Abstract Stream functions are dervied for a spherical droplet in creeping flow with an arbitary surface tension gradient at its interface. The stream functions are used to show theoretically that the terminal velocity is reduced and that the interfacial velocity is retarded, especially near the rear of the droplet, when a trace of surfactant is present in the exterior phase and when surface aging is controlled by diffusion.

Burkitt lymphoma (BL) cells retain a high inherent propensity to undergo apoptosis indicating that net growth of the tumour population in vivo is likely to be influenced profoundly by its micro-environment. Here we investigate micro-environmental factors that affect BL-cell survival in vitro. We show that survival, and consequently net production, of tumour cells is enhanced by autocrine factors and, to a greater extent, by paracrine factors provided by relevant stromal elements of the tumour (fibroblasts ...

Abstract Background To investigate the association of DNA nucleotide excision repair (NER) defects with neurological degeneration, cachexia and cancer, we performed autopsies on 4 adult xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) patients with different clinical features and defects in NER complementation groups XP-A, XP-C or XP-D. Results The XP-A (XP12BE) and XP-D (XP18BE) patients exhibited progressive neurological deterioration with sensorineural hearing loss. The clinical spectrum encompassed severe cachexia in ...

Infliximab is a humanized antibody against tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) that is used in the treatment of Crohn's disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Approximately 147,000 patients throughout the world have received infliximab. Excess TNF-α in association with tuberculosis may cause weight loss and night sweats, yet in animal models it has a protective role in the host response to tuberculosis. There is no direct evidence of a protective role of TNF-α in patients with tuberculosis.

Abstract Effective treatment of pediatric solid tumors has been hampered by the predominance of currently “undruggable” driver transcription factors. Improving outcomes while decreasing the toxicity of treatment necessitates the development of novel agents that can directly inhibit or degrade these elusive targets. MYCN in pediatric neural-derived tumors, including neuroblastoma and medulloblastoma, is a paradigmatic example of this problem. Attempts to directly and specifically target MYCN have ...

Abstract Introduction. In 1945, Levens and Enders (1) observed that the amniotic and allantoic fluids of chick embryos infected with mumps virus agglutinated the erythrocytes of the hen.1 This agglutination was specifically inhibited by high dilutions of serum of man and the rhesus monkey convalescent from mumps. Human sera taken early in the disease and normal monkey sera in most instances inhibited hemaggalutination only in low dilutions. But with certain specimens of normal or “acute” serum inhibition ...

Abstract Following the discovery that the virus of mumps can be propagated in the developing hen's egg (1, 2), studies have been carried out at the Harvard Medical School on various properties of the egg-virus. Most of the results will be described subsequently in detail. But in this communication, because of their potential application to the problem of vaccination against mumps, certain experiments will be separately outlined which indicate that the pathogenicity of the virus for the monkey, and ...

Summary Objective Multiple diagnostic modalities may be needed to establish the source of excessive androgen production in women. The role of selective venous catheterization in this process has not been established fully. Design A study of hyperandrogenaemic subjects and literature review. Patients Four hyperandrogenaemic women and an additional 132 previously reported cases with available testing data and a pathological diagnosis were evaluated. Measurements Serum androgens, diagnostic imaging ...

Most of the Officer Basin in South Australia is covered either by Pleistocene sand dunes or by Cretaceous to Quaternary platform carbonates. Seismic coverage is poor and there are little well data available. For these reasons, potential field data are of particular importance in interpreting the morphology and understanding the development of the Officer Basin. Both the Bouguer gravity and total magnetic intensity (TMI) gridded-data sets give an excellent image of the overall morphology of the basin; ...
