The nearest-neighbor random-exchange Heisenberg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain ($s=\frac{1}{2}$) is studied at low temperatures via an approximate renormalization-group method. This entails renormalization of the random-exchange coupling constant $J$ and of the probability law for $J$. ${P}_{0}(J)$. After $n$ iterations we find that the renormalized probability function ${P}_{n}({J}^{(n)})$, a function of the renormalized coupling ${J}^{(n)}$, develops singular behavior for small ${J}^{(n)}$, independent ...

The low-temperature thermodynamic properties of a random antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in zero magnetic field are studied approximately by a renormalisation group method. The couplings J obey a probability distribution function P(J) approximately 1/Jalpha , with alpha a constant. It is found that the susceptibility chi and the specific heat C behave like chi approximately T- alpha chi and C approximately T1- alpha c at low temperatures alpha chi and alpha c are weakly varying functions of temperature ...

We study the mass spectra, production, and decay properties of the lightest supersymmetric $CP$-even and $CP$-odd Higgs bosons in models with spontaneously broken $R$ parity. We compare the resulting mass spectra with expectations of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), stressing that the model obeys the upper bound on the lightest $CP$-even Higgs boson mass. We discuss how the presence of the additional scalar singlet states affects the Higgs production cross sections, both for the Bjorken ...

The Higgs boson may decay mainly to an invisible mode characterized by missing energy, instead of the Standard Model channels. This is a generic feature of many models where neutrino masses arise from the spontaneous breaking of ungauged lepton number at relatively low scales, such as spontaneously broken R-parity models. Taking these models as framework, we reanalyze this striking suggestion in view of the recent data on neutrino oscillations that indicate non-zero neutrino masses. We show that, ...

Recently Babu, Ma, and Valle proposed a model of quark and lepton mixing based on ${A}_{4}$ symmetry [Phys. Lett. B 552, 207 (2003)]. Within this model, the lepton and slepton mixings are intimately related. We perform a numerical study in order to derive the slepton masses and mixings in agreement with present data from neutrino physics. We show that, starting from threefold degeneracy of the neutrino masses at a high-energy scale, a viable low-energy neutrino mass matrix can indeed be obtained in ...

Neutrinoless double beta (ββ0ν) decay is considered within bilinear R-parity breaking supersymmetry, including the full one-loop corrections to the neutrino-neutralino mass matrix. Expected rates for ββ0ν decay in this model are discussed in light of recent atmospheric and solar neutrino data. We conclude that (a) tree-level calculations for ββ0ν decay within the bilinear model are not reliable in the range of parameters preferred by current solar and atmospheric neutrino problems. And (b) if the solar ...

Low energy supersymmetry with bilinear breaking of R-parity leads to a weak-scale seesaw mechanism for the atmospheric neutrino scale and a radiative mechanism for the solar neutrino scale. The model has striking implications for collider searches of supersymmetric particles. Assuming that the lightest SUSY particle is the lightest neutralino we demonstrate that (i) The neutralino decays inside the detector even for tiny neutrino masses. (ii) Measurements of the neutrino mixing angles lead to predictions ...

Little is known about whether individual or subclasses (saturated, polyunsaturated [n-6 and n-3], and trans fatty acids) of serum NEFAs relate to CHD mortality and nonfatal MI. In general, the conductivity-temperature curves of impurity semiconductors should be affected by the rate of heating. An arrangement is described by which such curves can be recorded with rates of heating up to 5,000 centigrade degrees per second. Extensive tests made on lead sulphide films in an oxygen atmosphere lead to conclusions about the stages of oxidation.

A goal of gerontology is discovering aging phenotypes that reflect biological aging distinct from disease pathogenesis. Biomarkers that strongly and independently associated with mortality and that statistically attenuated chronologic age could be used to define such a phenotype. We determined the association of a Biomarker Index (BI) with mortality and compared it with a validated Physiologic Index (PI) in older adults. The indices were constructed in the Cardiovascular Health Study, mean (SD) age ...

Results of drift mobility measurements by the recent method of the authors4) on three common organic polymers are given and compared. At 80 °C the hole mobility in practically amorphous polystyrene (5 × 10−5 cm−1V−1). It is 5 orders of magnitude greater than in 95% crystalline polyethylene. It is suggested that this is not due to the differences in chemical structure, but that the characteristic chain folding in polyethylene produces strong localisation. The temperature dependence of the hole mobility ...
