The durability of silicone gel-filled breast implants is of concern, but there are few epidemiological studies on this issue. To date, most of the relevant findings are derived from studies of explantation, which suffer from bias by including women with symptoms or concerns about their implants. As part of a long-term magnetic resonance imaging study of the incidence of rupture, this study involved 271 women with 533 cosmetic breast implants who were randomly selected from among women who underwent ...

Release of excitatory amino acids and dopamine plays a central role in neuronal damage after cerebral ischaemia. In the present study, we used an in vitro model of ischaemia to investigate the effects of sevoflurane on dopamine, glutamate and aspartate efflux from rat corticostriatal slices. Slices were superfused with artificial cerebrospinal fluid at 34°C and episodes of 'ischaemia' were mimicked by removal of oxygen and reduction in glucose concentration from 4 to 2 mmol litre−1 for ≤30 min. Abstract This study demonstrates the importance of the including and appropriately parameterizing peatlands and forestlands for basin‐scale integrated surface–subsurface models in the northern boreal forest, with particular emphasis on the Athabasca River Basin (ARB). With a long‐term water balance approach to the ARB, we investigate reasons why downstream mean annual stream flow rates are consistently higher than upstream, despite the subhumid water deficit conditions in the downstream regimes. ...

ABSTRACT Evidence suggests that people with strong social support have lower mortality and morbidity and better self-rated health in later life, but few studies have used longitudinal data to examine the factors that inhibit or enhance social support. This study used both quantitative data and qualitative texts to explore older women's social networks. The mixed-methods design drew participants from the 1921–26 cohort of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health (ALSWH). Regression modelling ...

PURPOSE: Radical cystectomy (RCx) is perhaps the most effective therapeutic approach for patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Unfortunately, clinical staging is imprecise and the degree of understaging remains high. This study retrospectively evaluated patients undergoing RCx with regard to pathologic outcomes and degree of upstaging to better identify features that may lessen clinical understaging. Abstract Hydroxymethylglutaryl‐CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) have been linked with potential chemopreventive effects; however, the data are conflicting. We conducted a population‐based cohort study using data from the Prescription Database of North Jutland County and the Danish Cancer Registry for the period 1989–2002. In a study population of 334,754 county residents, we compared overall and site‐specific cancer incidence among 12,251 statin users (≥2 prescriptions) with cancer incidence among ...

Global warming is widely predicted to reduce the biomass production of top predators, or even result in species loss. Several exceptions to this expectation have been identified, however, and it is vital that we understand the underlying mechanisms if we are to improve our ability to predict future trends. Here, we used a natural warming experiment in Iceland and quantitative theoretical predictions to investigate the success of brown trout as top predators across a stream temperature gradient (4- ...

Aim: The aim of this study was to examine sex differences in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use among older adults. Methods: Cross‐sectional analysis of data from two cohort studies of community‐dwelling women (n = 5399) and men (n = 3188) aged 82–87 and 77–91 years, respectively. The main outcome measure was self‐report of consultations with an alternative health practitioner. Results: Men were 1.79 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.46, 2.20) times more likely to use CAM than women. People ...

Aim: To review findings from the Men, Women and Ageing (MWA) longitudinal studies and consider their implications for national health guidelines. Methods: Guidelines for good health for older adults in the areas of body mass index (BMI), physical activity, alcohol consumption and smoking behaviours are compared with MWA findings. Results: Findings from MWA suggest that current BMI guidelines may be too narrow because BMI in the overweight range appears to be protective for both older men and women. ...

David McLaughlin, Jon D. Vanderwerff,
For Г uncountable and p ≥ 1 odd, it is shown ℓ p (г) admits no continuous p -times Gateaux differentiable bump function. A space is shown to admit a norm with Hölder derivative on its sphere if it admits a bounded bump function with uniformly directionally Hölder derivative. Some results on smooth approximation are obtained for spaces that admit bounded uniformly Gateaux differentiable bump functions.
