Abstract In economic applications it is often the case that the variate of interest is non-negative and its distribution has a mass-point at zero. Many regression strategies have been proposed to deal with data of this type but, although there has been a long debate in the literature on the appropriateness of different models, formal statistical tests to choose between the competing specifications are not often used in practice. We use the non-nested hypothesis testing framework of Davidson and ...

Theoretical predictions and experimental results demonstrate that mu-near zero metamaterials allow enhanced transmission (supercoupling) between two waveguides coupled by a channel with a disproportionately wide cross section. This effect is related but distinctly different from (and cannot be reduced to) a previously reported supercoupling effect using epsilon-near-zero metamaterials.

It is known that the zero-order two-phase-level gratings with a period much smaller and a thickness much larger than the wavelength may have antireflection properties the same as appropriate dielectric layers under normal incidence. On the basis of the rigorous coupled-wave analysis method formulation, it is shown that multilevel unidimensional phase gratings, for both TE and TM polarization, are functionally equivalent to antireflection structures of multilevel dielectric layers, even if the period ...

Some recent empirical evidence questions the typically large size of government spending multipliers when the nominal interest rate is stuck at zero, finding output multipliers of around 1 or even lower, with an upper bound of around 1.5 in some circumstances. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of nanomodifications in the asphalt mixture performance. Three types of nanoparticles were used: silica, zero-valent iron and bentonite. The correspondent mixtures were tested for stiffness, fatigue, permanent deformation and water sensitivity. The results showed that nanomodifications lead to improvements in the performance. (1) nanosilica improved stiffness and permanent deformation; (2) zero-valent iron presented better water sensitivity; (3) ...

The main objective of this paper is to use a recurrent neural network (RNN) to determine the trunk motion for a biped-walking machine, based on the zero-moment point (ZMP) criterion. ZMP criterion can be used to plan a stable gait for a biped-walking machine that has a trunk (inverted pendulum). So, a RNN is trained to determine a compensative trunk motion that makes the actual ZMP get closer to the planned ZMP. In this context, an identification scheme is presented to obtain the vector of parameters ...

This paper presents a new methodology for detection and area location of high impedance faults (HIF) on unbalanced distribution systems. The method is called Quasi-Differential Zero Sequence Protection (PQDSZ) and it detects these faults by analyzing the current zero sequence rms value on a distribution feeder. The detection relies on a differential area, defined by two points of measurement. The data is sent to a control center, which analyzes the relation between the received currents and send an ...

We address the question of how sensitive is the power of fiscal policy in the ZLB to the assumption of rational expectations. We do so through the lens of a standard NK model in which people are level-k thinkers. Our analysis weakens the case for using government spending to stabilize the economy when the ZLB binds. The less sophis- ticated people are, the smaller is the size of the government-spending multiplier. Our analysis strengthens the case for using tax policy to stabilize output when the ...

There is an ongoing, global discussion on the ways to obtain Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs). Nonetheless, little attention was given on the application of NZEBs in warm climates, especially in Brazil. Therefore, the aim of this article is to propose retrofit guidelines that meet a net zero energy target for four-story office buildings in the climactic conditions within Brasilia. Through this research 240 office buildings in the downtown area of the Brazilian capital were morphologically characterized, ...

This paper estimates for the first time the Joule losses in the YBCO superconductors in the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) Maglev vehicle. Imposing a pendulum-like movement to the vehicle and since the aerodynamic losses were taken into account in the experiments, obtained results show that the Joule losses occurred in the superconductors during the vehicle's movement. Four movement tests were completed, which allow measuring the average losses in superconductors that were responsible by vehicle's damping. ...

We study liftings or deformations of D-modules (D is the ring of differential operators from EGA IV) from positive characteristic to characteristic zero using ideas of Matzat and Berthelot’s theory of arithmetic D-modules. We pay special attention to the growth of the differential Galois group of the liftings. We also apply formal deformation theory (following Schlessinger and Mazur) to analyze the space of all liftings of a given D-module in positive characteristic. At the end we compare the problems ...

An essential line of worldwide research towards a sustainable energy future is the materials and processes for carbon dioxide capture and storage. Energy from fossil fuels combustion always generates carbon dioxide, leading to a considerable environmental concern with the values of CO2 produced in the world. The increase in emissions leads to a significant challenge in reducing the quantity of this gas in the atmosphere. Many research areas are involved solving this problem, such as process engineering, ...
