Antennal morphology and funicular sensilla of male and female papaya fruit fly, Toxotrypana curvicauda Gerstaecker, were studied with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Antennae were 3-segmented, consisting of a scape, a pedicel, a flagellum or funiculus that bears the arista. Antennal segments of males showed a trend toward slightly greater dimensions than those of females, but the differences were not significant. Numerous microtrichia as well as trichoid, basiconic, clavate, and ...

The purpose of this study was to compare the long-term effectiveness among danazol, corticosteroids, cytotoxics, and dapsone in the treatment of hematological manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Medical charts of all patients seen at the Rheumatic Disease Unit from January to December of 1998 were reviewed. Patient characteristics, disease and treatment information were collected. The main outcome measures were the cause of and time to discontinuation of drugs used to treat hematological ...

Abstract Background Gene expression analysis by reverse transcription quantitative PCR (qPCR) is the most widely used method for analyzing the expression of a moderate number of genes and also for the validation of microarray results. Several issues are crucial for a successful qPCR study, particularly the selection of internal reference genes for normalization and efficiency determination. There is no agreement on which method is the best to detect the most stable genes neither on how to perform ...

Changes in the uptake of many drugs by the target cells may dramatically affect the pharmacological response. Thus, downregulation of SLC22A1, which encodes the organic cation transporter type 1 (OCT1), may affect the response of healthy hepatocytes and liver cancer cells to cationic drugs, such as metformin and sorafenib, respectively. Moreover, the overall picture may be modified to a considerable extent by the preexistence or the appearance during the pathogenic process of genetic variants. Some ...

The gold was in situ incorporated on the BiOCl/BiVO4 powders through the chemical reduction of HAuCl4 using ascorbic acid as reducing agent. X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy were conducted to perform the textural, structural and composition characterizations ...

The historically recent domestication of fishes has been essential to meet the protein demands of a growing human population. Selection for traits of interest during domestication is a complex process whose epigenetic basis is poorly understood. Cytosine hydroxymethylation is increasingly recognized as an important DNA modification involved in epigenetic regulation. In the present study, we investigated if hydroxymethylation plays a role in fish domestication and demonstrated for the first time ...

Particularly, HRTEM was used to calculate the crystallite size, d-spacing and assigned plane of all BiVO4 samples. The photoactivity of the as-synthesized BiVO4 was measured ...

In the polishing process, the wear tends to be greater when the tool extends beyond the edge of the workpiece. A linear pressure distribution (between the tool and the workpiece) has been used to explain this effect, however, this model also can predict negative pressures. This could mean that material is deposited instead of being removed. We present a new pressure distribution proposal, which presents like a skin effect. This means that the pressure is significantly higher at the border points ...

A simple camera calibration method based on the principle of phase encoding and coordinate transformation is proposed. We use a reference coordinate frame encoded as a phase distribution by multiplexing the x and y directions. From this, we suggest a phase demodulation system. The coordinate transformation induced by the imaging is exploited to estimate the intrinsic and extrinsic camera parameters by using the least-squares method. Thus, a robust and noniterative estimation scheme is obtained. ...

It has been observed recently that the resonant Raman scattering (RRS) peak of an X-ray spectrum contains information about the chemical environment of the irradiated matter. This information is extracted with complex processing of the spectrum data. Principal component analysis (PCA) is a statistical multivariate technique that allows exploring the variance–covariance structure of a set of data, through a few linear combinations of the original variables. This methodology can be applied to obtain ...

This work presents an overview of a novel spectroscopic tool: Energy Dispersive Inelastic X-ray Scattering (EDIXS) spectroscopy. By the application of EDIXS, the local chemical environment of an element of interest can be characterized in a variety of experimental conditions. EDIXS makes use of core-level resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS), taking advantage of the benefits of an energy dispersive detection system and multivariate methods for the data analysis. As result, the proposed methodology ...

Cancer development, growth, and metastasis are highly regulated by several transcription regulators (TRs), namely transcription factors, oncogenes, tumor-suppressor genes, and protein kinases. Although TR roles in these events have been well characterized, their functions in regulating other important cancer cell processes, such as metabolism, have not been systematically examined. In this review, we describe, analyze, and strive to reconstruct the regulatory networks of several TRs acting in the ...

According to Preston [J. Soc. Glass Technol. 11, 214 (1927)], the wear on a glass point in the polishing process is proportional to the work given by frictional force between glass and tool. He supposed that the frictional coefficient is a constant value. To verify this hypothesis, we measured the dragging forces applied to a tool as a function of the relative speed between a rotating glass and the tool center. To reproduce these experimental results, it was necessary to propose a new model, for which ...
