Oestrogen receptor alpha (ERα) and beta (ERβ) are involved in the regulation of pathological myocardial hypertrophy (MH). We hypothesize that both ER are also involved in physiological MH. Therefore, we investigated the role of ER in exercise-induced physiological MH in loss-of-function models and studied potential mechanisms of action. We performed 1 and 8 weeks of voluntary cage wheel running (VCR) with male and female C57BL/6J wild-type (WT), ERα- and ERβ-deleted mice. In line with other studies, ...

A new phenomenon has been observed in solid-state photoemission with circularly polarized light. Its outward appearance is similar to the circular dichroism in photoabsorption. For special observation geometries, large photoelectron intensity asymmetries arise upon reversal of the photon helicity. The effect is not based on spin-orbit interaction, as is demonstrated by the example of photoemission from graphite (Z = 6). Similar asymmetries are expected for all single-crystal solids thus opening up ...

Measurements of a new observable quantity in photoemission from oriented molecules are reported. Using circularly polarized radiation, the photoemission intensities for a special geometry were found to depend on photon helicity. The basic theoretical description of the effect is outlined, showing that it occurs for all spatially fixed molecules in the electric dipole approximation and does not depend on electron-spin effects. Experimental case studies for diatomics (CO, NO), benzene, and the “heavy” ...

In angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with circularly polarized radiation, the photoemission intensities depend on photon helicity. This phenomenon arises for pure electric dipole transitions and nonchiral species provided the target exhibits a spatial orientation (or alignment) and the experimental geometry defines a "handedness". The new type of spectroscopy is illustrated by the examples of photoemission from graphite (0001) and Pd(111) surfaces. It is evident that the effect does not result ...

Theoretical predictions of a new phenomenon arising in photoelectron emission from oriented molecules by circularly polarized light have been experimentally verified for CO. For a special geometry photoelectron-intensity differences occur upon reversal of photon helicity. The measured asymmetries (up to 80%) show good agreement with an ab initio calculation at photon energies between 20 and 40 eV. Theoretically, the new manifestation of circular dichroism is already obtained in the pure electric ...

Network function virtualization (NFV) and software defined networking (SDN) are key technology enablers for cost reductions and new business models in networking. The possibility to automatically and dynamically scale network services at run time is one of the main claims of NFV. Elastic NFV could be similar to what elastic cloud services provide for compute, with pay-per-use cost models for customers. However, control of resources for elastic services is far from trivial. We show how current NFV ...

Optical systems and technologies have been radically changing the telecommunication networks for past 15 years; today wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology, optical amplifiers, and simple optical switching elements like optical add-drop multiplexers (OADMs) are used in the backbone networks of all operators worldwide. Optical systems nowadays provide the basis for cost-effective transmission of large amounts of bandwidth over the Internet, and will enable its future growth and the spreading ...

Some technical solutions for coherent bidirectional subscriber lines, a ten-channel distribution system, and a switching setup with computer-controlled receiver tuning are presented. The laboratory experiments, including carrier-frequency stabilization, multiplexing, and demultiplexing, as well as the fiber components used, are described. ...

Between 1973 and 1976 thirty-one patients with the symptoms of a blow-out fracture underwent sinuscopy. In all these cases a precise diagnosis was not possible from the clinical and x-ray findings alone without exploratory surgery. In 28 cases an exact diagnosis could be made using sinuscopy; 21 patients with blow-out fractures underwent reconstructive surgery to the orbital floor. In the remaining 7 cases fracture of the orbital floor was ruled out and the patients were spared more extensive diagnostic ...

A new phenomenon in photoemission from adsorbates is reported. With circularly polarized synchrotron radiation and a special observation geometry (defining a ‘handedness’ of the directions of photon impact, electron ejection and surface normal) photoemission intensity asymmetries arise upon reversal of photon helicity. The sensitivity and utility of circular dichroism in the angular distribution of photoelectrons (CDAD) as a probe of molecular orientation is demonstrated for adsorbed CO and NO molecules. A comparison between measured CDAD spectra and calculated values for spatially oriented CO and NiCO clearly confirms the well-known perpendicular adsorption for CO on Ni(100), whereas for CO adsorbed on Fe(100) a tilted adsorption geometry was found. For NO/Ni(100) and for NO on the oxygen-preadsorbed Ni(100) surface, ...

Abstract The tetrathiaoxalate complex Cp 4 Ti 2 C 2 S 4 ( 1 ) reacts with an equimolar amount of COCl 2 to give the blue‐green mononuclear complex Cp 2 TiC 2 S 4 CO ( 4 ). This reaction is analogous to the known reactions of 1 with SCl 2 or S 2 Cl 2 . However, when 1 was treated with equimolar amounts of the bifunctional sulfenyl chlorides 1,2‐C 2 H 4 (SCl) 2 ( 5 ), 1,3‐C 3 H 6 (SCl) 2 ( 6 ) or 1,2‐C 6 H 4 (SCl) 2 ( 7 ), the bi‐ or monocyclic tetrakisdisulfanes C 6 H 8 S 8 ( 9b ), C 8 H 12 S 8 ( 10 ), and C 14 H 8 S 8 ( 11 ), respectively, ...
