SYNOPSIS We report a series of 11 patients who developed headaches during intracranial endovascular procedures performed for the treatment of arteriovenous malformations (10 cases) or aneurysms (1 case). Headache was precipitated either by balloon inflation (3 cases) or by embolization (8 cases), and had a very constant pattern. In all cases the pain started suddenly, reaching maximum intensity at once. Headache was focal, unilateral, ipsilateral to the occluded artery, nonthrobbing and short‐lasting ( ...

Cystoseira (Sargassaceae) is a genus of marine brown algae composed of about 40 species, which is distributed along the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. The biological potential of the Cystoseira genus has been investigated and several activities have been reported. Chemically, this genus contains a wide variety of secondary metabolites, such as terpenoids, steroids, phlorotannins and phenolic compounds. Additionally, other chemical components as, for instance, carbohydrates, triacylglycerols/ ...

Headache is a common symptom after cerebral angiography, although it has seldom been studied. We aimed to evaluate the frequency of headache at 24 h and 6 months after angiography and to describe its characteristics. We used a cross-sectional survey of consecutive patients submitted to angiography and determined headache presence and its characterization. Headache occurrence was analyzed against headache history, clinical data, technical and demographical variables. Of 107 procedures studied, 51. ...

Deciding how to manipulate an object to fulfill a goal requires accessing different types of object-related information. How these different types of information are integrated and represented in the brain is still an open question. Here, we focus on examining two types of object-related information–tool-gesture knowledge (i.e., how to manipulate an object), and tool-gesture production (i.e., the actual manipulation of an object). We show a double dissociation between tool-gesture knowledge and tool- ...

PurposeHereditary spastic paraplegias compose a group of neurodegenerative disorders with a large clinical and genetic heterogeneity. Among the autosomal recessive forms, spastic paraplegia type 11 is the most common.MethodsTo better understand the spastic paraplegia type 11 mutation spectrum, we studied a group of 54 patients with hereditary spastic paraplegia. Mutation screening was performed by PCR amplification of SPG11 coding regions and intron boundaries, followed by sequencing. For the detection ...

ABSTRACT Background. Although large-scale, randomized trials involving children have been completed and their results demonstrate an absence of neurobehavioral effects from clinical exposure to mercury amalgam, neurological findings from such studies have not been reported. Methods. The authors conducted a randomized, prospective trial examining the safety of dental amalgam in which 507 children aged 8 through 12 years were assigned to treatment with either amalgam or resin-based composite. This paper reports impossible-differential (ID) attacks on reduced-round versions of the Rijndael cipher with text blocks larger than 128 bits. These attacks follow the framework of the attacks by Biham-Keller and Cheon et al. on the AES, and reach up to seven rounds of large-block Rijndael variants. Even though these ciphers are not standardized as FIPS, like the AES, it is important to evaluate the security of the other Rijndael versions since they provide larger internal states when used as primitives ...

Abstract The aoudad ( Ammotragus lervia Pallas 1777) is an ungulate species, native to the mountain ranges of North Africa. In the second half of the twentieth century, it was successfully introduced in some European countries, mainly for hunting purposes, i.e. in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Italy, and Spain. We used neutral genetic markers, the mitochondrial DNA control region sequence and microsatellite loci, to characterize and compare genetic diversity and spatial pattern of genetic structure ...

Familial hemiplegic migraine is a rare autosomal dominant subtype of migraine with aura. Three genes have been identified, all involved in ion transport. There is considerable clinical variation associated with FHM mutations. Genotype–phenotype correlation studies are needed, but are challenging mainly because the number of carriers of individual mutations is low. One exception is the recurrent T666M mutation in the FHM1 CACNA1A gene that was identified in almost one-third of FHM families and showed ...

Timing of mobilization after chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) surgery is highly heterogeneous among neurosurgical centers. Past studies have suggested that early mobilization may reduce medical complications without increasing recurrence, but evidence remains scarce. In this work, a series of porphyrazines (Pzs) containing electron-withdrawing groups and central MII ions (where M = Mg, Zn, Cu, and Co) were synthesized and investigated as catalysts for the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides. Then, the efficiency of the Pzs was tested by varying cocatalyst type and concentration, epoxide, temperature, and pressure. MgIIPz bearing trifluoromethyl groups (1) showed the best ...

A major principle of organization of the visual system is between a dorsal stream that processes visuomotor information and a ventral stream that supports object recognition. Most research has focused on dissociating processing across these two streams. Here we focus on how the two streams interact. We measured how unconscious ...
