Joe S. Hunter, James C. Hung,

This paper covers the design description, operation, and preliminary evaluation of a multifunction sensing device that is capable of measuring two axes of angular rate and two axes of linear acceleration from a single instrument. The equations for obtaining three axes of angular rate and three axes of linear acceleration from a single instrument are also developed. Test data is presented that illustrates state-of-the-art performance on available multifunction sensors. Finally, methods of improving ...

Thérèse Hunter, Joe V. Bannister, Gary J. Hunter,

The structurally homologous mononuclear iron and manganese superoxide dismutases (FeSOD and MnSOD, respectively) contain a highly conserved glutamine residue in the active site which projects toward the active‐site metal centre and participates in an extensive hydrogen bonding network. The position of this residue is different for each SOD isoenzyme (Q69 in FeSOD and Q146 in MnSOD of Escherichia coli ). Although site‐directed mutant enzymes lacking this glutamine residue (FeSOD[Q69G] and MnSOD[Q146A]) ...

We have expressed, purified, and analyzed the iron-containing superoxide dismutase (FeSOD) of Escherichia coli with mutations directed at tyrosine position 34 to introduce phenylalanine (SODY34F), serine (SODY34S), or cysteine (SODY34C). FeSOD and mutant enzymes were purified from SOD-deficient cells using a GST-FeSOD fusion protein intermediate which was subsequently cleaved with thrombin and repurified. Specific activities were measured using the xanthine-xanthine oxidase method and gave 3148 u/mg ...

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide with 80% of cases arising in the developing world. The mortality associated with cervical cancer can be reduced if this disease is detected at the early stages of development or at the pre-malignant state (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, CIN). The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of Raman spectroscopy as a diagnostic tool to detect biochemical changes accompanying cervical cancer progression. Raman spectra were ...

During a spectroscopic study to identify biochemical changes in cervical tissue with the onset of carcinogenesis, residual paraffin wax contributions were observed on almost all dewaxed formalin-fixed paraffin-processed (FFPP) tissue sections examined. Subsequently, the present study was formulated to evaluate the efficacy of current dewaxing agents using Raman spectroscopy. Three cervical FFPP sections were subjected to each of the protocols. Sections were dewaxed using four common dewaxing protocols, ...

The use of vibrational spectroscopy in the detection of cancer is a newly emerging diagnostic field, which has shown great potential to date. Many investigations have been carried out on frozen tissue samples, which by their very nature are hard to obtain. However, histology departments have archives of thousands of tissue samples, preserved and mounted in wax blocks. If this archival material can be shown to yield good Raman and IR spectra capable of differentiating between normal and cancerous ...
