The rapid spread of the SARS-CoV-2 lineages B.1.1.7 (N501Y.V1) throughout the UK, B.1.351 (N501Y.V2) in South Africa, and P.1 (B.1.1.28.1; N501Y.V3) in Brazil has led to the definition of variants of concern (VoCs) and recommendations for lineage specific surveillance. In Switzerland, during the last weeks of December 2020, we established a nationwide screening protocol across multiple laboratories, focusing first on epidemiological and microbiological definitions. In January 2021, we validated and ...

We explore heavy element nucleosynthesis in neutrino-driven winds from rapidly-rotating, strongly magnetized proto-neutron stars for which the magnetic dipole is aligned with the rotation axis, and the field is assumed to be a static force-free configuration. We process the proto-magnetar wind trajectories calculated by Vlasov et al 2014 through the r-process nuclear reaction network SkyNet using contemporary models for the evolution of the wind electron fraction during the proto-neutron star cooling ...

Contrasting with increased nitric oxide (NO) formation during healthy pregnancy, reduced NO bioavailability plays a role in preeclampsia. However, no study has examined whether increased NO consumption by enhanced circulating levels of cell-free hemoglobin plays a role in preeclampsia. We studied 82 pregnant women (38 healthy pregnant and 44 with preeclampsia). To assess NO bioavailability, we measured plasma and whole blood nitrite concentrations using an ozone-based chemiluminescence assay. Plasma ...

Abstract Aim: Nitric oxide (NO) is an endogenous mediator of many physiological processes, many of which are mediated by cyclic guanosine 3′,5′‐monophosphate (cGMP). Much effort has been made to validate clinical markers of NO production or bioavailability. While the measurement of plasma nitrate, nitrite, and cGMP concentrations have been suggested to reflect endogenous production of NO, there is no study showing whether there is correlation between these three markers. In the present study, we investigate ...

When researchers develop new econometric methods it is common practice to compare the performance of the new methods to those of existing methods in Monte Carlo studies. The credibility of such Monte Carlo studies is often limited because of the discretion the researcher has in choosing the Monte Carlo designs reported. To improve the credibility we propose using a class of generative models that has recently been developed in the machine learning literature, termed Generative Adversarial Networks ( ...

Activation of the kynurenine pathway (KP) has been shown to predict outcome in cardiac arrest (CA) patients. We validated these findings in a Swiss cohort. We measured admission tryptophan and kynurenine levels in 270 consecutive CA patients (38 in-hospital CA) and investigated associations with in-hospital mortality and neurological outcome at hospital discharge. 120 of 270 (44%) patients died in the hospital. Compared to survivors, non-survivors showed higher median initial kynurenine levels (5.28 ...

Statins inhibit cholesterol synthesis and produce pleiotropic, cholesterol-independent effects including endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) stimulation and increased expression. However, a functional polymorphism in the promoter of the eNOS gene (T-786C) reduces its activity and could modulate the response to statins. Here, we examined whether this polymorphism modulates the effects of atorvastatin on the plasma levels of markers of NO formation and oxidative stress. We genotyped 200 healthy subjects ...

Abstract. This article discusses current transformations from nomadism to labor migration and tourism in the local economy in the Moroccan mountain village Ameskar Fogani. Using the concepts of field, habitus and symbolic capital of Bourdieu's "theory of practice", changes in economic practices are analyzed in relation to changes of (symbolic) meanings and perceptual categories. This perspective sheds light on the close interrelation of economic and cultural aspects of social change.

Abstract Astrocytes are thought to exert diverse functions in the brain, but it has been difficult to prove this in vivo because of a scarcity of tools to manipulate these cells. Here, we report the generation of new transgenic mouse lines that allow for conditional gene ablation in astrocytes using the tamoxifen‐ (TAM‐) inducible CreER T2 /loxP system and bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC)‐based transgenesis. In adult transgenic mice, where CreER T2 expression is driven by the promoter of the sodium‐ ...

The new SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) has been recently declared a Variant of Concern due to a series of important mutations in the viral spike protein and especially in the receptor-binding domain. While investigations into the spread of this new variant are ongoing, the first cases have been detected in Switzerland. Important questions have been raised: (1) Will the PCR assays commonly used to detect SARS-CoV-2 still work for the Omicron variant? (2) Can specific PCR features, e.g. S-gene ...

Objectives Differentiation of pancreatic cancer (PCA) from chronic pancreatitis (CP) is challenging. We searched for peptide markers in urine to develop a diagnostic peptide marker model. Methods Capillary electrophoresis–mass spectrometry was used to search for peptides in urine of patients with PCA (n = 39) or CP (n = 41). Statistical different peptides were included in a peptide multimarker model. Peptide markers were sequence identified and validated by immunoassay and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Results ...

This is an exciting time for the study of r-process nucleosynthesis. Recently, a neutron star merger GW170817 was observed in extraordinary detail with gravitational waves and electromagnetic radiation from radio to γ rays. The very red color of the associated kilonova suggests that neutron star mergers are an important r-process site. Astrophysical simulations of neutron star mergers and core collapse supernovae are making rapid progress. Detection of both electron neutrinos and antineutrinos from ...

Powdered activated carbon (PAC) for organic micro-pollutant (OMP) removal can be applied effectively on wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents by using re-circulation schemes, accumulating the PAC in the system. This technique is complex because several factors are unknown: (i) the PAC concentration in the system, (ii) specific and average contact times of PAC particles, and (iii) PAC particle loadings with target compounds/competing water constituents. Thus, performance projections (e.g. in the lab) ...

Skeletal muscle (SKM) insulin resistance plays a central role in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. Because G-protein–coupled receptors (GPCRs) represent excellent drug targets, we hypothesized that activation of specific functional classes of SKM GPCRs might lead to improved glucose homeostasis in type 2 diabetes. At present, little is known about the in vivo metabolic roles of the various distinct GPCR signaling pathways operative in SKM. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that selective ...

Abstract For next-generation weather and climate numerical models to resolve cities, both higher spatial resolution and subgrid parameterizations of urban canopy–atmosphere processes are required. The key is to better understand intraurban variability and urban–rural differences in atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) dynamics. This includes upwind–downwind effects due to cities’ influences on the atmosphere beyond their boundaries. To address these aspects, a network of >25 ground-based remote sensing ...
