Changes in chemical nitrogen fractions and ruminal degradability of wilted and ensiled temperate forages were studied.Seven cultivated pastures from Uruguayan farms were sampled for their study in each of the following silage-making steps: fresh forage (F), wilted forage (W), and silage (S).Samples were analysed for crude protein (CP), soluble protein in buffer phosphate (SP), and neutral and acid detergent insoluble nitrogen (NDIN and ADIN).The degradability of dry matter (DM) and nitrogen (N) were measured ...

The Almendares River watershed covers a large portion of Havana, Cuba and is centrally important to both recreational and other activities in the region. In order to assess current water quality conditions prior to planned remediation efforts, the spatial distribution of six heavy metals and other compounds were determined in river sediments at fifteen sampling stations in the watershed. Metal concentrations in sediments ranged from 86.1 to 708.8 for Zn, 39.3 to 189.0 for Pb, 71.6 to 420.8 for Cu, ...

Cerium-manganese mixed oxides with different composition were prepared by co-precipitation, characterized and evaluated for the water–gas shift (WGS) reaction. Base metal (5 wt.% Cu and 5 wt.% Ni) catalysts supported on Ce–Mn mixed oxides were also tested for the WGS reaction. The activity of the bare supports is higher in the mixed samples than in pure ceria or manganese oxide. This result can be explained by a combination of greater reducibility and surface area in the mixed samples. Addition of ...

In this paper we apply a model of early industrialization to the case of New Zealand and Uruguay in 1870–1940. We show how differences in agricultural institutions may have produced different development paths in two countries which were similar under many respects. While in New Zealand the active role of the Crown in regulating the land market facilitated access to land, in Uruguay land was seized by a small group of large landowners. Our model shows that land concentration may have negatively ...

Platelets from patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) exhibit a hyperreactive phenotype. Here, we found elevated P-selectin exposure and platelet-leukocyte aggregates indicating activation of platelets from essential thrombocythemia (ET) patients. Single-cell RNA-seq analysis of primary samples revealed significant enrichment of transcripts related to platelet activation, mTOR, and oxidative phosphorylation in ET patient platelets. These observations were validated via proteomic profiling. ...

A series of Mn–Ce(M) solids (M = K or Na), with molar ratios 100–0, 50–50 and 0–100 were prepared by co-precipitation of manganese and cerium nitrate from NaOH or KOH solutions at pH = 11. In addition, part of the solids precipitated with NaOH were dried and impregnated with a Cu2+ salt. The solids were characterized by XRD, Specific Surface Area, XPS and EDS. The characterization analyses show the formation of Mn mixed oxides with different oxidation states (Mn3+, Mn4+), for samples without Ce or Mn– ...

SummarySix cases of accidentally diagnosed cystic calcification of the liver were studied. Four of the patients were Colombian and the other two, an Argentinian and a German, had lived in Colombia for years. The calcifications were all very similar and in endemic areas of hydatid disease would have been considered to be calcified hydatids. Five of the patients were alive and in good health but one of the Colombian patients died of a carcinoma of the prostate. A non-specific calcified cyst containing ...

Density functional theory calculations (DFT + U) were performed on a low doping Mn–Ce composite oxide prepared from experimental data, including X-ray diffraction (XRD) and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). We considered a 12.5% Mn-doped CeO2 solid solution with fluorite-type structure, where Mn replaces Ce4+ leading to an oxygen-deficient bulk structure. Then, we modeled the adsorption of phenol on the bare Ce0.875Mn0.125O1.9375(1 1 1) surface. We also studied the effect of water adsorption and ...

The gliding motility of the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii and its invasion of cells are powered by an actin-myosin motor. We have studied the spatial distribution and relationship between these two cytoskeleton proteins and calmodulin (CaM), the Ca(2+)-dependent protein involved in invasion by T. gondii. A 3D reconstruction using labeling and tomographic studies showed that actin was present as a V-like structure in the conoidal part of the parasite. The myosin distribution overlapped that ...

Toxoplasma gondii, the agent causing toxoplasmosis, is an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite. A calcium signal appears to be essential for intracellular transduction during the active process of host cell invasion. We have looked for a Ca2+-transport ATPase in tachyzoites and found Ca2+-ATPase activity (11-22 nmol Pi liberated/mg protein/min) in the tachyzoite membrane fraction. This ATP-dependent activity was stimulated by Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions and by calmodulin, and was inhibited by pump inhibitors ( ...

Trained immunity (TI) is a de facto innate immune memory program induced in monocytes/macrophages by exposure to pathogens or vaccines, which evolved as protection against infections. TI is characterized by immunometabolic changes and histone post-translational modifications, which enhance production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. As aberrant activation of TI is implicated in inflammatory diseases, tight regulation is critical; however, the mechanisms responsible for this modulation remain elusive. ...

However, strategies that specifically enhance mitochondrial respiration to promote T cell function remain limited. Here we report that 3-hydroxy- l -kynurenamine (3-HKA) is a biogenic amine produced via an alternative pathway of tryptophan metabolism. In vitro, 3-HKA has an anti-inflammatory profile by inhibiting the IFN-γ mediated STAT1/NF-κΒ pathway in both mouse and human dendritic cells (DCs) with a consequent decrease in the release ...

We hypothesized that aging-associated inflammation promotes the development of platelet hyperreactivity and increases thrombotic risk during aging. We identified tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) as the key aging-associated proinflammatory ...
