The identification of aberrant cellular pathways and dysfunctional molecules important in neoplastic transformation has begun to provide us with a number of targets for drug development. It is likely that many of these agents will be incorporated into our existing treatment strategies that include cytotoxic agents. Sorafenib, a multi-kinase inhibitor has been approved in the United States for the treatment of renal cell carcinoma as well as hepatocellular cancer. Its potential role in hematological ...

This paper investigates trends in energy intensity in Latin American countries over the last 40 years. It applies the Fisher Ideal Index to decompose the energy intensity into the relative contributions of energy efficiency and the activity mix, and then analyzes the determinants of these energy indexes through panel data regression techniques. Finally, the paper compares the performance of Latin American countries to that of a similar set of countries chosen through the synthetic control method. The ...

Mutations in presenilin genes are linked to early onset familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD). Previous work in non-neuronal cells indicates that presenilin-1 (PS1) associates with cytoskeletal elements and that it facilitates Notch1 signaling. Because Notch1 participates in the control of neurite growth, cultured hippocampal neurons were used to investigate the cytoskeletal association of PS1 and its potential role during neuronal development. We found that PS1 associates with microtubules (MT) and microfilaments ( ...

Experiments were performed to identify arginase isoforms expressed in primary and transformed rodent macrophages and to determine the molecular mechanisms for the previously observed increase in arginase activity in macrophages cultured in hypoxia or anoxia. Results demonstrate the following: 1) mRNA and protein for hepatic-type AI arginase are expressed in primary cultures of rat and mouse peritoneal macrophages and are enhanced seven- and ninefold, respectively, by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). 2) ...

Background: Cardiovascular mortality is decreasing but remains the leading cause of death world-wide. Respiratory infections such as influenza significantly contribute to morbidity and mortality in patients with cardiovascular disease. Despite of proven benefits, influenza vaccination is not fully implemented, especially in Latin America. Objective: The aim was to develop a regional consensus with recommendations regarding influenza vaccination and cardiovascular disease. Methods: A multidisciplinary team ...

Music in captioning is often represented by only its title and/or a music note. This representation provides little to no information of the intended effect or emotion of the music. In this paper, we present a software tool that was created to enable users to mark emotions in a script or lyrics and then render those marks into animated text for display as captions. A pilot study was conducted to collect initial responses to, preferences and understanding of the animated lyrics of one song by a deaf ...

In 1970, searching for the interspecies transmission of influenza viruses led to the first study on influenza viruses in domestic animals. Birds and mammals, including human beings, are their natural hosts; however, other animals may also play a role in the virus epidemiology. The objective was to investigate the incidence of influenza viruses in adult dogs raised in rural (9, 19.56%) and urban (37, 80.43%) areas in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Dog serum samples were examined for antibodies to ...

Alkyne hydroamination is an effective approach for the production of enamines and enamine-containing N-heterocycles. However, stereoselectivity control is a considerable challenge in this reaction because of the electronic repulsion between an incoming nitrogen lone pair and the alkyne π-system. Herein, we propose a methodology involving β-regio- and Z-selective alkyne hydroamination by using tetrafluoro-λ6 -sulfanyl (SF4 ) alkynes under superbasic, naked anion conditions. The reaction is compatible ...

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is a group of autosomal recessive disorders of adrenal steroidogenesis. Disorders in steroid 21-hydroxylation account for over 95% of patients with CAH. Clinically, the 21-hydroxylase deficiency has been classified in a broad spectrum of clinical forms, ranging from severe or classical, to mild late onset or non-classical. Known allelic variants in the disease causing CYP21A2 gene are spread among different sources. Until recently, most variants reported have ...

This paper revisits the relationship between private participation, regulatory governance and the performance of the electricity sector in 18 Latin American countries over the last five decades. Private investment flows have been consistent overtime, providing around 55 % of total electricity investment in the region. The cell wall of Saccharomyces cerevisiae is an important source of β-d-glucan, a glucose homopolymer with immunostimulant properties. The standard methodologies described for its extraction involve acid and alkaline washings, which degrade part of its glucose chains and reduce the final yield. In the present study, an optimized methodology for extraction of β-d-glucan from S. cerevisiae cells, involving sonication and enzyme treatment, with a yield of 11.08 ± 0.19%, was developed. Cortical spreading depression (SD) is a spreading disruption of ionic homeostasis in the brain during which neurons experience complete and prolonged depolarizations. SD is the basis of migraine aura and is increasingly associated with many other brain pathologies. Here, we study the role of glutamate and NMDA receptor dynamics in the context of an ionic electrodiffusion model. We perform simulations in one (1D) and two (2D) spatial dimension. Our 1D simulations reproduce the "inverted saddle" shape ...

The M-rGO hybrids (M = Pt, Ni-, Co and Fe) were justified for the transformation of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF). High glucose → 5-HMF conversion was yielded depending on the nature of the M-rGO catalyst. The Ni-rGO showed the highest 5-HMF yield. The conversion reaction tuned to the optimized ...

TK2 gene encodes for mitochondrial thymidine kinase, which phosphorylates the pyrimidine nucleosides thymidine and deoxycytidine. Recessive mutations in the TK2 gene are responsible for the 'myopathic form' of the mitochondrial depletion/multiple deletions syndrome, with a wide spectrum of severity. The aim of the present study was to assess the direct effect of lithium on cAMP dependent phosphorylation. The results show that lithium, but not rubidium, at therapeutic and high concentrations significantly decreases the cAMP stimulated MAP2 endogenous phosphorylation in microtubule fraction. An inhibitory effect of lithium has also been found using purified heat stable microtubule proteins phosphorylated by the catalytic subunit of PKA. These data suggest a direct effect of lithium on the cAMP ...

Recent years have witnessed an upsurge in the development of methods for estimating current source densities (CSDs) in the neocortical tissue from their recorded local field potential (LFP) reflections using microelectrode arrays. Among these, methods utilizing linear arrays work under the assumption that CSDs vary as a function of cortical depth; whereas they are constant in the tangential direction, infinitely or in a confined cylinder. This assumption is violated in the analysis of neuronal activity ...
