This study was done to evaluate the performance of coconut fiber based organic filter in the primary treatment of swine wastewater (SWW). For each 100 L of SWW filtered, following parameters were determined in effluent: electrical conductivity and pH, concentration of total solids (TS), dissolved, suspended, fixed, and volatile solids, total nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sodium. The pH of the effluent during the first 100 L decreased, but then remained neutral until the end. The filter removed ...

Abstract BACKGROUND: Microalgae have recently been considered a potential feedstock for biodiesel production, since they do not compete with agricultural land, unlike oil crops. However, the production processes must be energetically and economically viable. Therefore, an in situ methanolysis process is proposed for biodiesel production directly from microalgae biomass, to avoid the need for the separation and extraction steps. RESULTS: Biodiesel was obtained using methanol as the methylation reactant ...

Abstract Effective estimation of wildlife population abundance is an important component of population monitoring, and ultimately essential for the development of conservation actions. Diurnal line‐transect surveys are one of the most applied methods for abundance estimations. Local ecological knowledge (LEK) is empirically acquired through the observation of ecological processes by local people. LEK‐based methods have only been recognized as valid scientific methods for surveying fauna abundance ...

Food raw materials can contain the mycotoxin ochratoxin A (OTA). Thermal processing of these materials may result in decreased OTA levels but also in the formation of the thermal isomerization product 2'R-ochratoxin A (2'R-OTA). So far, only 2'R-OTA levels reported from 15 coffee samples in 2008 are known, which is little when compared to the importance of coffee as a food and trading good. Herein, we present results from a set of model experiments studying the effect of temperatures between 120 °C ...

Significance Public interest in social and economic equality is burgeoning. We examine a related phenomenon, lifespan equality, using data from charismatic primate populations and diverse human populations. Our study reveals three key findings. First, lifespan equality rises in lockstep with life expectancy, across primate species separated by millions of years of evolution and over hundreds of years of human social progress. Second, industrial humans differ more from nonindustrial humans in these ...

Inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] is a complex chronic disorder with no clear aetiology and no known cure. Despite recent advances in overall disease management and improved therapeutics, patients with IBD still experience a substantial burden. Furthermore, as the incidence continues to increase in developing areas of the world, it is expected that the burden of IBD to society will increase and exert tremendous pressure on health care systems worldwide. Therefore, new strategies to prevent the global ...

Vaccinia virus (VACV) is a poxvirus and encodes many proteins that modify the host cell metabolism or inhibit the host response to infection. For instance, it is known that VACV infection can activate the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)/activator protein 1 (AP-1) pathway and inhibit activation of the pro-inflammatory transcription factor NF-κB. Since NF-κB and MAPK/AP-1 share common upstream activators we investigated whether six different VACV Bcl-2-like NF-κB inhibitors can also influence ...

Apparently, Rh(III)-TsDPEN is prone to severe diffusion limitations, necessitating further developments. Overall, a promising concept for chemoenzymatic redox catalysis is proposed, which may overcome some of ...

Cross sections for photon production in $\pi + \rho \to \pi + \gamma$ and $\pi + \pi \to \rho + \gamma$ scattering processes are derived from an effective chiral field theory and implemented into the hadronic transport approach, SMASH (Simulating ...

Interferometric configurations furthermore enable a simple, fixed-wavelength read-out making them particularly suitable for low-cost diagnostic and monitoring devices.
