Background: Induced sputum is the most commonly used method to analyze airway inflammation in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients ex vivo. Due to the complex matrix of the sample material, precise and reliable analysis of sputum constituents depends critically on preanalytical issues. Objectives: Here we compared the commonly used method for sputum processing by dithiothreitol (DTT) with a novel mechanical method in regard to basal cellular parameters, neutrophil markers ...

Introduction Whereas progress in HIV testing and treatment has been made globally, the UNAIDS goal of "90 90 90" is still out of sight in rural northern Mozambique. New strategies that promote testing in hard to reach groups will aid Mozambique's response to the HIV epidemic. HIV self-testing (HIVST) is recommended by the WHO as an additional approach to augment the HIV testing services available to adolescents. This study evaluates acceptability and performance of a directly assisted oral HIVST intervention ...

The majority of emergency paediatric death in African countries occur within the first 24 h of admission. A coloured triage system is widely implemented in high-income countries and the emergency triage and assessment treatment (ETAT) is recommended by the World Health Organization, but not put into practice in Mozambique. We implemented a three-colour triage system in a rural district hospital with lay-staff workers conducting the first triage.A retrospective, before and after, mortality analysis ...

People living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) may be lost to follow-up (LTFU), which hampers the assessment of outcomes. We estimated mortality for patients starting ART in a rural region in sub-Saharan Africa and examined risk factors for death, correcting for LTFU.We analyzed data from Ancuabe, Mozambique, where patients LTFU are traced by phone and home visits. We used cumulative incidence functions to estimate mortality and LTFU. To correct for LTFU, we revised ...

Abstract This article addresses the impact of economic climate, and particularly of the Great Recession, on the configuration of educational expectations among students around 14 years old. We analyze expectations regarding educational attainment conditional on school performance and compare our results across countries with varying levels of economic growth over time. Screening household contacts of active tuberculosis (TB) patients is recommended for TB control. Due to resource constraints this rarely occurs in lower income countries. Demographic and clinical features of index cases may influence the likelihood of onwards TB transmission. It has also been proposed that accumulation of intracellular lipid bodies within M. tuberculosis cells may also enhance bacterial transmissibility. This study explored whether clinical and bacteriological observations recorded ...

Abstract In terrestrial ecosystems most plant species live in mutualistic symbioses with nutrient-delivering arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Establishment of AM symbioses includes transient, intracellular formation of fungal feeding structures, the arbuscules. A plant-derived peri-arbuscular membrane (PAM) surrounds the arbuscules, mediating reciprocal nutrient exchange. Signaling at the PAM must be well coordinated to achieve this dynamic cellular intimacy. Here, we identify the PAM-specific Arbuscular ...

Indoor environments have a large impact on health and well-being, so it is important to understand what makes them healthy and sustainable. There is substantial knowledge on individual factors and their effects, though understanding how factors interact and what role occupants play in these interactions (both causative and receptive) is lacking. Exposure to airborne particles causes detrimental health effects, hence their assessment in indoor environments, where people spend most of the time, is important. The influence of energy renovation and occupants' activities on airborne particle concentrations was assessed in seven occupied Swedish residences. Ultrafine particle (UFP, <100 nm) number concentrations, PM2.5 (<2.5 μm) and black carbon (BC, <900 nm) mass concentrations were simultaneously measured inside and outside before, after renovation, ...

Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) suffer from chronic infective lung disease, which determines morbidity and mortality. While bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, are well-known to contribute to pulmonary pathology, the relevance of fungi in CF airways remains poorly understood. The best studied fungus in CF is Aspergillus fumigatus, which frequently colonizes CF airways and causes a disease condition termed allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. Polyamidoamine dendrimers (generations 1 and 3) surface-modified with terpyridyl cobalt complexes have been prepared and characterized by electrochemical and EQCM (electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance) techniques. EQCM studies of the dendrimer complexes show that they deposit onto a Pt electrode following the Co(II/I) reduction process and that the resulting films prevent further deposition upon successive potential scanning. The effects of electron self-exchange were observed for Co(I/II) ...

Performing cyclic voltammetry at scan rates into the megavolt per second range allows the exploration of the nanosecond time scale as well as the creation of nanometric diffusion layers adjacent to the electrode surface. This latter property is used here to adjust precisely the diffusion layer width within the outer shell of a fourth-generation dendrimer molecule decorated by 64 [Ru(II)(tpy)2] redox centers (tpy = terpyridine). Thus the shape of the dendrimer molecule adsorbed onto the ultramicroelectrode ...

Megavolt-per-second cyclic voltammetry is used to control the expansion with time of a diffusion layer created within the redox outer shell of a fourth generation dendrimer molecule adsorbed onto an electrode; one quarter of the dendrimer is shown in the picture. Semi-arid regions play an increasingly important role as a sink within the global carbon (C) cycle and is the main biome driving inter-annual variability in carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake by terrestrial ecosystems. This indicates the need for detailed studies of spatiotemporal variability in C cycling for semi-arid ecosystems. We have synthesized data on the land-atmosphere exchange of CO2 measured with the eddy covariance technique from the six existing sites across the Sahel, one of the largest semi- ...

This study addresses the relationship between various family forms and the level of cognitive and non-cognitive skills among 15- to 16-year-old students. We measure cognitive skills using standardized scores in mathematics; non-cognitive abilities are captured by a composite measure of internal locus of control related to mathematics. A particular focus lies on father absence although we also examine the role played by co-residence with siblings and grandparents. We use cross-nationally comparable ...

The diffusion coefficients of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers (generations 0−4) surface-modified with terpyridyl and bipyridyl ruthenium complexes were determined using cyclic voltammetry (CV), voltammetry at a rotating disk electrode (RDE), and pulsed field gradient spin−echo nuclear magnetic resonance (PFGSE-NMR). In all experiments, the magnitude of the diffusion coefficient decreased with increasing dendrimer size, but each experimental technique led to dramatically different experimental results ...
