Free radical mechanisms have been implicated in diabetic microangiopathy. Agents that scavenge free radicals may be beneficial. We assessed the scavenging ability of two sulphonylureas, gliclazide and glibenclamide, in vitro. The assay which employs o-dianisidine sensitised by riboflavin can be used to distinguish between superoxide scavengers and general scavengers. The former species lead to an augmentation while the latter has an inhibitory effect. The drugs were added in final concentrations ...

Eight cases of resistant recurrent depression were treated with a combination of nortriptyline and a new serotonin reuptake inhbitor, with or without concurrent lithium therapy. Significant improvement was seen in all patients where other drug regimes and ECT had been ineffective. No adverse reactions occurred in any of our patients, seven of whom were elderly. The combination treatment was more effective than individual therapies alone.

We examined hope as a potential resiliency factor for the daily strains of raising children with disruptive behavior disorders. In light of the motivational component of hope theory, initiating and sustaining effort toward goals (i.e., agency), we were interested in hope's relation to constructs addressing self-esteem, familial functioning, and stress. Two hundred, fifty-two parents of children with externalizing disorders completed self-report questionnaires. Significant associations were found ...

Caneel K. Joyce, Kyle E. Jennings, Jonathan Hey, Jeffrey C. Grossman, Thomas Kalil,

Creative collaborations that cross disciplinary boundaries are essential to innovation. Individuals face challenges, however, in forming new collaborations. Empirical and anecdotal evidence suggests that the common formats of brainstorming and free‐form networking are insufficient for enabling such collaborations to form. We present a potential solution called speedstorming, a pair‐wise method of creative interaction similar to the round‐robin ‘speed‐dating’ technique. Speedstorming combines an explicit ...

Field studies were conducted in 2007 and 2008 at Clinton and Faison, NC, to evaluate the influence of Palmer amaranth density on ‘Beauregard’ and ‘Covington’ sweetpotato yield and quality and to quantify the influence of Palmer amaranth on light interception. Palmer amaranth was established at 0, 0.5, 1.1, 1.6, 3.3, and 6.5 plants m −1 within the sweetpotato row and densities were maintained season-long. The excited-state structural dynamics of nickel(II)tetrakis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)porphyrin (NiTMP) and nickel(II)tetrakis(tridec-7-yl)porphyrin (NiSWTP) in a toluene solution were investigated via ultrafast transient optical absorption spectroscopy. An ultrashort stimulated emission between 620 and 670 nm from the S1 state was observed in both nickel porphyrins only when this state was directly generated via Q-band excitation, whereas such a stimulated emission was absent under B (Soret)-band excitation. ...

The success of passive immunization suggests that antibody-based therapies will be effective at controlling malaria. We describe the development of fully human antibodies specific for Plasmodium falciparum by antibody repertoire cloning from phage display libraries generated from immune Gambian adults. Although these novel reagents bind with strong affinity to malaria parasites, it remains unclear if in vitro assays are predictive of functional immunity in humans, due to the lack of suitable animal ...

Perhaps the quantum state represents information about reality, and not reality directly. Wave function collapse is then possibly no more mysterious than a Bayesian update of a probability distribution given new data. We consider models for quantum systems with measurement outcomes determined by an underlying physical state of the system but where several quantum states are consistent with a single underlying state-i.e., probability distributions for distinct quantum states overlap. Significantly, ...
