John T. Retallack, Hugh F. Clifford,

Sounding Creek is a moderately saline prairie stream located in E-central Alberta, Canada. Total drainage area at the study site is 6600 km2; however, the basin is endorheic, and extensive areas of the stream dry up each summer. The stream sup- ports a diverse crustacean fauna, 60 species having been identified; and about one half of these were abundant at some time during the 2 years (1972-1973) that the stream was regularly sampled. Phyllopods (Anostraca and Conchostraca) were especially abun- dant. ...

Hormone receptor status is an integral component of decision-making in breast cancer management. IHC4 score is an algorithm that combines hormone receptor, HER2, and Ki-67 status to provide a semiquantitative prognostic score for breast cancer. High accuracy and low interobserver variance are important to ensure the score is accurately calculated; however, few previous efforts have been made to measure or decrease interobserver variance. We developed a Web-based training tool, called "Score the Core" ( ...

Abstract The calcium (Ca) metabolism of established human lactation was studied in 40 adult women (mean age 32.4 years) who had been breast-feeding for 6 months (Lac) and in 40 age-matched controls (Con) using fasting urine and blood biochemistry and forearm single-photon bone mineral densitometry (BMD). Serial studies were performed up to 6 months after weaning in Lac women and repeated once in Con women. During lactation the significant findings were (1) a selective reduction (7.1%, P < 0.03) in BMD ...

The purpose of this comment is to question the organic nature of the material described by Retallack (2011) as ‘problematic megafossils’ from the Moodlatana and Balcoracana Formations, Lake Frome Group of the Flinders Ranges, South Australia. By way of introduction, we note that there is a considerable history of structures described from sedimentary rocks as fossils that do not stand up to scrutiny (Hofmann 1971, 1992, 2005). The literature is replete with what Hofmann (1992) regarded as dubiofossils. ...

The circumsporozoite protein (CSP) of Plasmodium falciparum is a major surface protein, which forms a dense coat on the sporozoite's surface. Preclinical research on CSP and clinical evaluation of a CSP fragment-based RTS, S/AS01 vaccine have demonstrated a modest degree of protection against P. falciparum, mediated in part by humoral immunity and in part by cell-mediated immunity. Given the partial protective efficacy of the RTS, S/AS01 vaccine in a recent Phase 3 trial, further improvement of CSP- ...

Evidence is presented that the reactions of alkyl azidoformates with norbornylene induced by direct irradiation do not involve intermediate triazolines. The products of this, and acetophenone-photosenzitized reaction of the mixtures in cyclohexane, are described and contrasted with those from the direct photolysis of the corresponding N-alkoxycarbonyl triazolines. The action of aqueous dioxane at 170° converted 2,3-iminonorbornane (3-azatricylo[3.2.1.0 2,4 ]octane) into 3-aminonortricyclene and syn- ...

Joan Retallack's conversations with Cage represent the first consideration of his artistic production in its entirety, across genres. Informed by the perspective of age, Cage's comments range freely from his theories of chance and indeterminate composition to his long-time collaboration with Merce Cunningham to the aesthetics of his multi-media works. A composer for whom the whole world - with its brimming silences and anarchic harmonies - was a source of music, Cage once claimed, There is no noise, ...

... of action that he associates with performative utterances. Retallack’s poems enact a “complex realist” aesthetic in their investigation of living at the interstices of purportedly exclusive, hierarchically binary categories, thereby continuing the “poethical” project that she takes up from the work of John Cage. They thus make a case for the real, if limited, effects that poetry can achieve within the context of individual readings and exemplify ways in which texts can model forms of extra-textual behavior. As readers familiar with Austin’s theoretical reception will realize, Retallack’s critique of his distinction between serious and ...

The ambient conditions were characterized by stable stratification with little synoptic influence in the lower boundary layer. In his foreword to Silence, John Cage comments on the unusual forms in much of the book: 'I have employed in them means of composing analogous to my composing means in the field of music.' Does composing words as one composes music transform those words into music only if they are to be sung? What's actually at stake here? Cage had in mind word compositions that activate a certain intuitive immediacy (in writer, performer, audience) more commonly associated with music than speech: 'My intention has ...
