Background. Cystatin C (CysC) is an early biomarker of renal dysfunction scarcely studied in patients awaiting liver transplantation (LT). Sarcopenia is frequent in cirrhosis and impacts prognosis. We aimed to assess the capability of these factors to predict survival and acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) in patients awaiting LT, as well as early post-LT outcomes. Methods. Single-center study that included all cirrhotic patients listed for LT between 2014 and 2017. Competing risk regression analysis ...

Ticks are obligate haematophagous ectoparasites that are associated with a wide range of vertebrate hosts, among them also reptiles and amphibians. They have dynamic ecological interactions with multiple microorganisms, ranging from endosymbionts to pathogens, such as the members of the genus Rickettsia. The aim of this work was to detect Rickettsia in ticks from amphibians and reptiles from southern Mexico by the amplification, sequencing and phylogenetic reconstruction of the gltA and ompA genes, ...

This research explores the prospect of fabricating a face-centered cubic (fcc) Ni-base alloy cladding (Inconel 690) on an fcc Fe-base alloy (316 L stainless-steel) having improved mechanical properties and reduced sensitivity to corrosion through grain boundary and microstructure engineering concepts enabled by additive manufacturing (AM) utilizing electron-beam powder bed fusion (EPBF). The unique solidification and associated constitutional supercooling phenomena characteristic of EPBF promotes [100] ...

A totally effective, antimalarial vaccine must involve sporozoite and merozoite proteins (or their fragments) to ensure complete parasite blocking during critical invasion stages. This Special Report examines proteins involved in critical biological functions for parasite survival and highlights the conserved amino acid sequences of the most important proteins involved in sporozoite invasion of hepatocytes and merozoite invasion of red blood cells. Conserved high activity binding peptides are located ...

Lignin is an essential polymer in vascular plants that plays key structural roles in vessels and fibers. Lignification is induced by external inputs such as wounding, but the molecular mechanisms that link this stress to lignification remain largely unknown. In this work, we provide evidence that three maize (Zea mays) lignin repressors, MYB11, MYB31, and MYB42, participate in wound-induced lignification by interacting with ZML2, a protein belonging to the TIFY family. We determined that the three ...

CaMKIIα is expressed at high density in the nucleus accumbens where it binds to postsynaptic D3 receptors inhibiting their effects. In striatonigral projections, activation of presynaptic D3 receptors potentiates D1 receptor-induced stimulation of cAMP production and GABA release. In this study we examined whether the presynaptic effects of D3 receptor stimulation in the substantia nigra reticulata (SNr) are modulated by Ca2+ activation of CaMKIIα. In SNr synaptosomes two procedures that increase ...

We report on a new thermochromic material containing a europium complex for thermal sensing through its fluorescence response to temperature. The ratio between the strong luminescence peak of europium (III) and a side band emission is employed as a new probe for optical sensing of temperature. The ratio is observed to follow an Arrhenius-type dependence with temperature. Based on these results we developed a thermal probe based on a segment of luminescent thermometer optically cemented to the tip ...

Leishmania species of the subgenus Viannia and especially Leishmania braziliensis are responsible for a large proportion of New World leishmaniasis cases. The reproductive mode of Leishmania species has often been assumed to be predominantly clonal, but remains unsettled. We have investigated the genetic polymorphism at 12 microsatellite loci on 124 human strains of Leishmania braziliensis from 2 countries, Peru and Bolivia. There is substantial genetic diversity, with an average of 12.4 +/- 4.4 alleles ...

Spatial and temporal patterns of large fire (>100 ha) incidence in Portugal over the period 1984–2004 were modeled using extreme value statistics, namely the Peaks Over Threshold approach, which uses the Generalized Pareto Distribution (GPD) as a model. The original dataset includes all fires larger than 5 ha (30 616 fires) that were observed in Portugal during the study period, mapped from Landsat satellite imagery. The country was divided into eight regions, considered internally homogeneous from ...

The whole chromosome complement of the first polar body (1PB) was analysed by comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), while the corresponding metaphase II (MII) oocyte was analysed by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to confirm the results.Matched CGH-FISH results were obtained in 42 1PB-MII ...

Five commercial dairy plants were monitored over a 17-mo period to determine the seasonal occurrence of Clostridium spores in streams from the cheesemaking process. Every 2 mo, samples of raw milk (RM), separated cream (SC), pasteurized and standardized vat milk (PSVM), PSVM + lysozyme (PSVM+L), and manufactured cheese aged for 60 to 90 d were processed for analysis. Molecular diversity of the main species identified was determined using repetitive element palindromic PCR. The mean anaerobic spore counts ( ...

Substantia nigra pars reticulata is the output station in basal ganglia; its GABAergic neurons control the activity of thalamo-cortical premotor nuclei, thus controlling motor behavior. D1-like and D2-like presynaptic dopamine receptors on subthalamo-nigral afferents by modulation of glutamate release change the firing rate of nigral neurons; however, their relative contribution to the control of glutamate release and their pharmacological properties have not been studied. This is important since ...

Over the last two decades, goat production had significant increments around the world, particularly in developing countries (Boyazoglu and Morand-Fehr, 2001).Most of the goat milk production is used for small-scale artisan cheesemaking.Cheese properties, quality, and yield depend on milk composition, especially protein, casein, and fat content (Storry et al., 1983;Ambrosoli et al., 1988).Milk composition is also influenced by breed, age, stage of lactation, lactation number, month of sampling, nutrition, ...

It recently was reported that Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) patients and mdx mice have elevated levels of caveolin-3 expression in their skeletal muscle. However, it remains unknown whether increased caveolin-3 levels in DMD patients contribute to the pathogenesis of DMD. Here, using a genetic approach, we test this hypothesis directly by overexpressing wild-type caveolin-3 as a transgene in mice. Analysis of skeletal muscle tissue from caveolin-3- overexpressing transgenic mice reveals: ( i ) a ...

Summary The objective was to evaluate the effect of body condition score (BCS) at 30 days before calving (−30 days) induced by a differential nutritional management, parity and week of lactation (WOL) on milk yield and composition, and milk casein and fatty acid composition. Primiparous and multiparous Holstein cows with high BCS (PH, n = 13; MH, n = 9) and low BCS (PL, n = 9; ML = 8) under grazing conditions were sampled at WOL 2 and 8 (before and after peak of lactation).
