We report the analysis and annotation of 146,075 expressed sequence tags from Vitis species. The majority of these sequences were derived from different cultivars of Vitis vinifera, comprising an estimated 25,746 unique contig and singleton sequences that survey transcription in various tissues and developmental stages and during biotic and abiotic stress. Putatively homologous proteins were identified for over 17,752 of the transcripts, with 1,962 transcripts further subdivided into one or more ...

Toby Osborne, Joan‐Pau Rubiés,

The essays in this collection explore diplomacy as a form of cultural translation. Out of necessity, Europeans sought new ways of conducting diplomacy in the changing environment of the early modern world, as they grappled with challenges from within their old but crumbling respublica christiana , and also with changing relations with powers and communities beyond it. Reflecting the current vitality of research into early modern diplomacy and practice that has extended the boundaries of what we consider ...

Barbara A. Osborne, Joan K. Lunney, Larry R. Pennington, D H Sachs, Stuart Rudikoff,

Miniature swine MHC antigens from three inbred herds were examined by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. These antigens were found to constitute a series of complex glycoproteins displaying haplotype-specific patterns that allowed the distinction of both class I and class II molecules among the three haplotypes. Selected outbred pig antisera reacted with a subset of class I antigens, suggesting the presence of at least two distinct molecular species among these antigens. Similarly, alloantisera ...

Parathyroid carcinoma is a rare malignancy, and experience with its management is limited. It is generally accepted that surgery is the treatment of choice, and the initial operative intervention might represent the only chance for long-term success. At the time of surgery, a high index of suspicion for carcinoma is vital to performing the appropriate surgical procedures, because frozen-section diagnosis of parathyroid carcinoma is notoriously unreliable. In this article, we describe our experience ...

In order to evaluate the variability in surface water masses in the Western Pacific Warm Pool, we report high-precision radiocarbon measurements in annual and seasonal bands from Pontes lutea corals collected from the Palau Archipelago (7°N, 134°E). Annual coral bands from 1945 to 2008 and seasonal samples from 1953 to 1957 were analyzed to capture the initial early input of bomb 14 C from surface thermonuclear weapons testing in the Marshall Islands. Results show a pre-bomb average δ 14 C value ...

Patients with cancer continue to lack practical information regarding their illness and report low levels of awareness and use of patient services. The challenge to educators is to find cost-effective and timely ways to deliver a complex mix of interesting and high-quality information and expertise to this large and diverse audience, while still tailoring the content to individual needs and situations. In the present article, we describe the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) computer-based patient ...

Joan Osborne, Kathleen Blais, Janice S. Hayes,

This study investigates nurses' perceptions of medication errors and appropriate reporting. Results of the study suggest that nurses may not report because of fear of reprisal. Further, there may be a need to allow for nursing judgment in some instances; at those times, the term "medication error" may not be the most appropriate. Implications for nursing administration include further exploration of nonpunitive processes in response to adverse drug events.

Background Centers for Disease Control Guidelines recommend replacement of peripheral intravenous (IV) catheters every 72 to 96 hours. Routine replacement is thought to reduce the risk of phlebitis and bacteraemia. Catheter insertion is an unpleasant experience for patients and replacement may be unnecessary if the catheter remains functional and there are no signs of inflammation. Costs associated with routine replacement may be considerable. Objectives To assess the effects of removing peripheral ...

Joan Webster, Sonya Osborne,

Background Surgical site infections (SSIs) are wound infections that occur after invasive (surgical) procedures. Preoperative bathing or showering with an antiseptic skin wash product is a well‐accepted procedure for reducing skin bacteria (microflora). It is less clear whether reducing skin microflora leads to a lower incidence of surgical site infection. Objectives To review the evidence for preoperative bathing or showering with antiseptics for preventing hospital‐acquired (nosocomial) surgical site ...
