Jonathan M. Wainwright,

HISTORICAL Ambrose Pare (Paris, 1510-1590), Thomas Bartholinus (Copenhagen, 1616-1680) and Ledran (Paris, about 1778) are said to have written of carcinoma of the male breast, but it has not been possible to consult these articles. About 1820, articles on the subject began to appear in medical journals, especially in the Lancet . Liston (Lancet, 1838), one of the notable earlier reporters, while operating on a man said: Those who witnessed the operation observed that I was at no pains to preserve integument. ...

Jonathan M. Wainwright,

THE INCIDENCE OF TETANUS The present inquiry has been instigated by the occurrence of a case in which tetanus developed and proved fatal in an entirely unsuspected industrial accident; unsuspected both from the circumstances of the injury and the nature of the wound itself. Reference to government reports shows that in the U. S. Registration area the number of deaths per year from tetanus is about 1,500. Not a large figure perhaps but too large for a preventable disease and one for which we have ...

Jonathan M. Wainwright,

To the Editor: —In April, 1927, I published an article in theArchivesunder the title given. It contained a table showing data on the cases of forty-one patients who were alive at that time. This list has been followed up as well as possible, and the data so far as available at the present date are set forth in the accompanying table. Of the forty-one, no later record could be obtained from four. Eleven have since died, mostly of recurrence at the following periods after operation: eight years and ...

Abstract. The Whistler Aerosol and Cloud Study (WACS 2010), included intensive measurements of trace gases and particles at two sites on Whistler Mountain. Between 6–11 July 2010 there was a sustained high-pressure system over the region with cloud-free conditions and the highest temperatures of the study. During this period, the organic aerosol concentrations rose from <1 μg m−3 to ∼6 μg m−3. Precursor gas and aerosol composition measurements show that these organics were almost entirely of secondary ...

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is the most common skeletal developmental disease. However, its genetic architecture is poorly understood. We conduct the largest DDH genome-wide association study to date and replicate our findings in independent cohorts. We find the heritable component of DDH attributable to common genetic variants to be 55% and distributed equally across the autosomal and X-chromosomes. We identify replicating evidence for association between GDF5 promoter variation and ...

Shayan Bahadori, Jonathan M. Williams, Thomas W. Wainwright,

Through gait analysis, gait phases can be identified, the kinematic and kinetic parameters of human gait events can be determined, and quantitative evaluation can be undertaken. This data article is the first to report a comprehensive data set on a large cohort of healthy participants. Individual strides were determined from vertical force data and all kinematics and kinetic data separated into strides. Local minima and maxima were determined respectively for each anatomical region and the mean ...

The coastal waters of the North Pacific are home to the northern clingfish (Gobiesox maeandricus), Pacific spiny lumpsucker (Eumicrotremus orbis) and marbled snailfish (Liparis dennyi) - three fishes that have evolved ventral adhesive discs. Clingfish adhesive performance has been studied extensively, but relatively little is known about the performance of other sticky fishes. Here, we compared the peak adhesive forces and work to detachment of clingfish, lumpsuckers and snailfish on surfaces of varying ...

Adherence to pediatric traumatic brain injury guidelines has been associated with improved survival and better functional outcome. However, the relationship between guideline adherence and hospitalization costs has not been examined. To evaluate the relationship between adherence to pediatric severe traumatic brain injury guidelines, measured by acute care clinical indicators, and the total costs of hospitalization associated with severe traumatic brain injury.

We isolated gp100-reactive T cells from perilesional skin of a patient with progressive vitiligo with superior reactivity toward melanoma cells compared with tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes 1520, a melanoma-derived T-cell line reactive with the same cognate peptide. After dimer enrichment and limited dilution cloning, amplified cells were subjected to reverse transcription and 5' RACE to identify the variable TCRα and TCRβ subunit sequences. The full-length sequence was cloned into a retroviral vector ...
