On the basis of morphological evidence, the species involved in South American Pacific coast harmful algal blooms (HABs) has been traditionally recognized as Alexandrium catenella (Dinophyceae). However, these observations have not been confirmed using evidence based on genomic sequence variability. Our principal objective was to accurately determine the species of Alexandrium involved in local HABs in order to implement a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for its rapid and easy detection ...

A detailed review is given of recent developments, status, and prospects of molluscan aquaculture on the Pacific coast of South America. A brief history of the fishery and cultivation efforts reveals that in Colombia (Pacific coast), Ecuador, and Peru the production of molluscs is entirely based on the natural resources and is chiefly restricted to mussels, scallops (Chlamys purpurata), and the mangrove cockles of the genus Anadara. Culture activities in these three countries are still in a preliminary ...

Abstract Introduction Critically ill patients can develop hyperglycaemia even if they do not have diabetes. Intensive insulin therapy decreases morbidity and mortality rates in patients in a surgical intensive care unit (ICU) and decreases morbidity in patients in a medical ICU. The effect of this therapy on patients in a mixed medical/surgical ICU is unknown. Our goal was to assess whether the effect of intensive insulin therapy, compared with standard therapy, decreases morbidity and mortality ...

Polymers have interesting physicochemical characteristics such as charge density, functionalities, and molecular weight. Such attributes are of great importance for use in industrial purposes. Understanding how these characteristics are affected is still complex, but with the help of molecular dynamics (MD) and quantum calculations (QM), it is possible to understand the behavior of polymers at the molecular level with great consistency. This study was applied to polymers derived from polyacrylamide ( ...

Caiman latirostris is a species with temperature dependent sex determination (TSD), which implies that the incubation temperature of the eggs is the main factor that determines the sex during a thermo-sensitive period (TSP). However, estrogens play a critical role in this process. The administration of 17β-estradiol (E2) previous to TSP overrides the effects of male incubation temperature, producing phenotypic females. This effect has been defined as sex reversal or estrogen-induced sex determination ( ...

Marine mammal mass strandings have occurred for millions of years, but their origins defy singular explanations. Beyond human causes, mass strandings have been attributed to herding behaviour, large-scale oceanographic fronts and harmful algal blooms (HABs). Because algal toxins cause organ failure in marine mammals, HABs are the most common mass stranding agent with broad geographical and widespread taxonomic impact. Toxin-mediated mortalities in marine food webs have the potential to occur over ...

Abstract The prediction of the final particle size for reactive systems such as the reactions of suspension polymerization is a complex matter. Thus, the preparation of very small microparticles is specially challenging, probably because of the coalescence of the polymeric beads taking place during the later stages of the polymerization. In this work, very small gel‐type styrene‐ co ‐divinylbenzene beads were synthesized by using a previously determined set of experimental synthesis conditions in ...

Abstract Failure of axon regeneration after traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is attributable in part to the presence of inhibitory molecular interactions. Recent evidence demonstrates that activation of Eph signaling pathways leads to modulation of growth cone dynamics and repulsion through the activation of ephexin, a novel guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF). However, little is known about the expression and modulation of Eph molecular targets in the injured spinal cord. In this study, we ...

The impact of outdoor and indoor pollution sources on indoor air quality in Santiago, Chile was investigated. Toward this end, 16 homes were sampled in four sessions. Each session included an outdoor site and four homes using different unvented space heaters (electric or central heating, compressed natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, and kerosene). Average outdoor fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations were very high (55.9 microg x m(-3)), and a large fraction of these particles penetrated ...

An extension of the gauge group $SU(2{)}_{L}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}U(1{)}_{Y}$ of the standard model to the symmetry group $SU(4{)}_{L}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}U(1{)}_{X}$ (3-4-1 for short) is presented. The model does not contain exotic electric charges and anomaly cancellation is achieved with a family of quarks transforming differently from the other two, thus leading to FCNC. By introducing a discrete ${Z}_{2}$ symmetry we obtain a consistent fermion mass spectrum, and avoid unitarity violation of ...

Specific inhibitors and zymograms of A. longinaris hepatopancreas extracts showed four trypsins (14.79, 15.49, 16.60, 17.38 kDa, respectively) and three chymotrypsins (21.38, 22.91, 27.54 kDa, respectively). Our results suggest that proteolytic activity ...

The present study describes the activity and some characteristics of proteinases in the hepatopancreas of red shrimp Pleoticus muelleri during the different stages of the molting cycle. Proteolytic activity was highest between pH 7.5 and 8. The hepatopancreatic protein content in the premolt stage was higher than in the other stages of the molting cycle (P<0.05). No significant differences were found in total proteolytic activity in the hepatopancreas when comparing molting stages. The proteolytic ...

Ripening and dilation of the rat cervix at term involves a widespread reduction in the density and organization of collagen fibers following a polymorphonuclear eosinophilic invasion. These are hormonally regulated events; however, the correlation between hormonal milieu and these morphological changes is not well understood. To investigate the role of preparturient relaxin and estradiol-17β (E2) in cervical collagen remodeling and eosinophilic infiltration, pregnant rats were either sham-ovariectomized ( ...

The numerical propagation of an optical field from an aperture to infinity can be performed by the combined used of the angular spectrum and Fresnel–Fraunhofer transform numerical methods. There is a limit, computed by considering the correct sampling of the impulse response of the free space, which dictates the boundary of application of each method. In this work, the limits of application for these two numerical methods to compute the propagation of optical fields are evaluated. Angular spectrum ...

In mammals, estrogens have been described as endocrine and paracrine modulators of neuronal differentiation and synapse formation. However, the functional role of circulating estrogens and the distribution of estrogen receptors (ERs) in the cerebral cortex of reptiles have not been clearly established. Caiman latirostris (C. latirostris) is a South American species that presents temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD). By using immunohistochemistry, we have studied the distribution of ERα in ...

The Honduran white bat, Ectophylla alba (Allen 1982), is one of eight species belonging to the family Phyllostomidae that exclusively roosts in tents. Due to its restricted distribution, habitat specificity, and diet requirements, E. alba has been strongly affected by habitat loss and fragmentation during the last decade. In this study, we developed the first genomic resource for this species; we assembled and analyzed in detail the complete mitochondrial genome of E. alba. The mitogenome of E. alba ...
