Neuropathic pain (NP) is often refractory to pharmacologic and noninterventional treatment. On behalf of the International Association for the Study of Pain Neuropathic Pain Special Interest Group, the authors evaluated systematic reviews, clinical trials, and existing guidelines for the interventional management of NP. Evidence is summarized and presented for neural blockade, spinal cord stimulation (SCS), intrathecal medication, and neurosurgical interventions in patients with the following peripheral ...

A study of the clogging of two soils, a sand with grains ranging from 0.4 to 4 mm, and a gravel with grains ranging from 1 to 10 mm, was carried out by feeding the bacteria initially present in the soils. The focus of this research is to study the durability of bioclogging. The results showed that clogging occurred quickly after the injection of nutrients. The soils were subjected to gradient increases and a critical hydraulic gradient icrit (corresponding to the gradient for which unclogging occurred ...

A computerized version of the Revised Mental Rotations Test using touch-screen technology was tested and compared with the paper-and-pencil version. One hundred ninety-two participants—133 women and 59 men— took the paper-and-pencil version; 91 participants—47 women and 44 men—took the touch-screen version. Standard scores × test half and the entire test, proportion of errors × type, and proportion correct × alternative type were calculated. The expected gender differences occurred in standard scores ...

Low vitamin K status is associated with low BMD and increased fracture risk. Additionally, a specific menaquinone, menatetrenone (MK4), may reduce fracture risk. However, whether vitamin K plays a role in the skeletal health of North American women remains unclear. Moreover, various K vitamers (e.g., phylloquinone and MK4) may have differing skeletal effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of phylloquinone or MK4 treatment on markers of skeletal turnover and BMD in nonosteoporotic, ...

The internal surrogate ratio method allows for the determination of an unknown cross section, such as $(n,\ensuremath{\gamma})$, relative to a better-known cross section, such as $(n,f)$, by measuring the relative exit-channel probabilities of a surrogate reaction that proceeds through the same compound nucleus. The validity of the internal surrogate ratio method is tested by comparing the relative $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and fission exit-channel probabilities of a $^{236}\mathrm{U}{}^{*}$ compound nucleus, ...

From June to August 2018, the eruption of Kīlauea volcano on the island of Hawai'i injected millions of cubic meters of molten lava into the nutrient-poor waters of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. The lava-impacted seawater was characterized by high concentrations of metals and nutrients that stimulated phytoplankton growth, resulting in an extensive plume of chlorophyll a that was detectable by satellite. Chemical and molecular evidence revealed that this biological response hinged on unexpectedly ...

Abstract Mesoscale eddies have been shown to support elevated dinitrogen (N 2 ) fixation rates (NFRs) and abundances of N 2 ‐fixing microorganisms (diazotrophs), but the mechanisms underlying these observations are not well understood. We sampled two pairs of mesoscale cyclones and anticyclones in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre in 2017 and 2018 and compared our observations with seasonal patterns from the Hawaii Ocean Time‐series (HOT) program. Consistent with previous reports, we found that NFRs were ...

The increase in detector count is made possible by lenslet-coupled trichroic polarization-sensitive pixels fabricated at Argonne National Laboratory, new 68 $$\times $$ frequency-domain multiplexing readout electronics, and a higher-throughput optical design. We have developed superconducting Ti transition-edge sensors with Au protection layers on the top and bottom for the South Pole Telescope's third-generation receiver (a cosmic microwave background polarimeter, due to be upgraded this austral summer of 2017/2018). The base Au layer (deposited on a thin Ti glue layer) isolates the Ti from any substrate effects; the top Au layer protects the Ti from oxidation during processing and subsequent use of the sensors. We control the transition temperature and ...

The third-generation upgrade to the receiver on the South Pole Telescope, SPT-3G, was installed at the South Pole during the 2016–2017 austral summer to measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background. Increasing the number of detectors by a factor of 10 to $$\sim 16,000$$ required the multiplexing factor to increase to 68 and the bandwidth of the frequency-division readout electronics to span 1.6–5.2 MHz. This increase necessitates low-thermal conductance, low-inductance cryogenic wiring. ...

We present measurements of the $E$-mode ($EE$) polarization power spectrum and temperature-$E$-mode ($TE$) cross-power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background using data collected by SPT-3G, the latest instrument installed on the South Pole Telescope. This analysis uses observations of a $1500\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{deg}}^{2}$ region at 95, 150, and 220 GHz taken over a four-month period in 2018. We report binned values of the $EE$ and $TE$ power spectra over the angular multipole range $300\ensuremath{\ ...

SPT-3G is the third survey receiver operating on the South Pole Telescope dedicated to high-resolution observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Sensitive measurements of the temperature and polarization anisotropies of the CMB provide a powerful dataset for constraining cosmology. Additionally, CMB surveys with arcminute-scale resolution are capable of detecting galaxy clusters, millimeter-wave bright galaxies, and a variety of transient phenomena. The SPT-3G instrument provides a significant ...

We present a measurement of gravitational lensing over 1500 deg2 of the Southern sky using SPT-3G temperature data at 95 GHz and 150 GHz taken in 2018. The lensing amplitude relative to a fiducial Planck 2018 Lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmology is found to be 1.020±0.060, excluding instrumental and astrophysical systematic uncertainties. We conduct extensive systematic and null tests to check the robustness of the lensing measurements, and report a minimum-variance combined lensing power spectrum ...
