Sean Blenkinsop, John Telford, Marcus Morse,

This article draws from the experience of outdoor and experiential educators working in the context of a radical, long-term formal public education research project. One of the accidental findings from the research is that experienced outdoor educators may have particular pedagogical skills, likely honed by the contexts in which they work, that can be of use to mainstream educators trying to expand their pedagogical repertoire, teach outdoors or be more environmentally focused in their practices. ...

Abstract Deformation and focused fluid flow within a mineralized system are critical in the genesis of hydrothermal ore deposits. Dilation and integrated fluid flux due to coupled deformation and fluid flow in simple strike–slip fault geometries were examined using finite difference analysis in three dimensions. A series of generic fault bend and fault jog geometries consistent with those seen in the western Mount Isa Inlier were modelled in order to understand how fault geometry parameters influence ...

A total of 280 brachiopods of Ordovician to Cretaceous age, complemented by published data from belemnites and planktonic foraminifera, are used to reconstruct the evolution of calcium isotope composition of seawater (δ44/40CaSW) over the Phanerozoic. The compiled δ44/40CaSW record shows a general increase from ∼1.3‰ (NIST SRM 915a) at the beginning of the Ordovician to ∼2‰ at present. Superimposed on this trend is a major long-term positive excursion from the Early Carboniferous to Early Permian as ...

Integration of foraminiferal biostratigraphy, 87 Sr/ 86 Sr isotope stratigraphy, and traditional physical stratigraphy has provided a refined age control of a poorly known Oligocene-to-Pleistocene sedimentary sequence nonconformably covering the crystalline basement complex of the Calabrian microplate, a continental block which rifted off the southern margin of the European plate during Neogene time. Rb–Sr and U–Pb data from the Borden complex of northern Ontario, a carbonatite associated with the Kapuskasing Structural Zone, indicate a mid-Proterozoic age. A 207 Pb/ 206 Pb age of 1872 ± 13 Ma is interpreted as the emplacement age of this body, grouping it with other ca. 1900 Ma complexes that are the oldest known carbonatites associated with the Kapuskasing structure. A 206 Pb– 238 U age of 1894 ± 29 Ma agrees with the Pb–Pb age but has a high mean square of weighted deviates (MSWD) of 42. A Rb– ...

Lead isotopic compositions are presented for 8 calcite, 1 pyrite and 1 melilite separates from the Oka, Quebec, carbonatite complex. Pyrite, melilite and two calcite samples with small in situ decay corrections yield similar initial isotope ratios, averaging206Pb204Pb = 19.65, 207Pb204Pb = 15.56, 208Pb204Pb = 39.00. This composition shows a close affinity for Pb isotope ratios from ocean island basalts (OIB) and indicates an origin of the Pb in large-ion lithophile (LIL)-element depleted mantle sources. ...
