Endostatin (ES), the C-terminal fragment of collagen XVIII known for its anti-angiogenic properties, is associated with neurological diseases in mammals. In this study, we investigated the effect of ES on nerve growth factor (NGF)-induced neuronal differentiation, migration, neuritogenesis, and neurite extension. ES partially inhibited PC12 cell differentiation and cerebellar granule cell migration. In addition, neurite outgrowth was inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner. This effect was also ...

The uptake, metabolism and antitumor activity of 1-β-d-arabinofuranosylcytosine nucleotides encapsulated in liposomes were investigated in L1210 cells sensitive and resistant to the drug. These studies were carried out in order to determine whether encapsulation of the presumed active component of the drug, namely, arabinofuranosylcytosine 5′ triphosphate will convert resistant cells to sensitive. The results indicate that liposome entrapment of Ara-CMP and Ara-CTP did not result in increased delivery ...

A 26-year-old male presented with a five-week history of headache suggestive of raised intracranial pressure. He subsequently developed transient episodes of mild right-sided hemiparesis and numbness. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain revealed widespread inflammatory white matter lesions, an ischaemic focus in the left corona radiata, and widespread microhaemorrhages ...

Joel R. Campbell,

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has been one of the most successful organizations dedicated to regional integration. While not attempting the thick form of institutionalization seen in the European Union, it has established norms of peaceful resolution of conflicts, non-interference in domestic politics and protection of member states’ sovereignty. Scholarship has rarely examined exactly how the organization promotes members’ sovereignty, and that is Laura Southgate's task. Her ...

Joel R. Campbell,

One of the most discussed aspects of China's rise as a major power is the actual effect it may be having in east Asia and beyond. This volume, edited by Evelyn Goh, assesses the degree of Chinese influence on the developing countries of east, south-east and south Asia, through individual country case-studies and by examining issue areas. Goh suggests that there is considerable ‘slippage’ in China's ability to get foreign countries to do what it wants, because influence comes in multiple guises (p. ...
