Matthew A. Perry, Jonathan V. Trinidad, Scott D. Rychnovsky,
A simple method for determining the absolute configuration of oxazolidinones, lactams, and their derivatives using kinetic resolution catalysts is described. The optically pure substrates were acylated using the (S)-HBTM and the (R)-HBTM catalyst, and the faster reaction was determined. An empirical mnemonic was developed for the assignment of the absolute configuration based on the fast-reacting catalyst.

Latino male bisexual experience has remained under-studied and under-theorized in much of the recent sexuality research. Based on long-term ethnographic research conducted in Rio de Janeiro and New York City, this article seeks to examine the cultural patterns and social contexts in which male bisexual experiences took shape in these urban centers, and to explore and refine a number of key theoretical formulations that have been developed in recent sexuality research. It examines the ways in which ...

Deirdre C. Lyons, Kimberly J. Perry, Jonathan Q. Henry,
Gastrulation is a critical step in bilaterian development, directly linked to the segregation of germ layers, establishment of axes, and emergence of the through-gut. Theories about the evolution of gastrulation often concern the fate of the blastopore (site of endomesoderm internalization), which varies widely in a major branch of bilaterians, the Spiralia. In this group, the blastopore has been said to become the mouth, the anus, both, or neither. Different developmental explanations for this variation ...

A major health disparity suffered by African Americans (AA) is a predisposition toward fibrotic diseases of the skin, lung, and other organs. We previously showed that healthy AA and scleroderma (systemic sclerosis (SSc)) patient monocytes share biochemical and functional differences from control Caucasian (C) monocytes that may predispose AA to SSc. The central difference is a decrease in caveolin-1. Low caveolin-1 levels promote monocyte migration, their differentiation into fibrocytes, and fibrocyte ...

Abstract A case-control study of Potomac Horse Fever (PHF) was carried out on 260 horses on 41 premises in Maryland. Affected horses were compared with two control groups, one consisting of horses on the affected farms, and one of horses on unaffected farms. Variables studied included data gathered from two personal interview questionnaires, feed analysis, microbiological assay of faecal samples, and subsequent retrospective serological assay following the identification of the causative agent. A major area of interest in our laboratory is the translation of basic principles of aerosol physics into research protocols that allow the study of pulmonary physiology with application to the clinical delivery of therapeutic aerosols. These principles predict the important factors influencing particle deposition in the lung and, in clinical studies, particle size distribution, breathing pattern, lung mechanics, and nebulizer characteristics are often mentioned and recognized as governing variables. ...

The nucleoside analogue 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine (Decitabine, DAC) is one of several drugs in clinical use that inhibit DNA methyltransferases, leading to a decrease of 5-methylcytosine in newly replicated DNA and subsequent transcriptional activation of genes silenced by cytosine methylation. In addition to methyltransferase inhibition, DAC has demonstrated toxicity and potential mutagenicity, and can induce a DNA-repair response. The mechanisms accounting for these events are not well understood. ...
