OBJECTIVES: This is an investigation into the longitudinal patterns of bed sharing, the characteristics associated with those patterns, and the relationship with breastfeeding. METHODS: The study used prospective, population-based data from the United Kingdom to investigate nocturnal bed sharing at 5 time points from birth to 4 years of age. Of 14 062 live births, 7447 (53%) had data available for all time points. RESULTS: Latent class analysis identified 4 mutually exclusive groups, broadly described ...

Using an error-correction model, we find deviation from historic price pass-through patterns during the immediate post-Hurricane Katrina period. Although gasoline price pass-through patterns have largely returned to their long-run equilibrium, evidence indicates that asymmetry, previously not evident, may now exist.

We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 images and Faint Object Spectrograph data of two young supernova remnants in the Magellanic Clouds, N132D (LMC) and 1E 0102.2-7219 (SMC). The spectra cover essentially the entire UV/optical range available to HST and provide the first true comparison of UV/optical line intensities from astrophysical shocks that do not depend on scalings from different aperture sizes or instruments. For the spectra, we isolated specific knots ...

Abstract A sedentary and unfit way of life leads to increased risk for several chronic diseases and premature mortality. Sedentary and unfit individuals are also more likely to develop functional limitations as they age. The precise type, amount, and intensity of physical activity required for protection needs further investigation. Traditional exercise recommendations suggest a threshold of activity that necessary for protection, although current evidence does not support a dichotomous view of ...

ABSTRACT Bat collisions are a threat to commercial and military aircraft in Australia. We examined bat strike records from Australia during 1996–2006 and found that risk of impact from bats is increasing, is greatest in tropical versus temperate regions, and is more likely during early evening and while an aircraft is landing rather than departing. Temporal patterns of bat strikes differ from those of birds, highlighting the need to employ taxon‐specific management strategies to minimize animal ...

Jennifer G. Parsons, David Blair, Jon Luly, Simon K. A. Robson,

The nocturnal behaviour of bats makes it difficult to determine their foraging habits at night, especially in regards to the height or altitude at which they fly. This is particularly true for the larger flying foxes that can travel up to 40 km in a single night(Spen cer et al., 1991; Parsons et al., 2006). Despite the value of such information for many aspects of the foraging ecology and ecophysiology of bats, gathering information on the flight altitudes used by bats remains a challenge that has ...

The shoulder joint is a complex array of muscles, tendons, and capsuloligamentous structures that has the greatest freedom of motion of any joint in the body. Acute (<2 weeks) shoulder pain can be attributable to structures related to the glenohumeral articulation and joint capsule, rotator cuff, acromioclavicular joint, and scapula. The foundation for investigation of acute shoulder pain is radiography. Magnetic resonance imaging is the procedure of choice for the evaluation of occult fractures and ...

SUMMARY: MerR is the transcriptional regulator of the mercury-resistance (mer) operon of transposon TnSO1, acting at the mer promoter as both an activator in the presence of mercuric salts and a repressor in their absence. This paper reports a method for selection of constitutive activator mutants, which activate transcription in the absence of Hg", and the characterization of these MerRAC proteins. At least two mutations in the MerR protein were found necessary for strong mercury-independent activation, ...

SUMMARY The volume of a tracheal system influences breath-holding capacity and provides an index of an insect's investment in its respiratory system. Here,we describe a new, generally applicable method to measure tracheal volume that enables repeatable determinations on live animals. Animals are isolated in a closed chamber of a known volume and equilibrated with a helium:oxygen gas mixture. The chamber is then rapidly flushed with a nitrogen:oxygen gas mixture to eliminate the helium surrounding ...

Two meta-analyses were conducted to Investigate the effectiveness of the Fishbein and Ajzen model in research to date. Strong overall evidence for the predictive utility of the model was found. Although numerous instances were identified in which researchers overstepped the boundary conditions initially proposed for the model, the predictive utility remained strong across conditions. However, three variables were proposed and found to moderate the effectiveness of the model. Suggested extensions ...

Given the overwhelming worldwide rate of infection and the disappointing pace of vaccination, addressing reinfection is critical. Understanding reinfection, including longevity after natural infection, will allow us to better know the prospect of herd immunity, which hinges on the assumption that natural infection generates sufficient, protective immunity. The primary objective of this observational cohort study is to establish the incidence of reinfection of COVID-19 among healthcare employees ...
