Bengt Holmström, John Roberts,
Both transaction cost-economics and property-rights theories offer explanations of the boundaries of the firm based on ideas of ex post bargaining and holdup. These theories are quite distinct in their empirical predictions, but neither offers a satisfactory account of a large variety of observed practices. The authors discuss a number of such examples, where the boundaries of the firm seem to be determined by factors other than the need to protect investments, and where other mechanisms than the ...

The response of a strongly driven Rabi transition, which is associated with a strongly driven two-level atom, is studied. Such a driven Rabi transition exhibits Mollow splitting including gain features, and the Mollow spectrum associated with the original transition is also altered. We demonstrate that driving the Rabi transition produces a new transition at its own Rabi frequency, which can be driven to exhibit further Mollow splitting. Our experimental results are in good agreement with theory ...

Although wide surgical excision is the accepted treatment for thin malignant melanomas, there is reason to believe that narrower margins may be adequate. We conducted a randomized prospective study to assess the efficacy of narrow excision (excision with 1-cm margins) for primary melanomas no thicker than 2 mm. Narrow excision was performed in 305 patients, and wide excision (margins of 3 cm or more) was performed in 307 patients. The major prognostic criteria were well balanced in the two groups. ...

A rapid and simple assay has been developed which allows specific detection of Listeria monocytogenes within 3.5 h in cultures prepared from suspect food samples and propagated 48 h in selective medium. The assay is based on PCR technology, and uses a specific primer set derived from sequences located down-stream of the hlyA gene. The specificity of the primer set was confirmed by testing 115 L. monocytogenes, 14 L. innocua, 5 L. seeligeri and 4 L. ivanovii isolates. The assay was compared to standard ...

ABSTRACT Nuclear morphological changes during apoptosis are very distinct and effector caspases have been implicated to play a central role in these processes. To investigate this in greater detail we examined the effect of blocking caspase activity and its activation on the nuclear morphological change in Jurkat T cells undergoing apoptosis after staurosporine treatment. In the presence of caspase inhibitors, like benzyloxycarbonyl-Val-Ala-Asp fluoro-methylketone (z-VAD-FMK), N-acetyl Tyr-Val-Ala- ...

Apoptosis or programmed cell death plays an essential role during development of the immune system, in immune responses, and in the control of tissue homeostasis in the adult. An important physiological mediator of apoptosis is the Fas/APO-1/CD95 receptor (FasR), a surface receptor belonging to the tumor necrosis factor receptor family. Apoptosis consists of a series of characteristic features that occur following activation of caspases, a collective term for apoptosis-specific proteases. The focus ...

The mechanism of Fas antigen‐mediated apoptosis is at present unclear. We show here that the100,000 × g supernatant from cell lysates prepared from anti‐Fas‐stimulated JURKAT T cells, induces chromatin fragmentation in isolated nuclei with concomitant morphological changes typically seen in apoptosis. The formation of this apoptotic nuclei promoting activity (ANPA) in JURKAT T cells after Fas antigen ligation was blocked by the serine protease inhibitors, TPCK and DCI, and by the interleukin 1‐β‐converting ...

A two-level system is driven by two strong fields, one on resonance and one close to resonance. There is a resonance-like response of the coupled atom-field system when the detuning of the second field is an integer fraction of the Rabi frequency of the resonant field. These subharmonic resonances are monitored by a transition to a third level and give a characteristic spectrum dominated by a series of doublets.

Functional responses describe how changing resource availability affects consumer resource use, thus providing a mechanistic approach to prediction of the invasibility and potential damage of invasive alien species (IAS). However, functional responses can be context dependent, varying with resource characteristics and availability, consumer attributes, and environmental variables. Identifying context dependencies can allow invasion and damage risk to be predicted across different ecoregions. Understanding ...
