Abstract Viscous flow that often occurs in adhesive materials leads to a permanent deformation when adhesives are subjected to creep loading. Creep loading has a significant influence on the strength of bonded structures. Due to the viscous behavior, the fracture energy also may change with time for joints that experience creep loading in service. In this work the effects of two creep parameters (creep load and time) on the residual mode II fracture energy of an adhesive was investigated using end ...

Ranulfo Martins Carneiro Neto, A. Akhavan‐Safar, Eduardo Martins Sampaio, Joaquim Teixeira de Assis, Lucas F. M. da Silva,

The behavior of polymeric adhesives is time and temperature dependent, as they are considered viscoelastic materials. These materials can undergo creep deformation even at low stress levels and room temperature. This way, a viscous flow can occur at the adhesive layer and it can lead to viscous deformation, causing a modification in the adhesive properties. The current work aims to investigate the shear creep fracture energy of an epoxy adhesive using end notched flexure (ENF) samples creep tested ...

The analysis of ceramic materials has been proven to be an indispensable tool for indirectly approaching past people and societies through their cultural remnants, allowing inferences about their technology, and their interaction with their surrounding physical and social environments. Pottery products acquire their characteristic properties during the manufacture process. Compositional (mineralogical and chemical) and microstructural analyses have become an integral part of interdisciplinary archaeological ...

The aim of this work is to evaluate the welding residual stress profile in ASTM A106 Gr. B steel pipes with 4" diameter and to correlate this profile with the microstructure and hardness of the joint. The results showed that the residual stresses are more uniform for a lower welding heat input. Higher welding heat input causes not only a non-uniformity of the stress profile but also promotes the maximum stress as high as the yield strength. The microstructure was composed of ferrite, perlite and ...

This in vivo study aimed to evaluate the influence of contact points on the approximal caries detection in primary molars, by comparing the performance of the DIAGNOdent pen and visual-tactile examination after tooth separation to bitewing radiography (BW). A total of 112 children were examined and 33 children were selected. In three periods (a, b, and c), 209 approximal surfaces were examined: (a) examiner 1 performed visual-tactile examination using the Nyvad criteria (EX1); examiner 2 used DIAGNOdent ...

Many objects of common use (tools, utensils, metals, knick‐knacks, dishes and glasses) and artifacts (for example paintings of all types) are composed of two or more layers. In many cases, it would be useful to determine the correct location, composition and thickness of the various layers. Non‐destructive and non‐invasive methods are described, based on energy‐dispersive X‐ray fluorescence which are able to ‘reconstruct' the complete structure of a multilayered sample. These methods use, in different ...

ABSTRACT The aim of the this study was to quantitatively evaluate in three‐dimensional (3D), the porosity degree of three improved silicate‐based endodontic repair cements (iRoot BP Plus ® , Biodentine ® , and Ceramicrete) compared to a gold‐standard calcium silicate bioactive cement (Pro Root ® MTA). From each tested cement, four samples were prepared by a single operator following the manufacturer's instructions in terms of proportion, time, and mixing method, using cylindrical plastic split‐ring moulds. In this paper a general method based on energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) analysis has been tested to assess its possible use as a tool to reconstruct the structure and determine the thickness of two and/or multi-layered materials. The method utilizes the X-ray intensity ratios of Kα/Kβ or Lα/Lβ peaks (or the ratio of these peaks) for selected elements present in multi-layered objects of various materials (Au alloys, gilded Cu, gilded Ag, gilded Pb, Ag–Au Tumbaga, stone surfaces with protective ...

Proton computerized tomography deals with relatively thick targets like the human head or trunk. In this case precise analytical calculation of the proton final energy is a rather complicated task, thus the Monte Carlo simulation stands out as a solution. We used the GEANT4.8.2 code to calculate the proton final energy spectra after passing a thick Al absorber and compared it with the same conditions of the experimental data. The ICRU49, Ziegler85 and Ziegler2000 models from the low energy extension ...

Computed tomography is a nondestructive technique that allows the visualization of internal structures of a sample. However, the attenuation coefficient of a material to radiation, shown in grayscale levels, can be interpreted as the combination of parameters of density and atomic number. Thus, the separation of different structures of equal attenuation is no simple task, requiring prior knowledge of the sample composition, which is usually not available. By calibration of a high‐resolution microtomographic ...

Duplex stainless steel is an example of composite material with approximately equal amounts of austenite and ferrite phases. Difference of physical and mechanical properties of component is additional factor that contributes appearance of residual stresses after welding of duplex steel plates. Measurements of stress distributions in weld region were made by X-ray diffraction method both in ferrite and austenite phases. Duplex Steel plates were joined by GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) technology. ...

When the electromagnetic wave excites more than one electron, the coherent scatter from different electrons gives rise to interference effects. X-rays scattered from a crystalline solid can constructively interfere, producing a diffracted beam at well-defined Bragg angles. The aim of this work is to describe a new imaging method based on the detection of diffracted X-rays. Diffraction patterns of polycrystalline solids (lead, silver and copper) were measured.
