Studies of probiotics, fructan-type prebiotics, and synbiotics in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) show significant heterogeneity in methodology and results. Here, we study the efficacy of such interventions and the reasons for the heterogeneity of their results. Eligible random controlled trials were collected from the PUBMED and SCOPUS databases. A total of 18 placebo-controlled and active treatment-controlled (i.e., mesalazine) studies were selected with a Jadad score ≥ 3, including 1491 patients ...

Most hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) patients are homozygous for the C282Y mutation of the HFE gene. Nevertheless, penetrance of the disease is very variable. In some patients, penetrance can be mediated by concomitant mutations in other iron master genes. We evaluated the clinical impact of hepcidin (HAMP) and hemojuvelin mutations in a cohort of 100 Spanish patients homozygous for the C282Y mutation of the HFE gene. HAMP and hemojuvelin mutations were evaluated in all patients by bidirectional direct ...

Most clinical guidelines recommend that AIDS-free, HIV-infected persons with CD4 cell counts below 0.350 × 10(9) cells/L initiate combined antiretroviral therapy (cART), but the optimal CD4 cell count at which cART should be initiated remains a matter of debate. To identify the optimal CD4 cell count at which cART should be initiated.Prospective observational data from the HIV-CAUSAL Collaboration and dynamic marginal structural models were used to compare cART initiation strategies for CD4 thresholds ...

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present SMARTxAC, a tailor‐made passive monitoring and analysis system for high‐speed IP networks. The authors also discuss the design challenges we had to face to cope with the requirements of such a system. Design/methodology/approach This system has been designed to operate at gigabit speeds without packet loss, while providing very detailed information about the network usage. Findings SMARTxAC has become a very powerful tool for the network operators ...

New advances in high-throughput technologies have allowed for the massive analysis of genomic data, providing new opportunities for the characterization of the transcriptome architectures. Recent studies in pigs have employed RNA-Seq to explore the transcriptome of different tissues in a reduced number of animals. The main goal of this study was the identification of differentially-expressed genes in the liver of Iberian x Landrace crossbred pigs showing extreme phenotypes for intramuscular fatty ...

The purpose of this paper is to analyze a finite element approximation of the stationary Navier-Stokes equations that allows the use of equal velocity-pressure interpolation. The idea is to introduce as unknown of the discrete problem the projection of the pressure gradient (multiplied by suitable algorithmic parameters) onto the space of continuous vector fields. The difference between these two vectors (pressure gradient and projection) is introduced in the continuity equation. The resulting formulation ...

In this paper we present a stabilized finite element formulation for the transient incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. The main idea is to introduce as a new unknown of the problem the projection of the pressure gradient onto the velocity space and to add to the incompresibility equation the difference between the Laplacian of the pressure and the divergence of this new vector field. This leads to a pressure stabilization effect that allows the use of equal interpolation for both velocities ...

Abstract We discuss in this paper some implementation aspects of a finite element formulation for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations which allows the use of equal order velocity–pressure interpolations. The method consists in introducing the projection of the pressure gradient and adding the difference between the pressure Laplacian and the divergence of this new field to the incompressibility equation, both multiplied by suitable algorithmic parameters. The main purpose of this paper is ...

Ramon Codina, Jordi Blasco,

In this paper we study a variational formulation of the Stokes problem that accommodates the use of equal velocity-pressure finite element interpolations. The motivation of this method relies on the analysis of a class of fractional-step methods for the Navier-Stokes equations for which it is known that equal interpolations yield good numerical results. The reason for this turns out to be the difference between two discrete Laplacian operators computed in a different manner. The formulation of the ...

Contacts between HIV-producing T cells and primary CD4+ T cells may induce the uptake of HIV by target cells that are endocytosed into trypsin-resistant compartments. We have now compared the mechanism of virus transmission from T cell-to-T cell versus infected dendritic cells (DCs)-to-T cell. In cocultures of HIV-1-infected DCs with primary CD4+ T cells, virus transmission to the target cells was resistant to trypsin treatment and could only be prevented by the anti-SUgp120 antibody IgGb12 but not ...

Background Antiretroviral therapy has changed the natural history of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in developed countries, where it has become a chronic disease. This clinical scenario requires a new approach to simplify follow-up appointments and facilitate access to healthcare professionals. Methodology We developed a new internet-based home care model covering the entire management of chronic HIV-infected patients. This was called Virtual Hospital. We report the results of a prospective ...

Regenerative therapies using adult stem cells have attracted great interest in the recent years and offer a promising alternative to current surgical practices. In this report, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of an autologous cell-based treatment of osteoarthritis using mesenchymal stromal cells expanded from bone marrow aspirates that were administered intra-articularly. Ten 2-year old ewes were divided in two groups (for analysis at 6 and 12 months, respectively). Full thickness articular ...

Background: The role of soybean dust as a causal agent of asthma has been clearly established since the Barcelona asthma epidemics in the 1980s. The large number of patients who were first seen with asthma symptoms during those epidemics provided an excellent opportunity to study the possibilities of different diagnostic tests. Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the usefulness of the skin test and amplified ELISA technique for quantifying specific IgE in the diagnosis of soybean asthma. ...

Post-translational modification by Small Ubiquitin-like Modifier (SUMO) proteins regulates numerous cellular processes. This modification involves the covalent and reversible attachment of SUMO to target proteins through an isopeptide bond, using a cascade of E1, E2 and E3 SUMOylation enzymes. Most functions of SUMO depend on the establishment of non-covalent protein-protein interactions between SUMOylated substrates and their binding partners. The vast majority of these interactions involve a conserved ...

Dermatological problems are not usually related to intensive medicine because they are considered to have a low impact on the evolution of critical patients. Despite this, dermatological manifestations (DMs) are relatively frequent in critically ill patients. In rare cases, DMs will be the main diagnosis and will require intensive treatment due to acute skin failure. In contrast, DMs can be a reflection of underlying systemic diseases, and their identification may be key to their diagnosis. On other ...

Abstract Horses revolutionized human history with fast mobility 1 . However, the timeline between their domestication and their widespread integration as a means of transport remains contentious 2–4 . Here we assemble a collection of 475 ancient horse genomes to assess the period when these animals were first reshaped by human agency in Eurasia. We find that reproductive control of the modern domestic lineage emerged around 2200 bce , through close-kin mating and shortened generation times. Reproductive ...

The objectives of this study were to assess the prevalence of transmitted HIV-1 drug resistances (TDR) and HIV-1 subtypes in recently infected patients in Catalonia between 2003 and 2005 and to describe the characteristics of these patients according to the presence or absence of TDR and HIV-1 subtype. After application of the Serological Testing Algorithm for Recent HIV Seroconversion (STARHS), residual aliquots of serum samples from recently infected antiretroviral-naïve individuals were genotyped. ...

In September 2005 the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published 12 cartoons that poked fun at Islam. In January 2006 this resulted in an explosion of angry mass protest in Muslim countries. This was part of a political-cultural confrontation in which the press became involved when they decided to publish the cartoons in defence of freedom of speech. This case study throws some light on the elements which gave rise to the controversy and have inspired similar incidents. The global dimension of the ...
