John Bonham,

^ r N BRITISH politics the middle class is a label or slogan thrown about in public discussion rather than a precisely defined unit. The followng , zexamples of propositions commonly uttered will be familiar: That this or that stands for the middle (or by contrast the working) class. That a should not act as a class party in the sense of favounng one or other class group. That the middle class deserves consideration in government policy, or at least that its interests ought not in justice to be disregarded. ...

Abstract: The total levels of butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) activity and, more specifically, the distribution of BChE molecular forms were measured in the human neocortex during fetal development. Both the amount of total activity and the abundance of the different molecular forms (G 1 and G 4 ) remained relatively constant between gestational ages of 8‐22 weeks and were similar to those observed in samples of cortex from aged brain. In addition, in both Alzheimer‐type and parkinsonian dementia, the ...

The distribution of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) molecular forms and their solubility characteristics were examined, using density gradient centrifugation, in various regions of the postmortem human CNS. Total AChE activity varied extensively (50-fold) among the regions investigated, being highest in the telencephalic subcortical structures (caudate nucleus and nucleus of Meynert); intermediate in the substantia nigra, cerebellum, and spinal cord; and least in the fornix ...

Progression through the somatic cell cycle requires the temporal regulation of cyclin gene expression and cyclin protein turnover. One of the best-characterized examples of this regulation is seen for the B-type cyclins. These cyclins and their catalytic component, cdc2, have been shown to mediate both the entry into and maintenance of mitosis. The cyclin B1 gene has been shown to be expressed between the late S and G2 phases of the cell cycle, while the protein is degraded specifically at interphase ...

A method of HPLC analysis of 3-deoxyanthocyanidins was developed which allowed the detection of these phytoalexins by plasma desorption mass spectrometry (PDMS). In addition, the times at which samples were taken were increased to 60h post-inoculation. As a result of the changes in protocol, a new deoxyanthocyanidin was detected. The compound was isolated and purified and found by PDMS to have a molecular weight of 285. In addition to the PDMS data, bathochromic shift analyses indicated that the ...

The molecular basis of cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS) deficiency has been studied in 536 patient alleles with 130 different mutations described. To date, no study has reported on the incidence of any of the reported mutations in patients from the UK and the US. We developed a new antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) PCR/hybridization method to screen for 12 of the most frequent CBS mutations in 14 unrelated patients from the UK and 38 unrelated patients from the US, a total of 104 independent alleles. ...

Organophosphate nerve agents (OPNAs) are highly toxic organophosphorus compounds (OPs) characterized according to their mechanism of action as substances influencing cholinergic nerve transmission via inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE; EC 3.1.1.7). The manifestation of intoxication comprises nicotinic, muscarinic, and central symptoms. Some OPs are capable of causing a delayed neurotoxicity. Cholinesterases (AChE and butyrylcholinesterase, EC 3.1.1.8., BChE) could be characterized as the main ...

Methods for the covalent coupling of microorganisms to a solid support were investigated. Both bacteria and yeast were attached to cellulose particles using cyanuric chloride as the coupling agent, although different experimental procedures were needed for the two types of microbes. This general technique for whole-cell immobilization offers an advantage over entrapment methods in that the cells are attached to the outer surface of the solid, thus eliminating the resistance of a gel to the transfer ...

Abstract Background It is unknown whether measurement of markers of oxidative stress can improve the prediction of severity of acute pancreatitis. Methods Consecutive patients admitted with a diagnosis of acute pancreatitis were divided into mild (n = 62) and severe (n = 23) groups based on the Atlanta classification. Plasma oxidative stress markers were measured within 24 h of admission and included ascorbic acid (endogenous antioxidant), protein carbonyl (a marker of protein oxidation), thiobarbituric ...

Abstract There is a need for successful models of how to recruit, train, and retain bench scientists at the earliest stages of their careers into translational research. One recent, promising model is the University of California Davis Howard Hughes Medical Institute Integrating Medicine into Basic Science (HHMI‐IMBS) program, part of the HHMI Med into Grad initiative. Abstract Peptide nucleic acids (PNA) are oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) analogs in which the sugar phosphate backbone of the ODN has been replaced by one derived from units of N‐ethylaminoglycine. PNAs recognize DNA and RNA in a sequence specific manner and form complexes that can be characterized by biophysical methods. The binding motif is context dependent; homopyrimidine PNAs combine with complementary polypurine targets to form stoichiometric 2:1 complexes, whereas PNAs containing both purine and ...

Summary A comparative study was carried out on fibre length and microfibril angle in Betula pendula Roth. Fibre length increased and microfibril angle decreased from pith to bark. Microfibril angle remained constant from the 15 th annual ring from the pith, to the outermost ring. Fibre length also reached a maximum length at this point although there were some differences at the 30 th ring from the pith.
