We present a new real space Newton-based computational approach to computing the properties of inhomogeneous polymer systems with density functional theory (DFT). The DFT is made computationally efficient by modeling the polymers as freely jointed chains and obtaining direct correlation functions from polymer reference interaction site model calculations. The code we present can solve the DFT equations in up to three dimensions using a parallel implementation. In addition we describe our implementation ...

The effect of aromatic substitution on the singlet-triplet energy gap in substituted phenyl(carbomethoxy)carbene (X-Ph-C-CO(2)CH(3), PCC) has been explored by time-resolved infrared (TRIR) spectroscopy and gas-phase computational methods. The ground state of para-substituted PCC is calculated to change from the triplet state in p-NO(2)-PCC (Delta G(ST) = 6.1 kcal/mol) to the singlet state in p-NH(2)-PCC (Delta G(ST) = -2.8 kcal/mol). The absence of solvent perturbation in the TRIR spectra of p-N(CH(3))(2)- ...

Neal T. Frink, John E. Lamar,

This paper describes a water-tunnel study of the vortex breakdown characteristics of a large number of analytically designed vortex strakes tested in combination with a moderate-aspect-ratio trapezoidal wing. A wide range of strake sizes and slenderness ratios are covered, and examples of the effects of the primary design parameters of size, span, and slenderness on the vortex breakdown characteristics are presented and analyzed in relation to the three-dimensional leading-edge suction distributions. ...

John Westlake Frink, Harry A. Kues,

The Corcoran clay represents a unique departure from the continental alluvial fan deposition of the Quaternary of the San Joaquin Valley. It is massive, silty clay, highly diatomaceous, 50-120 feet thick, generally 200-800 feet beneath the surface, extending over an area greater than 4,000 square miles. The Corcoran clay is involved in a southward plunging, open syncline of which the west flank is the steeper. Present evidence limits the age between extreme upper Pliocene and mid-Pleistocene. New tert-butyl, picolyl and fluorinated analogues of capromorelin (3), a short-acting growth hormone secretagogue (GHS), were prepared as part of a program to identify long-acting GHSs that increase 24-h plasma IGF-1 levels. Compounds 4c and 4d (ACD LogD values ≥2.9) displayed extended plasma elimination half-lives in dogs, primarily due to high volumes of distribution, but showed weak GH secretagogue activities in rats (ED50s>10 mg/kg). A less lipophilic derivative 4 (ACD LogD=1.6) exhibited a shorter ...

We have previously described osteoblast/osteocyte factor 45 (OF45), a novel bone-specific extracellular matrix protein, and demonstrated that its expression is tightly linked to mineralization and bone formation. In this report, we have cloned and characterized the mouse OF45 cDNA and genomic region. Mouse OF45 (also called MEPE) was similar to its rat orthologue in that its expression was increased during mineralization in osteoblast cultures and the protein was highly expressed within the osteocytes ...

The common participation of oncogenic KRAS proteins in many of the most lethal human cancers, together with the ease of detecting somatic KRAS mutant alleles in patient samples, has spurred persistent and intensive efforts to develop drugs that inhibit KRAS activity. However, advances have been hindered by the pervasive inter- and intra-lineage diversity in the targetable mechanisms that underlie KRAS-driven cancers, limited pharmacological accessibility of many candidate synthetic-lethal interactions ...

John W. Frink,

Hales Bar Dam was built on cavernous Mississippian limestone, by a private power company, from 1905 to 1913. Inadequate foundation treatment and lack of realization of the true conditions beneath the dam resulted in serious leakage through the foundation. Several attempts were made to stop the leaks, but none were successful until a four-year repair program was undertaken by the Tennessee Valley Authority, in 1940. Most of the caves were the result of solution of shattered limestone along two small ...

Drug resistance remains an ongoing challenge for the majority of patients treated with inhibitors of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) pathway, a key regulator of tumor angiogenesis. Preclinical models have played a significant role in identifying multiple complex mechanisms of antiangiogenic treatment failure. Yet questions remain about the optimal methodology to study resistance that may assist in making clinically relevant choices about alternative or combination treatment strategies. ...

John E. Lamar, Neal T. Frink,

Sixteen analytically and empirically designed strakes have been aerodynamically tested on a common wing-body to determine the longitudinal characteristics of the configurations. These strakes were selected, in general, due to their superior performance in a water-tunnel test. There they exhibited a good correlation between the hypothesized high value of angle of attack for strake vortex breakdown and the high value of leading-edge suction at the strake tip. The lift and pitch data were reasonably ...

The present multi-study research investigation was designed to examine the conceptualization and measurement of the accountability construct, and to provide scale development and validation evidence for the Individual Accountability in Organizations Scale (IAOS). The results of the studies are reported that demonstrate consistency of the factor structure across studies, construct validity, and criterion-related validity of the IAOS. As hypothesized, a three-factor structure emerged from factor analyses ...
