Previous interpreters of Dziga Vertov's Three Songs of Lenin (1934; reedited in 1938 and 1970) have tended to read the film as either a drastic and regrettable break with his experimental practice of the 1920s, or (more rarely) as a grand summation of many aspects of that practice. Both readings have assumed that the figure of Joseph Stalin was essentially absent from the original 1934 version, while offering different reasons for that presumed absence. The present essay argues for a different reading ...

This article reads the contrasting topographies structuring autobiographical narratives by US slaves and Russian serfs as constitutive of specific imaginings of freedom and constraints on freedom. It argues for seeing the classic "passage" of the bondsman from slavery to freedom as a kind of "passing" involving the manipulation of categories provided by dominant racial (US) or state (Russia) ideologies. The final inability of the bondsman to "pass" into a space of true freedom forces us to posit a fourth ...

ROBERT ERICKSON'S CREATIVE activity has been distinguished, even in his earlier works, by a great sensitivity and adaptability to new ideas and influences and for its remarkable rapport between composition and experimental theory. It is not really possible to take either the compositions or the theoretical work as the primary goal of Erickson's creative thinkingrather, in looking at his rich and varied output, one is faced with a twodimensional process of exploration, balanced between the purely ...
