John O’Donoghue, John J. Herbert,

Pervasive environments generate large quantities of data, originating from backend servers, portable devices, and wireless mobile sensors. Pervasive sensing devices that monitor properties of the environment (including human beings) can be a large data source. Unprocessed datasets may include data that is faulty and irrelevant, and data that is important and useful. If not managed correctly the large amount of data from a data-rich pervasive environment may result in information overload or delivery ...

Within Africa, the burden of heart failure is significant. This arises from the increase in cardiovascular disease and associated risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes, as well as causes of heart failure which are particular to sub-Saharan Africa, such as endomyocardial fibrosis. The lack of access to echocardiography and other imaging modalities, from a cost and technical perspective, combined with the predominantly rural nature of many countries with poor transport links, means that the ...

Abstract A study carried out in five nursing homes and 13 general practitioner practices in the North West National Health Service region investigated medicine use in the homes and assessed the extent of inappropriate prescribing using consensus derived criteria. A review of the medical and nursing records of 101 residents showed that they were using a total of 714 items (mean 7.1; range 0 to 15), of which 659 were medicines, including 51 dressings, and 55 were other items such as stoma products. ...

Contemporary research into virtual learning embraces the concept that the constraints of time and place of study are eliminated. The potential market it could therefore encapsulate is phenomenal and the subsequent changes that threaten to ricochet through the higher education sector can be described as evolutionary. Whilst concurrently being an incredibly exciting prospect for future learners, online learning is also making the traditional 'bricks and mortar' higher education establishment extremely ...

Many educational journals have debated the issue of the “virtual university”. As technology is improving and evolving, such “virtuality” becomes a reality. The forecasts are that, in the not too distant future, it will be possible for courses to be completed solely by the use of the World Wide Web or Internet. These “virtual classrooms” will take the place of the solid buildings where students currently attend lectures, at set times in set rooms. The information will be gathered at the student's convenience ...
