The implementation of MARPOL Annex VI in the North and Baltic Sea Sulphur Emission Control Area (SECA) has raised economic concerns among shippers and shipowners, as well as spurred policymakers to appeal to various interests, such as citizen health, export industry competitiveness, and consumer prices. To justify their cases, policymakers and stakeholders have commissioned various agencies to monitor the implementation's effects upon sustainability, especially regarding a potential modal shift from ...

Models for the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS, rely on sexual partner mixing patterns in the population. From data acquired through partner notification for infection with Chlamydia trachomatis among young people in Gothenburg, Sweden, it was possible to construct contact matrices for the variables ‘rate of partner change’ and ‘social class’ of the partners in pair formations. These matrices show a restricted mixing between these two variables for young heterosexual women. ...

Screening programmes are important for the control of Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) infection, a disease spread mainly by asymptomatic carriers. Risk factors for Ct infection were assessed in 6810 consecutive asymptomatic young women seeking contraceptive advice. All women filled in a questionnaire and were offered Ct testing. Of the 5785 who consented to testing, 425 (7.3%) were Ct culture positive. Four variables were significantly related to increased risk of being infected: age 18–23 years, duration ...

Abstract Background Youth unemployment remains at a high stable level in many countries making it a public health problem of importance. The aim was to examine the short-term effect of unemployment at a young age (aged 17–29 years) on self-reported binge drinking and alcohol-related problems. Methods We used data from a cross-sectional national study that took place in 2013, with a follow-up in 2014. A sample of young adults aged 17–29 years (n = 1188, response rate of 46.3%) that completed both surveys ...

Two groups of women under the age of 26 with chlamydial infection (A-asymptomatic women from a screening program, B-traditional STD clinic patients) and their partners were compared with respect to history of STD, sexual behavior, contraception, and indices for income and social welfare expense. The mean number of partners was 1.3 in group A and 1.8 in group B. Women in group B, in spite of more frequent condom use, demonstrated greater risk behavior both with respect to STD and to unwanted pregnancy ...

To assess whether routinely collected data from partner notification for HIV infection could be used to study HIV epidemiology. The issues addressed were measures of contact patterns and behaviour change, variables influencing transmission risks, and indications of HIV incidence. We collected anonymous questionnaire data from all partner notifications performed from seropositive patients diagnosed in Sweden between 1 January 1989 and 30 June 1990.A structured questionnaire was completed by the physician ...

Macro-level models is the dominating type of freight transport analysis models for supporting the decision-making in public authorities. Recently, also agent-based models have been used for this purpose. These two model types have complementing characteristics: macro-level models enable to study large geographic regions in low level of detail, whereas agent-based models enable to study entities in high level of detail, but typically in smaller regions. In this paper, we suggest and discuss three ...

AIMS This study aimed at describing the effects of missing data when surveying alcohol consumption using a Random Digit Dialling procedure. Methods Data was part of the Monitor project including repeated monthly data on the alcohol habits in the general Swedish population. Non-respondents during four months were followed up a year later and asked to do a shortened telephone interview and were compared to a concurrent sample of respondents (n=2552 versus n=6005). Further, using a second approach, ...

Based on clinical and laboratory surveillance data, trends in the incidence rates of genital Chlamydia trachomatis infections in Sweden between 1991 and 1999 were analysed according to age group and sex. The influence of changes in laboratory methods on the reported infections was assessed. After a decrease in the incidence rate of infection of 36% between 1991 and 1994, followed by a period of stability, a 20% increase was observed between 1997 and 1999 (from 157 to 189/100,000). Between 1991 and ...

Since 1985, partner notification has been part of Swedish policy to prevent the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Potentially infected partners of a newly diagnosed seropositive patient are notified either by the index patient or by the physician and referred for counselling. The efficacy of this strategy was assessed over 18 months in 1989-90. 365 HIV-seropositive index patients (91% of the 403 patients diagnosed in Sweden during the study period) reported 564 sexual or needle- ...

In this paper we elaborate on the usage of multi-agent-based simulation (MABS) for quantitative impact assessment of transport policy and infrastructure measures. We provide a general discussion on how to use MABS for freight transport analysis, focusing on issues related to input data management, validation and verification, calibration, output data analysis, and generalization of results. The discussion is built around an agent-based transport chain simulation tool called TAPAS (Transportation And ...

Data from a study of partner notification for venereal chlamydial infection are used to estimate the contact preference matrix, according to sexual contact activity levels of the male partners, of young heterosexual women. A method for correcting data for the bias introduced by studying infected women only is presented. Results indicate that an overall proportional mixing model is not an adequate description of the mixing pattern.

We present the Transportation And Production Agent-based Simulator (TAPAS), which is an agent-based model for simulation of transport chains that can be used, e.g., for analysis of transport-related policy and infrastructure measures. TAPAS is more powerful than traditional approaches to freight transport analysis, as it explicitly models production and customer demand, and it captures the interaction between individual transport chain actors, their heterogeneity and decision making processes, as ...

Bacterial cells display a diverse array of surface organelles that are important for a range of processes such as intercellular communication, motility and adhesion leading to biofilm formation, infections, and bacterial spread. More specifically, attachment to host cells by Gram-negative bacteria are mediated by adhesion pili, which are nanometers wide and micrometers long fibrous organelles. Since these pili are significantly thinner than the wavelength of visible light, they cannot be detected ...

We contribute an extension of the agent-based freight transport analysis model TAPAS-Z, whose aim is to simulate decision- making and other activities in transport chains. TAPAS-Z is a further development of the TAPAS model, and it enables stochastic variation, based on statistical distributions, of the locations of senders and receivers of freight, hence providing improved support for simulation of transport between larger regions. The model extension presented in this paper enables stochastic ...
