Alan Robinson, John N. Loeb,

THE determination of plasma osmolality has found increasing clinical use over the past 10 years and is now a readily available procedure in many routine clinical laboratories. Although under ordinary circumstances plasma osmolality is primarily determined by the concentration of inorganic ions, other substances contribute to it and, in certain pathologic states, may cause appreciable elevation of the plasma osmolality over that contributed by inorganic ions alone. Thus, diabetes mellitus and uremia ...

The Arabian Shield preserves a protracted magmatic record of repeated amalgamation of juvenile subduction terranes that host granite intrusions ranging in age from the early Neoproterozoic to the Cambrian, which were emplaced into convergent and within-plate settings. Geochronology and whole-rock geochemistry of sampled Saudi Arabian granitoids define and distinguish four discrete age groups: 1) ~ 845–700 Ma island arc and synorogenic granitoids (IA + Syn), 2) ~ 640–610 Ma granitoids from the Nabitah and ...

Arabian Shield granitic zircon geochemistry provides insight into the petrogenetic processes involved in generating one of the planet's largest tracts of juvenile Neoproterozoic crust. New zircon geochemistry supports previous U-Pb and whole-rock data that defined four magmatic groups: (1) ∼870–675 Ma island arc and synorogenic I-type granitoids (IA+Syn), (2) ∼640–585 Ma I- and A-type granitoids from the Nabitah and Halaban Suture (NHSG), (3) ∼610–600 Ma postorogenic perthitic (hypersolvus) A-type granitoids ( ...

The Arabian Shield preserves a protracted magmatic record of amalgamated juvenile terranes that host a diverse range of early Neoproterozoic to Cambrian granitoids intruding volcanosedimentary basin assemblages that have corollaries in other parts of the East African Orogen. New zircon U–Pb geochronology of 19 granitoids intruding eight Arabian Shield terranes, define four discrete magmatic events: island arc (∼845 Ma), syncollisional (∼710 Ma), post-tectonic (∼620 Ma) and anorogenic (∼525 Ma). Chris Robinson, John Rumsey, Alan White,

Abstract The existence of two classes of equity differing principally in their voting rights allows tests of hypotheses of corporate governance and security valuation. A legal case involving the voting and non‐voting shares of Canadian Tire affected the relative prices of dual class equity for other firms listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Some price changes are consistent with the theory advanced by Levy (1983) that price differences are related to expected takeover premiums. Other observations ...

Anna L. Duncan, Alan J. Robinson, John E. Walker,

The anionic lipid cardiolipin is an essential component of active ATP synthases. In metazoans, their rotors contain a ring of eight c-subunits consisting of inner and outer circles of N- and C-terminal α-helices, respectively. The beginning of the C-terminal α-helix contains a strictly conserved and fully trimethylated lysine residue in the lipid head-group region of the membrane. Larger rings of known structure, from c9-c15 in eubacteria and chloroplasts, conserve either a lysine or an arginine ...

Recent evidence suggests that extension of pseudopods during phagocytosis requires localized insertion of endomembrane vesicles. The nature of these vesicles and the processes mediating their release and insertion are unknown. COPI plays an essential role in the budding and traffic of membrane vesicles in intracellular compartments. We therefore assessed whether COPI is also involved in phagosome formation. We used ldlF cells, a mutant line derived from Chinese hamster ovary cells that express a ...

ABSTRACT Background: Consensus recommends early recognition of memory problems through multi-disciplinary assessment in memory clinics; however, little is known about the experiences of people accessing such services. The aim of this review was to synthesis empirical evidence on patient and carer experiences in the transition to dementia. Methods: This review updates an earlier review (Bamford et al ., 2004) on the topic of disclosure of the diagnosis of dementia. Key electronic databases were searched ...

Abstract: International conservation planning at the end of the twentieth century is dominated by coarse‐filter, supra‐organismal approaches to conservation that may be insufficient to conserve certain species such as the jaguar ( Panthera onca ). If we are to retain broadly distributed species into the next century, we need to plan explicitly for their survival across their entire geographic range and through political boundaries while recognizing the variety of ecological roles the species plays in ...

Forty female patients with pituitary adenomas were studied retrospectively to determine whether factors could be identified that would help predict outcome from operation. Twenty-five patients had a normal prolactin level (less than or equal to 30 ng/ml) during the early postoperative period (less than or equal to 3 months) and 15 patients had persistent disease (prolactin greater than 30 ng/ml). Nine of the 25 patients who initially had normal prolactin levels during the early postoperative period ...

A system has been developed to perform neutron radiographic analysis of dynamic events having a duration of several milliseconds. The system has been operated in the range of 2000 to 10 000 frame/s. Synchronization has provided high-speed motion neutron radiographs for evaluation of the firing cycles of 7.62-mm munition rounds within a thick steel rifle barrel. The system has also been used to demonstrate its ability to produce neutron radiographic movies of two-phase flow. The equipment includes ...

Measurements of motor vehicle emissions at Tuscarora Tunnel in Pennsylvania and Fort McHenry Tunnel in Maryland were compared with predictions of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) mobile-source emission models MOBILE4.1 and MOBILE5. Both models usually agreed to within ± 50% with the observed emission rates, with MOBILES consistently predicting higher emission factors than MOBILE4.1. At Tuscarora, which is level, both models tended to overpredict. At Fort McHenry, which has grades, MOBILE4. ...

The spike protein of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is critical for virus infection through the engagement of the human ACE2 protein1 and is a major antibody target. Here we show that chronic infection with SARS-CoV-2 leads to viral evolution and reduced sensitivity to neutralizing antibodies in an immunosuppressed individual treated with convalescent plasma, by generating whole-genome ultra-deep sequences for 23 time points that span 101 days and using in vitro techniques ...
