Objective: To evaluate (1) systematic assessment of exercise tolerance in adolescents shortly after sport-related concussion (SRC) and (2) the prognostic utility of such assessment. Design: Prospective randomized controlled trial. Setting: University and community sports medicine centers. Participants: Adolescents with SRC (1–9 days from injury). Sixty-five were randomized and 54 completed the study (mean age 15 years, 4 days after injury). Interventions: Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test (BCTT, n = 27) ...

Abstract Massive investments in climate change mitigation and adaptation are projected during coming decades. Many of these investments will seek to modify how land is managed. The return on both types of investments can be increased through an understanding of land potential: the potential of the land to support primary production and ecosystem services, and its resilience. A Land‐Potential Knowledge System (LandPKS) is being developed and implemented to provide individual users with point‐based ...

Ecosystem accounts, as formalized by the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting Experimental Ecosystem Accounts (SEEA EEA), have been compiled in a number of countries, yet there have been few attempts to develop them for the U.S. We explore the potential for U.S. ecosystem accounting by compiling ecosystem extent, condition, and ecosystem services supply and use accounts for a 10-state region in the Southeast. The pilot accounts address air quality, water quality, biodiversity, carbon storage, ...

In this study, we develop urban ecosystem accounts in the U.S., using the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting Experimental Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA EEA) framework. Most ecosystem accounts focus on regional and national scales, which are appropriate for many ecosystem services. However, ecosystems provide substantial services in cities, improving quality of life and contributing to resiliency for substantial parts of the population. Our models estimate energy savings for indoor cooling resulting ...

The United States and European Union (EU) face common challenges in managing natural capital and balancing conservation and resource use with consumption of other forms of capital. This paper synthesizes findings from 11 individual application papers from a special issue of Ecosystem Services on natural capital accounting (NCA) and their application to the public and private sectors in the EU and U.S. NCA is inherently a data-integration centered exercise, aiming to draw new insights by realigning ...

Radiology and public health have an emerging opportunity to collaborate, in which radiology’s vast supply of imaging data can be integrated into public health information systems for epidemiologic assessments and responses to population health problems. Fueling the linkage of radiology and public health include (i) the transition from analog film to digital formats, enabling flexible use of radiologic data; (ii) radiology’s role in imaging across nearly all medical and surgical subspecialties, which ...

Our understanding of the population genetics of Phytophthora infestans has increased dramatically during the past decade. In addition to satisfying scientific curiosity, we expect that this understanding will lead to im provements in tomato and potato late blight management. We briefly describe the classical population biology/genetics of P. in Jestans to provide context for this review. Potato late blight caused by P. infestans was probably first observed outside of central Mexico in 1842 in ...

We tested the hypothesis that the population of Phytophthora infestans in the Toluca valley region is genetically differentiated according to habitat. Isolates were sampled in three habitats from (i) wild Solanum spp. (WILD), (ii) land-race varieties in low-input production systems (RURAL), and (iii) modern cultivars in high-input agriculture (VALLEY). Isolates were sampled in 1988-89 (n= 179) and in 1997-98 (n= 389). In both sampling periods, the greatest genetic diversity was observed in RURAL and VALLEY ...

Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry has been found to produce reliable exact mass measurements using two different internal calibration methods. For these measurements, electrospray ionization (ESI) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) were utilized both individually and in tandem. For internal calibration with a co-dissolved polyethylene glycol standard, measurements of 41 compounds resulted in an average absolute mass determination error of 0.7 ppm, with ...

Herein, we characterize the Toll-like receptor (TLR)-to-NF-κB innate immune pathway of Orbicella faveolata (Of), which is an ecologically important, disease-susceptible, reef-building coral. As compared to human TLRs, the intracellular TIR domain of Of-TLR is most similar to TLR4, and it can interact in vitro with the human TLR4 adapter MYD88. Treatment of O. faveolata tissue with lipopolysaccharide, a ligand for mammalian TLR4, resulted in gene expression changes consistent with NF-κB pathway mobilization. ...

PURPOSE To assess whether reirradiation (re-RT) and concurrent bevacizumab (BEV) improve overall survival (OS) and/or progression-free survival (PFS), compared with BEV alone in recurrent glioblastoma (GBM). METHODS NRG Oncology/RTOG1205 is a prospective, phase II, randomized trial of re-RT and BEV versus BEV alone. Stratification factors included age, ...

The nuclear DNA contents of 145 isolates of Phytophthora infestans from the central highlands of Mexico (the centre of origin of this oomycete), northwestern Mexico, and northeastern Mexico were measured by quantifying the fluorescence from nuclei stained with 4,6-diamidino-2-phenyl-indole (DAPI). Isolates were collected over several different years. Isolates that had been repeatedly subcultured tended to have higher DNA contents than had isolates from storage. Therefore, the DNA contents were measured ...

RTOG 1205 is the first, multi-institutional, prospective randomized phase II trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of re-irradiation for recurrent glioblastoma using modern radiation therapy (RT) techniques. We report clinical outcomes and results of the RT plan quality review. Eligible patients (pts) were randomized 1:1 to hypofractionated reirradiation (HFRT, 35 Gy in 10 fractions) with concurrent bevacizumab (BEV) IV 10 mg/kg q2 wks vs. BEV alone. Primary endpoint was improved median survival ...

Abstract This study sought to determine whether re-irradiation (ReRT) and concurrent bevacizumab (BEV) improves overall survival (OS) compared to BEV alone in recurrent glioblastoma (GBM). Patients (pts) were randomized 1:1 to ReRT (35 Gy/10 fractions) plus BEV (IV 10 mg/kg q2 wks) vs. BEV alone. With 160 pts, there was 80% power to detect a 31% reduction in death hazard for BEV+RT at a one-sided significance level of 0.10 using a log rank test. OS and PFS were estimated by Kaplan-Meier and HRs estimated ...

Recent changes to the guidelines for screening and early diagnosis of lung cancer have increased the interest in preserving post-radiotherapy lung function. Current investigational approaches are based on spatially mapping functional regions and generating regional avoidance plans that preferentially spare highly ventilated/perfused lung. A potentially critical, yet overlooked, aspect of functional avoidance is radiation injury to peripheral airways, which serve as gas conduits to and from functional ...

Functional lung avoidance (FLA) radiation therapy (RT) aims to minimize post-RT pulmonary toxicity by preferentially avoiding dose to high-functioning lung (HFL) regions. A common limitation is that FLA approaches do not consider the conducting architecture for gas exchange. We previously proposed the functionally weighted airway sparing (FWAS) method to spare airways connected to HFL regions, showing that it is possible to substantially reduce risk of radiation-induced airway injury. Here, we compare ...
