Abstract The recent release of version 2.0-8 of the BayesMendel package contains an updated BRCAPRO risk prediction model, which includes revised modeling of contralateral breast cancer (CBC) penetrance, provisions for pedigrees of mixed ethnicity and an adjustment for mastectomies among family members. We estimated penetrance functions for CBC by a combination of parametric survival modeling of literature data and deconvolution of SEER9 data. We then validated the resulting updated model of CBC ...

Compounds similar to maitotoxin (MTX) have been isolated from several laboratory strains of the dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus spp. from the Caribbean. Mass spectral results suggest that these compounds differ from MTX by the loss of one sulfate group and, in some cases, the loss of one methyl group with the addition of one degree of unsaturation. NMR experiments, using approximately 50 nmol of one of these compounds, have demonstrated that the 9-sulfo group of MTX is still present, suggesting that ...

Despite differences in oncological behavior, the 8th edition of AJCC TNM staging currently proposes the same N-classification for major salivary glands (MSG) carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the upper aerodigestive tract. The present study aims to investigate a more reliable definition of N-categories for MSG carcinoma.A retrospective multicenter study was performed, including 307 patients treated for primary MSG carcinoma from 1995 to 2019. Outcome measures included overall survival (OS), ...

Abstract Background Fine‐needle aspiration of a salivary gland lesion is a well‐established diagnostic procedure that aids management decisions. Recently, the Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC) classification has been proposed in order to improve the reproducibility and communication in the management of salivary gland lesions. Methods A total of 375 patient's cytological reports collected between January 2010 and December 2017 were reviewed and reclassified according ...

The slow Wallerian degeneration (WldS) protein protects injured axons from degeneration. This unusual chimeric protein fuses a 70–amino acid N-terminal sequence from the Ube4b multiubiquitination factor with the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide–synthesizing enzyme nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyl transferase 1. The requirement for these components and the mechanism of WldS-mediated neuroprotection remain highly controversial. The Ube4b domain is necessary for the protective phenotype in mice, ...

Adopting the socioemotional wealth perspective, we argue that the presence of a family CEO in family SMEs negatively affects export scope, but that such negative effect is mitigated by board service. We develop and test a model that considers the synergistic combination of family management and another important aspect of family governance in the context of family firm internationalization: the service behavior of the board of directors. The empirical evidence from a sample of 248 Belgian family ...

We draw on the agency and stewardship perspectives to determine whether and how the effect of family leadership on the entrepreneurial orientation-performance relationship in small and medium (SME) family firms is contingent on the main life cycle dimensions: firm size, generational stage, and board of directors' engagement. The analyses of 284 Belgian family SMEs reveal that nonfamily leaders outperform family leaders in transforming entrepreneurial orientation into performance in larger firms, ...

Objective Our goal was to compare subjects treated with glatiramer acetate (GA) and interferon-beta (IFN-β) in terms of long-term clinical outcomes. Methods Subjects enrolled in the CLIMB who initiated either GA or IFN-β within five years of disease onset and prior to 2008 were identified (n = 150 for GA and n = 144 for IFN-β). The two treatment groups were compared in terms of long-term clinical outcomes: time to EDSS 4, time to EDSS 6 and EDSS score seven years after treatment initiation. Baseline confounders ...

Virtual surgical planning (VSP) uses patient-specific modelling of the facial skeleton to provide a tailored surgical plan which may increase accuracy and reduce operating time. The aim of this study was to perform a time and cost-analysis comparing patients treated with and without VSP-technology. A retrospective analysis of 138 patients undergoing microvascular free flap mandible (76.8%) or maxillary (23.2%) reconstruction between 2010 and 2018 was performed. The passage of a volcanic plume produced by the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull volcano in April 2010 was measured by the sun–sky radiometers of the new European SkyRad (ESR) network. This network consists of several European sites located in the U.K., Poland, Spain and Italy, and therefore was particularly suitable for monitoring the transport of volcanic ash generated by this particular volcano. The atmospheric aerosol characteristics at each site affected by the passage of the volcanic cloud, during ...

Tumor microvasculature tends to be malformed, more permeable, and more tortuous than vessels in healthy tissue, effects that have been largely attributed to up-regulated VEGF expression. However, tumor tissue tends to stiffen during solid tumor progression, and tissue stiffness is known to alter cell behaviors including proliferation, migration, and cell-cell adhesion, which are all requisite for angiogenesis. Using in vitro, in vivo, and ex ovo models, we investigated the effects of matrix stiffness ...

Head trauma is a frequent indication for cranial imaging in children. CT is considered the first line of study for suspected intracranial injury because of its wide availability and rapid detection of acute hemorrhage. However, the majority of childhood head injuries occur without neurologic complications, and particular consideration should be given to the greater risks of ionizing radiation in young patients in the decision to use CT for those with mild head trauma. MRI can detect traumatic complications ...

Band inversions are key to stabilising a variety of novel electronic states in solids, from topological surface states in inverted bulk band gaps of topological insulators to the formation of symmetry-protected three-dimensional Dirac and Weyl points and nodal-line semimetals. Here, we create a band inversion not of bulk states, but rather between manifolds of surface states. We realise this by aliovalent substitution of Nb for Zr and Sb for S in the ZrSiS family of nonsymmorphic semimetals. Using ...

Abstract Strains within the genus Salinospora have been shown to produce complex natural products having antibiotic and antiproliferative activities. The biochemical basis for the cytotoxic effects of salinosporamide A has been linked to its ability to inhibit the proteasome. Abstract Charge density waves (CDWs) in kagome metals have been tied to many exotic phenomena. Here, using spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we study the charge order in kagome metal ScV 6 Sn 6 . The similarity of electronic band structures of ScV 6 Sn 6 and TbV 6 Sn 6 (where charge ordering is absent) suggests that charge ordering in ScV 6 Sn 6 is unlikely to be primarily driven by Fermi surface nesting of the Van Hove singularities. ...
