Background The prevalence of obesity has increased in Spain in recent years. Obese women are at increased risk for sexual dysfunction, and important remission of this condition has been previously reported with bariatric surgery. Objectives The major aim of this study was to assess the effects of the Scopinaro biliopancreatic diversion on female sexual dysfunction (FSD) using a validated Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). Methods Eighty sexually active women with morbid obesity and with FSD underwent ...

The authors report the case of a 50-year-old woman with a benign intermuscular lipoma of the gluteus compressing the sciatic nerve in its course through the sciatic notch. This benign soft-tissue tumor extended into the pelvis, displacing the rectum laterally. Resection was necessary to alleviate symptoms and prevent irreversible damage of the nerve. Wide exposure of the piriformis muscle and sciatic nerve via a transgluteal approach allowed safe lesion removal, and thus avoiding a laparotomy to ...

Abstract Gastrointestinal stromal tumors ( GIST ) can represent a source of substantial gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Bleeding is described as a frequent cause of clinical presentation and commonly patients received surgical treatment on an urgent basis to drain the hematoma. However, a literature review has shown that perforation with peritonitis is very uncommon and rarely reported. These tumors are usually located in the stomach, and primary ileal and Meckel's localization is rare, occurring in less ...

A basic component of any hydrogeological study is the magnitude and temporal variation of groundwater recharge. This can be difficult to assess accurately, particularly in arid and semi-arid rainfed mid-mountain zones, as is the situation in the rural, low population density zones of North-Central Chile. In this study, recharge in the Punitaqui Basin, North-Central Chile, was characterized, contrasting the results of two methods: a modified Thornthwaite-Mather (MTM) and discharge recession analysis ( ...

Abstract This study presents an analysis of up to 30 years of hydrological variables and selected water quality parameters (pH, SO 4 , Fe, Cu, and As) in the upper area of the Elqui River basin in North‐Central Chile. A correlation analysis determined statistically significant positive relationship for SO 4 ‐Cu, Fe‐As, and Fe‐Cu. In terms of historical behaviour, no statistically significant trends were detected for precipitation or temperature. In contrast, for flow, there is an overall decreasing ...

We exploit a variational characterization of the nuclear norm to extend the framework of distributed convex optimization to machine learning problems that focus on the sparsity of the aggregate solution. We propose two distributed dynamics that can be used for multi-task feature learning and recommender systems in scenarios with more tasks or users than features. Our first dynamics tackles a convex minimization on local decision variables subject to agreement on a set of local auxiliary matrices. ...

Abstract Sedimentary fans are key targets of exploration on Mars because they record the history of surface aqueous activity and habitability. The sedimentary fan extending from the Neretva Vallis breach of Jezero crater's western rim is one of the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover's main exploration targets. Perseverance spent ∼250 sols exploring and collecting seven rock cores from the lower ∼25 m of sedimentary rock exposed within the fan's eastern scarp, a sequence informally named the “Shenandoah” ...

The immune system plays a key role in the protective response against oral cancer; however, the tumor microenvironment (TME) impairs this anti-cancer response by modulating T helper (Th) responses and promoting an anti-inflammatory environment. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) and Th2 effector cells (Teff) are associated with poor prognosis in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). However, the main immunomodulatory mechanisms associated with the enrichment of these subsets in OSCC remain unknown. We characterized ...

This paper evaluates the fatigue behavior of cement-treated recycled pavement materials. Six mixtures with different cement contents and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) percentages were tested under static and cyclic flexural loading. Cement content was the main factor affecting strength, whereas RAP percentage showed major effect in strain at break. Similar moduli were obtained under both loading conditions, which is useful for design by allowing estimating resilient modulus through static results. ...
