The Cosmological Advanced Survey Telescope for Optical and UV Research (CASTOR) is a proposed CSA mission that would make a unique, powerful, and lasting contribution to astrophysics by providing panoramic, high-resolution imaging in the UV/optical (0.15 - 0.55 μm) spectral region. This versatile `smallSAT'-class mission would far surpass any ground-based optical telescope in terms of angular resolution, and would provide ultra-deep imaging in three broad lters to supplement longer-wavelength data from ...

Social disruption (SDR), a murine model of social stress, altered the phenotype and function of spleen immune cells. Previous reports indicated that following SDR spleens contained higher numbers of CD11b+ monocytes, and these cells were less sensitive to the inhibitory effects of glucocorticoids on cell viability. Additionally, lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated splenocytes from SDR mice secreted higher levels of the proinflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6 compared ...

The Canadian Advanced Network For Astronomical Research (CANFAR) is a 2 1/2-year project that is delivering a network-enabled platform for the accessing, processing, storage, analysis, and distribution of very large astronomical datasets. The CANFAR infrastructure is being implemented as an International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA) compliant web service infrastructure. A challenging feature of the project is to channel all survey data through Canadian research cyberinfrastructure. Sitting ...

The present study was undertaken to explore the possible mechanisms of the behavioral alterations that develop in response to cancer and to cancer therapy. For this purpose we used a syngeneic heterotopic mouse model of human papilloma virus (HPV)-related head and neck cancer in which cancer therapy is curative. Mice implanted or not with HPV+ tumor cells were exposed to sham treatment or a regimen of cisplatin and radiotherapy (chemoradiation). Sickness was measured by body weight loss and reduced ...

Glucocorticoids have successfully been used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Data suggest that 7alpha-hydroxy-dehydroepiandrosterone (7alpha-OH-DHEA), an immunostimulating metabolite of dehydroepiandrosterone, can block glucocorticoid-induced immune suppression. Formation of 7alpha-OH-DHEA is catalyzed by activity of cytochrome p450 enzyme 7b (Cyp7b). Recently, we reported that tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, IL-1alpha, IL-1beta and IL-17 enhance Cyp7b mRNA expression and induce a concomitant ...

The cytochrome P450 enzyme CYP7B catalyzes the conversion of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) into 7alpha-hydroxy-DHEA (7alpha-OH-DHEA). This metabolite can stimulate the immune response. We previously reported that the severity of murine collagen-induced arthritis is correlated with CYP7B messenger RNA (mRNA) expression and activity in the arthritic joint. The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of 7alpha-OH-DHEA in synovial samples and the cytokine regulation of CYP7B activity in fibroblast- ...

Abstract We report on the stellar occultation by (523764) 2014 WC 510 observed on 2018 December 1 UT. This occultation campaign was part of the Research and Education Collaborative Occultation Network (RECON), a network of small telescopes spread over 2000 km in western USA and Canada. Light curves from six stations revealed three groups of two or more consecutive flux drops correlated in time between adjacent stations. A Bayesian model comparison reveals that a model with a double object occulting ...

Exchange protein directly activated by cAMP-1 (Epac1) is a cAMP sensor that regulates multiple cellular functions including cellular migration, proliferation and differentiation. Classically, Epac1 is thought to exert its effects through binding of cAMP leading to a conformational change in Epac1 and its accumulation at the plasma membrane (PM) where it activates Rap1. In search for regulators of Epac1 activity, we show here that importin β1 (impβ1) is an Epac1 binding partner that prevents PM accumulation ...

Hyperexcitability of peripheral nociceptive pathways is often associated with inflammation and is an important mechanism underlying inflammatory pain. Here we describe a completely novel mechanism via which nociceptor G-protein-coupled receptor kinase 2 (GRK2) contributes to regulation of inflammatory hyperalgesia. We show that nociceptor GRK2 is downregulated during inflammation. In addition, we show for the first time that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2)-induced hyperalgesia is prolonged from <6 h in wild- ...

Chronic pain associated with inflammation is a common clinical problem, and the underlying mechanisms have only begun to be unraveled. GRK2 regulates cellular signaling by promoting G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) desensitization and direct interaction with downstream kinases including p38. The aim of this study was to determine the contribution of GRK2 to regulation of inflammatory pain and to unravel the underlying mechanism. GRK2 +/− mice with an ∼50% reduction in GRK2 developed increased and markedly ...

We present a new occultation event simulator for the Trans-Neptunian Automated Occultation Survey (TAOS II). We have developed a method to compute occultation shadows by small objects with non-circular apparent shapes (as may result from an intrinsic morphology or from the projection of a contact binary). The new simulator calculates diffraction features in the occultation shadows, as well as resulting light curves as would be measured by the TAOS II survey system. We include effects such as the spectral ...

The molecular mechanisms determining magnitude and duration of inflammatory pain are still unclear. We assessed the contribution of G protein-coupled receptor kinase (GRK)-6 to inflammatory hyperalgesia in mice. We showed that GRK6 is a critical regulator of severity and duration of cytokine-induced hyperalgesia. In GRK6−/− mice, a significantly lower dose (100 times lower) of intraplantar interleukin (IL)-1β was sufficient to induce hyperalgesia compared with wild-type (WT) mice. In addition, IL-1β ...
