Observations of a wave generated below, and propagating with, an elevated mesoscale convective system (MCS) are presented. The MCS and the wave tracked directly across the 90 km extent of the observational network deployed for the Convective Storm Initiation Project (CSIP) and maintained a coherent structure and velocity during this 1.5 hour period. The rear-inflow jet of the MCS was observed to impact upon, but not penetrate, the stable undercurrent that was located beneath the MCS, apparently constricting ...

The drive to characterize functions of human genes on a global scale has stimulated interest in large-scale generation of mouse mutants. Conventional germ-cell mutagenesis with N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) is compromised by an inability to monitor mutation efficiency, strain1 and interlocus2 variation in mutation induction, and extensive husbandry requirements. To overcome these obstacles and develop new methods for generating mouse mutants, we devised protocols to generate germline chimaeric mice ...

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), with their well-ordered pore networks and tunable surface chemistries, offer a versatile platform for preparing well-defined nanostructures wherein functionality such as catalysis can be incorporated. Notably, atomic layer deposition (ALD) in MOFs has recently emerged as a versatile approach to functionalize MOF surfaces with a wide variety of catalytic metal-oxo species. Understanding the structure of newly deposited species and how they are tethered within the MOF ...

Particulate hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a human lung carcinogen and a human health concern. The induction of structural chromosome instability is considered to be a driving mechanism of Cr(VI)-induced carcinogenesis. Homologous recombination repair protects against Cr(VI)-induced chromosome damage, due to its highly accurate repair of Cr(VI)-induced DNA double strand breaks. However, recent studies demonstrate Cr(VI) inhibits homologous recombination repair through the misregulation of RAD51. ...

Purpose The authors evaluated the outcome of 49 hospitalized patients with sepsis and possible acute cholecystitis in whom emergency percutaneous cholecystostomy was attempted on 50 occasions. Patients and Methods All cholecystostomy procedures were performed with ultrasound (US) guidance by using either the trocar (n = 35) or the Seldinger (n = 15) technique. Forty of the 50 cholecystostomies (80%) were attempted at the patients’ bedside, and 49 of the 50 catheters (98%) were placed successfully. Results ...

H(+)-K(+)-ATPase activity of rabbit isolated gastric microsomes was irreversibly inactivated by reducing agents, such as 2-mercaptoethanol and dithiothreitol. Similar to what has been observed for Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase, high concentrations of reagents, at moderately elevated temperatures, were required to inactivate H(+)-K(+)-ATPase, suggesting relative inaccessibility of the responsible disulfide bonds. Resistance against inactivation was conferred by monovalent cation activators of K(+)-stimulated ...

The beneficial association between nature contact and human health is often explained with psycho-evolutionary frameworks such as stress reduction theory and the savanna hypothesis. However, evidence is limited on how natural environments that are not green affect stress. One example is the desert, which does not offer affordances for nourishment or safety in an evolutionary sense. In this study, we determine the effect of a virtual reality (VR) exposure to a desert vs. green environment among 95 ...

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are typically synthesized using solvothermal conditions (>120 °C, >72 hours) in harmful organic solvents. Here we report a strategy to rapidly (<60 minutes) synthesize imine-linked COFs in aqueous acetic acid using sonochemistry and thus avoid most of the disadvantages of solvothermal methods. Using the sonochemical method, we synthesized to our knowledge previously unreported COFs. The crystallinity and porosity of these COFs is comparable to or better than those of ...

Endolithic (rock-dwelling) microbial communities are ubiquitous in hyper-arid deserts around the world and the last resort for life under extreme aridity. These communities are excellent models to explore biotic and abiotic drivers of diversity because they are of low complexity. Eukaryotic initiation factor 4A (eIF4A) is a highly conserved RNA-stimulated ATPase and helicase involved in the initiation of messenger RNA translation. Previously, we found that eIF4A interacts with cyclin-dependent kinase A (CDKA), the plant ortholog of mammalian CDK1. Here, we show that this interaction occurs only in proliferating cells where the two proteins coassociate with 5'-cap-binding protein complexes, eIF4F or the plant-specific eIFiso4F. CDKA phosphorylates eIF4A on a conserved threonine ...

The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone (RAAS) and renal dopaminergic systems interact to maintain sodium balance. High NaCl intake increases renal synthesis of dopamine and dopaminergic receptor activity, decreasing epithelial sodium transport, whereas sodium deficit activates the RAAS, increasing epithelial sodium transport. We tested the hypothesis that attenuation of the natriuretic effect of dopamine D1-like receptors during salt restriction results in part from increased RAAS activity in seven salt- ...

Intracellular lipids and their synthesis contribute to the mechanisms and complications of obesity-associated diseases. We describe an NMR approach that provides an abbreviated lipidomic analysis with concurrent lipid biosynthetic fluxes.
