A pulsed Er:YAG laser with resonant in-band diode pumping was demonstrated. Laser pulses with 6.6 mJ energy and 50 ns pulse duration were generated. With an intra-cavity etalon a broad wavelength tuning range from 1643.47 to 1646.78 nm was obtained. A stable dual-wavelength operation was observed by fine tuning of the etalons. The separation of the two wavelengths was 0.78 nm. One of them was located within a methane absorption line and the other was off the line. The frequency stability of the ...

Chronic infections of the fallopian tubes with Chlamydia trachomatis (Ctr) cause scarring and can lead to infertility. Here we use human fallopian tube organoids and genital Ctr serovars D, K and E for long-term in vitro analysis. The epithelial monolayer responds with active expulsion of the bacteria into the lumen and with compensatory cellular proliferation-demonstrating a role of epithelial homeostasis in the defense against this pathogen. In addition, Ctr infection activates LIF signaling, which ...

Abstract We describe iron‐catalyzed intermolecular oxidative coupling reactions of diarylamines to form substituted 2,2′‐bis(arylamino)biaryl compounds, tetraarylhydrazines, and 5,6‐dihydrobenzo[ c ]cinnolines with the same hexadecafluorinated iron–phthalocyanine catalyst. The mild formation of C−C or N−N bonds was controlled by the use of acidic or basic additives. In contrast to most iron‐catalyzed dehydrogenative coupling reactions, ambient air could be used as the sole oxidant. Moreover, iron( ...

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of 2 established magnetic resonance imaging based techniques to quantify intrahepatic lipids (IHL) within a study population of extremely obese patients by means of a short, wide-bore MR scanner. Fat-selective imaging using a spectral-spatial excitation technique and in-phase/opposed-phase (IN/OP) gradient echo imaging were applied and results were compared. Results for IN/OP technique were corrected for T1- and T2*- relaxation effects. ...

We describe an iron-catalyzed asymmetric oxidative C-C coupling of diarylamines which proceeds at room temperature with air as final oxidant. Using hexadecafluorophthalocyanine-iron(II) as catalyst in the presence of catalytic amounts of an axially chiral biaryl phosphoric acid, the resulting chiral 2,2'-diamino-1,1'-biaryls are obtained in up to 90 % ee as confirmed by chiral HPLC. A detailed mechanism has been proposed with a radical cation-chiral phosphate ion pair as key intermediate leading to ...

We report on the development of compact and frequency-stable Er:YAG laser systems emitting in the eye-safe spectral region. Resonant cw diode pumping provides 4.5 W output power in cw operation and 2.2 mJ in Q-switched operation with pulse duration of about 140 ns. The application of intra-cavity etalons allows for wavelength tuning from 1645.22 to 1646.33 nm while the frequency stability accounts for less than 50 MHz. The potential of the erbium laser sources in terms of methane detection was evaluated ...

Abstract Active remote sensing represents a promising technology to accurately measure the atmospheric concentration of the climate‐relevant trace gases carbon dioxide and methane. For this application, frequency stabilized laser sources with high pulse energy emitting at specific absorption lines around 1.6 μm wavelength are required. While Raman frequency conversion of high power solid‐state laser systems provides sources suitable for CO 2 detection, compact resonantly pumped Er:YAG lasers are ...

The active human immuondeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) protease has a homodimeric structure, the subunits are connected by an ‘interface’ β-sheet formed by the NH2- and COOH-terminal amino acid segments. Short peptides derived from these segments are able to inhibit the protease activity in the range of micromolar IC50 values. We have further improved the inhibitory power of such peptides by computer modelling. The best inhibitor, the palmitoyl-blocked peptide Pam-Thr-Val-Ser-Tyr-Glu-Leu, has an IC50 ...

CD137 (ILA/4-1BB), a member of the TNF receptor family, was shown previously to inhibit proliferation and to induce apoptosis in T lymphocytes. In this study, we identify CD137 as a novel and potent monocyte activation factor. CD137 protein induces expression of IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-alpha, and inhibits expression of IL-10. Furthermore, CD137 differentially regulates expression of cell surface receptors. It induces expression of ICAM and reduces expression of FcgammaRIII, while levels of HLA-DR remain ...

Abstract We describe the synthesis of 1,1′‐ and 2,2′‐bicarbazoles by oxidative homocoupling of 2‐ and 1‐hydroxycarbazoles. The oxidative coupling using catalytic amounts of F 16 PcFe can be applied to both groups of substrates. Although F 16 PcFe generally provides the best yields for the synthesis of 1,1′‐bicarbazoles, di‐ tert ‐butyl peroxide affords better results for the 2,2′‐bicarbazoles. In our study, we have achieved the first syntheses of the biscarbalexines A–C, bisglybomine B, 2,2′‐dihydroxy‐ ...

Gastrointestinal adverse effects occur in 20-30% of patients with metformin-treated type 2 diabetes, leading to premature discontinuation in 5-10% of the cases. Gastrointestinal intolerance may reflect localized high concentrations of metformin in the gut. Abstract The adhesion behaviour of osteoblastic cells on implant surfaces is a main focus during the development of osteoconductive implant surfaces. Therefore, besides cell spreading and proliferation on surfaces the adhesion strength of cells to the substrate is of high interest. For this purpose, we have developed an adhesion device based on the spinning disc principle in conjunction with an inverse confocal ...

In angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with circularly polarized radiation, the photoemission intensities depend on photon helicity. This phenomenon arises for pure electric dipole transitions and nonchiral species provided the target exhibits a spatial orientation (or alignment) and the experimental geometry defines a "handedness". The new type of spectroscopy is illustrated by the examples of photoemission from graphite (0001) and Pd(111) surfaces. It is evident that the effect does not result ...

Chromosomal locus 6q23 is strongly linked to type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and related features including insulin secretion in various ethnic populations. Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) gene is an interesting T2DM candidate gene in this chromosome region. CTGF is a key mediator of progressive pancreatic fibrosis up-regulated in type 2 diabetes.
