To assess children's mental health service needs and utilization patterns for a state planning effort, a cross-sectional survey that sampled 822 children aged 6 to 11 of a metropolitan center was conducted. When reports of parents and teachers were combined, 38.5% of children were screened to be at risk of psychiatric disturbance. Only 11% of children at risk received treatment in mental health settings, fewer than in schools (37%) or medical settings (13%). The findings illustrate the importance ...

A search for Saccharomyces cerevisiae proteins that interact with actin in the two-hybrid system and a screen for mutants that affect the bipolar budding pattern identified the same gene, AIP3/BUD6. This gene is not essential for mitotic growth but is necessary for normal morphogenesis. MATa/alpha daughter cells lacking Aip3p place their first buds normally at their distal poles but choose random sites for budding in subsequent cell cycles. This suggests that actin and associated proteins are involved ...

The establishment of cell polarity is a central feature of morphogenesis in many types of cells (Schnepf 1986; Horvitz and Herskowitz 1992; Rodriguez-Boulan and Nelson 1993; Shapiro 1993; Priess 1994). Polarity establishment involves selection of an axis of polarization followed by the asymmetric organization of cytoskeletal elements, membranous organelles, components of the plasma membrane, and components of the extracellular matrix or cell wall along this axis. In budding yeasts such as Saccharomyces ...

Previous analysis of the bipolar budding pattern of Saccharomyces cerevisiae has suggested that it depends on persistent positional signals that mark the region of the division site and the tip of the distal pole on a newborn daughter cell, as well as each previous division site on a mother cell. In an attempt to identify genes encoding components of these signals or proteins involved in positioning or responding to them, we identified 11 mutants with defects in bipolar but not in axial budding. ...

Earlywood formation was observed in 60-year-old forest-grown red oak trees in southern Michigan. Extreme care in removing samples from the cambial region of the main stem at 1.4 m and 18 m, and from small branches at about 24 m, permitted the following conclusions. First vessel elements were initiated in the second or third xylem derivative radially removed from the previous year's latewood, possibly in overwintering derivatives, simultaneously throughout the bole and branches of the tree, some ...

This paper uses the principle of maximum entropy to construct a probability distribution of future stock price for a hypothetical investor having specified expectations. The result obtained is in good agreement with observations recorded in the literature. Thus, the paper concludes that the hypothetical individual investor is representative of a large class of investors. This new derivation of the well known random-walk theory of stock-price movements leads to an improved understanding of the model ...

Five groups of 6 fasted crossbred steers were injected IM with standard dosages of xylazine hydrochloride (0.3 to 0.5 mg/kg). At maximal sedation, the steers were injected IV with the antagonists' doxapram (1.0 mg/kg), doxapram + yohimbine (0.125 mg of yohimbine/kg), doxapram + 4-aminopyridine (4-AP; 0.3 mg of 4-AP/kg), or 4-AP + yohimbine. One group was given 1.0 ml of saline solution IV instead of antagonists. Doxapram, doxapram + yohimbine, doxapram + 4-AP, and 4-AP + yohimbine decreased mean standing time (time ...

Abstract Background Few studies have reported changes of bone mineral density (BMD) after parathyroidectomy in patients with persistent hyperparathyroidism after renal transplantation (3 HPT). Patients and Methods We retrospectively analyzed 14 patients who underwent successful parathyroidectomy for 3 HPT and who had available BMD data before and after parathyroidectomy. Results Median follow‐up time was 26 months (IQR: 16.8–40.2). Serum calcium levels decreased significantly after parathyroidectomy ( ...

Abstract The effects of radiotherapy (RT) on tumor immunity in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) are not well understood. To better understand if RT can prime antigen-specific T-cell responses, we analyzed human PDAC tissues and mouse models. In both settings, there was little evidence of RT-induced T-cell priming. Using in vitro systems, we found that tumor–stromal components, including fibroblasts and collagen, cooperate to blunt RT efficacy and impair RT-induced interferon signaling. Focal ...

Hypericum perforatum L . (St. John's wort) is used to treat mild‐to‐moderate depression. Its potential safety risks are pharmacokinetic drug interactions via cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes and P‐glycoprotein, presumably caused by hyperforin. In a phase I, open‐label, nonrandomized, single‐sequence study, the low‐hyperforin Hypericum extract Ze 117 was investigated using a drug cocktail in 20 healthy volunteers. No pharmacokinetic interactions of Ze 117 were observed for CYP 1A2, CYP 2B6, CYP 2C9, CYP ...

Abstract Objective: To determine noise intensity during middle-ear aspiration in order to evaluate whether levels can be potentially harmful. Methods: In this prospective, observational study, middle-ear effusion was aspirated following myringotomy using a suction instrument with a probe tube microphone. Sound pressure levels and duration were measured, and frequency domain analysis was performed. Results: Forty-four ears were analysed, consisting of 20 with mucoid effusion, 11 with serous effusion ...

• 9 recommendations digest recent developments in regulatory environmental risk assessment. • Efforts are necessary to make the translation of ecotoxicology into regulatory decisions more open and transparent. • They require concerted and sustained action from a variety of sectors and stakeholders. • Better evidence will lead to better decisions, sustainable innovation and a healthier environment.

The impact of recent major disasters has driven home the need for psychologist managers to incorporate disaster planning and planning for continuity of operations into their organizations' strategic planning. As a result, the Society of Psychologists in Management (SPIM) has included key sessions on this topic on the agendas of their annual conferences. This article summarizes a session from the 2007 conference that included a keynote talk by John Cavanaugh, PhD, based on an article previously published ...

We continue our trip back in time through the Mesozoic, visiting several different ecosystems across the planet. Each of these was strongly influenced by the continental breakup from a single landmass into several tectonic plates and associated landmasses during this period. During the Cretaceous, we visit the ...
