Plasticizers are additives used to soften polymers, but most of them are oily or waxy and are difficult to process in a continuous hot-melt process. The plasticizing effect of four functionalized ferulic acid derivatives designed with controlled solubility parameters was investigated upon the study of both the thermal stability and the mechanical properties of polylactic acid (PLA) blends. The synthesized powders were incorporated into PLA through a continuous hot-melt process (extrusion) allowing ...

For technical, environmental and economical reasons, industrial demands for process-fitted enzymes have evolved drastically in the last decade. Therefore, continuous efforts are made in order to get insights into enzyme structure/function relationships to create improved biocatalysts. Xylanases are hemicellulolytic enzymes, which are responsible for the degradation of the heteroxylans constituting the lignocellulosic plant cell wall. Due to their variety, xylanases have been classified in glycoside ...

We describe a combination of Confocal Raman Imaging (CRI) and quantitative image analysis to characterise biocomposite material microstructures. Both techniques offer lateral resolutions close to 1.3 μm and axial resolution of 13 μm, while simplifying sample preparation to hand-cutting without any surface preparation. Extruded and injected polycaprolactone/hemp fibre composites were used as demonstration biocomposites. A green macrobisphenol additive (bis-O-dihydroferuloyl-1,4-butanediol) was also ...

The results of a comparative study of two thermostable (1→4)-β-xylan endoxylanases using a multi-technical approach indicate that a GH11 xylanase is more useful than a GH10 xylanase for the upgrading of wheat bran into soluble oligosaccharides. Both enzymes liberated complex mixtures of xylooligosaccharides. 13C NMR analysis provided evidence that xylanases cause the co-solubilisation of β-glucan, which is a result of cell-wall disassembly. The simultaneous use of both xylanases did not result in ...

Abstract Monosodium l -glutamate (MSG)-induced obesity is a useful model for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) studies. However, there is limited data on its initiation and progression. Thus, this study aimed to characterize the onset of metabolic and histopathological features of NAFLD and its progression to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in this model. To perform this study, Swiss mice pups were neonatally injected with MSG (4 g/kg/day, s.c.) or equiosmolar saline and followed up to 60, ...

Two ferulic acid derivatives (BDF and BDF-Me) were prepared using chemoenzymatic synthesis and used as additives for the pretreatment of hemp fibers. Incorporation of these fibers into a polycaprolactone matrix by hot-melt extrusion process aimed to improve the dispersion of the fibers and the mechanical properties of the resulting materials. Young's modulus and tensile strength of the composites were investigated at the micrometer scale by chemical imaging. The very simple methylation of the phenolic ...

The diversity of the plant biomass available on earth makes plants an exceptional resource for replacing fossil resources in green chemistry, bioenergy and biobased materials. For numerous applications, and especially the high-tech ones (building block molecules, high-power bioenergy, additive manufacturing of biobased materials), the macrostructure assemblies of the plant biomass often need to be first broken down into a fine powder. This can be achieved by dry fractionation process combining comminution ...
