Tocilizumab is an IL-6 receptor antagonist with the ability to suppress the cytokine storm in critically ill patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). We evaluated patients treated with tocilizumab for a SARS-CoV-2 infection who were admitted between March 13, 2020, and April 16, 2020. This was a multicenter study with data collected by chart review both retrospectively and concurrently. Parameters evaluated included age, sex, race, use of mechanical ventilation ( ...

Aripiprazole’s pharmacologic properties (including dopamine 2 and 5-hydroxytryptamine 1A [5HT1A] receptor partial agonism and 5HT2A receptors antagonism) may be associated with the onset of hiccups. Case Description: A 21-year-old, antipsychotic-naive patient with bipolar I disorder and remote brain trauma developed persistent hiccups following aripiprazole titration. Despite trials of metoclopramide and chlorpromazine, hiccups continued. Remission of hiccups occurred with discontinuation of aripiprazole. ...

We present a new measurement of the space density of high-redshift (z≃ 3.0–4.5), X-ray-selected quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) obtained by exploiting the deep and uniform multiwavelength coverage of the COSMOS survey. We have assembled a large (40 objects), homogeneous sample of z > 3 QSOs with X-ray flux F0.5–2 keV > 10−15 erg cm−2 s−1, and available spectroscopic (22) or photometric (18) redshifts. We discuss their optical (color–color diagrams) and X-ray properties, their number counts and space densities ...

We report on the measurement of the physical properties (rest-frame K-band luminosity and total stellar mass) of the hosts of 89 broad-line (type-1) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) detected in the zCOSMOS survey in the redshift range 1 < z < 2.2. The unprecedented multi-wavelength coverage of the survey field allows us to disentangle the emission of the host galaxy from that of the nuclear black hole in their spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We derive an estimate of black hole masses through the analysis ...

We developed a confocal real-time imaging approach that allows direct observation of the subcellular localization pattern of proteins involved in proximal FcepsilonRI signaling in RBL cells and primary bone marrow-derived mast cells. The adaptor protein Src homology 2 (SH2) domain-containing leukocyte phosphoprotein of 76 kDa (SLP-76) is critical for FcepsilonRI-induced calcium flux, degranulation, and cytokine secretion. In this study, we imaged SLP-76 and found it in the cytosol of unstimulated ...

Cell kill effects are exposure time-dependent in vitro. After 3d exposure 200 nM ON 01910.Na killed > 90% of Daudi lymphoma cells, whereas 40-fold higher drug concentration killed only 50% of cells after 24h exposure. Dogs that received CI ...

Very high frequency ultrasound (35–50 MHz) has had a significant impact upon clinical imaging of the anterior segment of the eye, offering an axial resolution as small as 30 μm. Higher frequencies, while potentially offering even finer resolution, are more affected by absorption in ocular tissues and even in the fluid coupling medium. Our aim was to develop and apply improved transducer technology utilizing frequencies beyond those routinely used for ultrasound biomicroscopy of the eye. A 75-MHz ...

The Chandra COSMOS Survey (C-COSMOS) is a large, 1.8 Ms, Chandra program that has imaged the central 0.9 deg2 of the COSMOS field down to limiting depths of 1.9 × 10−16 erg cm−2 s−1 in the soft (0.5–2 keV) band, 7.3 × 10−16 erg cm−2 s−1 in the hard (2–10 keV) band, and 5.7 × 10−16 erg cm−2 s−1 in the full (0.5–10 keV) band. In this paper we report the i, K, and 3.6 μm identifications of the 1761 X-ray point sources. We use the likelihood ratio technique to derive the association of optical/infrared counterparts ...

We treated a selected group of children attending a difficult asthma clinic with intramuscular triamcinolone acetonide. This study retrospectively reviews markers of asthma severity in those who received one or more monthly doses for three periods: 1) 3 months preceding the first injection (pretreatment), 2) from the first injection to 1 month after the last injection (treatment period), and 3) 3 months after the treatment period (follow-up period). Severity markers during the treatment and follow- ...

Elaine Silverman, Jonathan Skinner,

Many hospitals in the 1990s many hospitals were accused of "upcoding" patient diagnostic related groups (DRGs) to increase Medicare reimbursements. We find that between 1989 and 1996, the percentage point share of the most generous DRG for pneumonia and respiratory infections rose by 10 points among not-for-profit hospitals, 23 points among for-profit hospitals, and 37 points in hospitals converting to for-profit status. Not-for-profit upcoding was also higher in markets with a larger for-profit hospital ...
