a genetic or an acquired tendency to hypercoagulable states that increase the risk of venous and arterial thromboses. Indeed, venous thromboembolism is often a chronic illness, mainly in deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, requiring lifelong prevention strategies. Therefore, it is crucial to identify the cause of the disease, the most appropriate treatment, the length of treatment or prevent a thrombotic recurrence. Thus, this work will focus on the development ...

Superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) have already demonstrated their viability in electric power grids. The growth in distributed generation sources and an increased interconnection of networks tend to increase the complexity of electric power grids, rising the number of failures, especially short circuits. To disseminate these technologies, the development of straightforward design tools is required. These tools must consider the properties of the available constitutive elements of the ...

This paper proposes a robust dual-quaternion based H∞ task-space kinematic controller for robot manipulators. To address the manipulator liability to modeling errors, uncertainties, exogenous disturbances, and their influence upon the kinematics of the end-effector pose, we adapt H∞ techniques – suitable only for additive noises – to unit dual quaternions. The noise to error attenuation within the H∞ framework has the additional advantage of casting aside requirements concerning noise distributions, ...

Ki-67 has shown promise as a prognostic factor in pulmonary carcinoids. In this study, we sought to validate the importance of Ki-67 and study the relationships between Ki-67 and other stromal biomarkers of vascular density. We examined Ki-67, CD34, and D2-40 in tumor tissues from 128 patients with surgically excised typical carcinoid of the lung. We used immunohistochemistry and morphometry to evaluate the amount of tumor staining for cellular proliferation (Ki-67), microvascular density (CD34-MVD), ...

Histopathology remains the cornerstone for diagnosing canine mammary tumors (CMTs). Recently, 2 classification systems (the World Health Organization [WHO] classification of 1999 and the proposal of 2011) and 2 grading methods based on the human Nottingham grade have been used by pathologists. Despite some evidence that the histological subtype and grade are prognostic factors, there is no comprehensive comparative study of these classification and grading systems in the same series of CMTs. In this ...

After the elimination of dental caries lesions, some microorganisms may remain viable in the tooth structure. Thus, cavity disinfection is an important procedure. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cavity disinfectants on the adhesion to dentin of permanent teeth. Sixty molars were ground flat and randomly assigned to six groups: control; chlorhexidine; Aloe vera; glutaraldehyde; EDTA; ethanol. Cavity disinfectants were applied, rinsed, and air-dried. The restorations were performed ...

From the electrical energy point of view, the smart community (SC) concept is meant to be as a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to the classical configuration. The SC includes small-scale renewable energy sources (RES) and small-scale energy storage system (ESS). The SC energy management system acts as an aggregator, aiming to assure benefits for community stakeholders. These trends led to the energy routers (ERs) concept. This study proposes and describes the control strategies ...

The AntiPhospholipid Syndrome (APS) is an acquired autoimmune disorder induced by high levels of antiphospholipid antibodies that cause arterial and veins thrombosis, as well as pregnancy-related complications and morbidity, as clinical manifestations. This autoimmune hypercoagulable state, usually known as Hughes syndrome, has severe consequences for the patients, being one of the main causes of thrombotic disorders and death. Therefore, it is required to be preventive; being aware of how probable ...

We propose a hybrid control strategy to design a switching control law with hysteresis in such a way that the global asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed and such that the global attractivity of the stabilization pose does not exhibit chattering, a problem that is present in all discontinuous-based feedback controllers. Using numerical simulations, we illustrate the problems ...

Electrodynamic forces developed under short-circuit events must be well characterized in power-grid applications, as they can compromise the integrity of network systems, particularly power transformers, but also inductive superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs). In this paper, the analysis of electrodynamic forces developed in an inductive SFCL of transformer type under such extreme conditions ...

Practical applications, however, require three-phase limiters, which, for the sake of compactness, may be built by three legged cores, instead of three single phase units. This has the advantage of using well established methods of power transformers industry, ...
