Type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an endocrine disease related to impaired/absent insulin signaling. Dietary habits can either promote or mitigate the onset and severity of T2DM. Diets rich in fruits and vegetables have been correlated with a decreased incidence of T2DM, apparently due to their high polyphenol content. Polyphenols are compounds of plant origin with several documented bioactivities related to health promotion. The present review describes the antidiabetic effects of polyphenols, ...

Coral-algal phase shifts in which coral cover declines to low levels and is replaced by algae have often been documented on coral reefs worldwide. This has motivated coral reef management responses that include restriction and regulation of fishing, e.g. herbivorous fish species. However, there is evidence that eutrophication and sedimentation can be at least as important as a reduction in herbivory in causing phase shifts. These threats arise from coastal development leading to increased nutrient ...

Shelf-margin reefs and reef sand aprons are important geomorphic and facies elements associated with many isolated platforms today and in the stratigraphic record. Although it is generally appreciated that shelf-margin reefs and reef sand aprons have formed at or near breaks in slope at the rims of platforms throughout geologic time, possible environmental causes for variation in their sizes are not well understood. To provide better constraints for assessing possible reasons for such variability ...

Abstract Isolated carbonate platforms and atolls occur throughout the geologic record, from Archean to present. Although the roles of sea-level change, tectonics, and sediment supply on large-scale changes in stratigraphical architecture of these systems are relatively well understood, the details of the nature and controls on sedimentological variability between and within individual geomorphic elements on platforms and atolls are less well constrained. The purposes of this study are (1) to describe, ...

Ten IKONOS images of different coral reef sites distributed around the world were processed to assess the potential of 4-m resolution multispectral data for coral reef habitat mapping. Complexity of reef environments, established by field observation, ranged from 3 to 15 classes of benthic habitats containing various combinations of sediments, carbonate pavement, seagrass, algae, and corals in different geomorphologic zones (forereef, lagoon, patch reef, reef flats). Processing included corrections ...

Abstract Macrophages are able to produce, export, and transfer fatty acids to lymphocytes in culture. The purpose of this study was to examine if labelled fatty acids could be transferred from macrophages to pancreatic islets in co‐culture. We found that after 3 h of co‐culture the transfer of fatty acids to pancreatic islets was: arachidonic ≫ oleic > linoleic = palmitic. Substantial amounts of the transferred fatty acids were found in the phospholipid fraction; 87.6% for arachidonic, 59.9% for oleic, ...

The Campeche Bank, Gulf of Mexico, is a region with abundant coral reef ecosystems that haven’t been studied despite providing goods and services to some human communities. This work presents the topography, coral community and conspicuous reef associated fauna of three reefs of this region: Sisal, Madagascar and Serpiente. Three-D models of reef topography were derived using a GPS-echo-sounder coupled with geostatistical methods. The coral community was assessed through composition, richness, density ...

Coral diseases acting synergistically with other environmental stressors are a growing problem for Caribbean reefs. Hard coral cover, coral traits, and coral diseases were examined from 1999 to 2021 for Akumal reef, located in the Northern Mexican Caribbean. The 45 recorded coral species were classified into life-history strategies: competitive, stress-tolerant, and weedy, associated with different framework-building capacities. Results indicate that cumulative impacts of coral diseases outbreaks ...

An effective management tool for the spatial prioritization of the Cozumel Reefs National Park (CRNP), using a systematic approach, is an urgent need for the conservation of one of the most important Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Mexico. In this study, we integrated a model using seascape metrics, the spatio-temporal variation of substrate coverage, and frequency of reef use for SCUBA diving, to systematically identify priority areas for conservation within the CRNP. We identified seven habitat ...

Interactions between multiple stressors (climate change, pollution, and overfishing) can erode ecological thresholds and trigger a phase shift from a coral-dominated reef state to less desired benthic states. Akumal Reef located in the North of the Mexican Caribbean is an important case study to quantify the ecological changes of coral reefs affected by multiple stressors. Here we used both field data (benthic cover, coral condition, fish biomass), together with satellite data of the main stressors ( ...

Introduction: currently, the elderly population is increasing and with it, the presence of diseases. Phenolic compounds are substances that have antioxidant properties which can impact on the prevention of oxidative damage, closely related to the onset of various diseases. Most phenolic compounds are bioaccessible and bioavailable through mechanical, enzymatic and chemical routes. However, during aging these factors are modified, affecting the absorption of these compounds. Objective: to know the ...

Tourism is the primary economic activity on the Riviera Maya in Quintana Roo, Mexico. The area's main attractions are the fringing coral reefs along the coast and the myriad white sand beaches produced by them. Rapid growth of tourism and supporting industries generates jobs and a steady flow of immigrants, increasing demand for housing and services. It also increases pressure on coastal and marine resources through impacts such as pollution, overfishing, coastal zone modification, etc. In this ...

Abstract On Campeche Bank (CB) in the southern Gulf of Mexico, Gags Mycteroperca microlepis are captured as part of a sequential multispecies fishery. Limited scientific data suggest that the Gag is the third most important commercial species in the region, contributing 21% (total weight) of the overall grouper catch. Neither age nor stock data are currently available for Gags in this region, making it impossible to determine how this species is affected by current fishing practices. Such information ...
