Liquid mixing in tall tanks agitated by multiple radial turbines can be modelled by a cascade of well-mixed compartments with backflows. Models have been proposed with different numbers of compartments per stage of agitation. In this paper, the five simplest models are compared in their ability to predict mixing times and concentration transients, and in their requirement for adjusted parameters. Examined models have from 1 to 4 compartments per agitation stage. The model which consists of 3 compartments ...

Blending of viscous newtonian liquids was studied in dual- and triple-turbine agitated tanks. The dimensionless power, mixing and interstage flow numbers were all found to be dependent on the Reynolds number as long as the full development of turbulence was inhibited by viscosity (Re < 2 × 104) and they were found to be constant above that limit. The complexity of the transitional regime makes it adverse for simple correlation, but, surprisingly, modelling of mixing in the upper transition region (Re > ...

The exponential growth of electric and hybrid vehicles in the last five years forecasts a waste problem when their batteries achieve end-of-life. Li-ion batteries for vehicles have been assembled using materials from natural resources (as Li, Fe, Al, Cu Co, Mn and P). Among them, LiFePO4 cathode materials have demonstrated advantages such as charge–discharge cycles, thermal stability, surface area and raw materials availability (against Ni and Co systems). Due to the performance, LFP batteries stand ...

Disintegrins are small cysteine-rich proteins found in a variety of snake venom. These proteins selectively modulate integrin function, heterodimeric receptors involved in cell-cell and cell-matrix interaction that are widely studied as therapeutic targets. Snake venom disintegrins emerged from the snake venom metalloproteinase and are classified according to the sequence size and number of disulfide bonds. Evolutive structure and function diversification of disintegrin family involves a stepwise ...

Timber-framed architecture is an important heritage common of many countries. However, this is being lost due to natural decay but also climatic changes and natural hazards. To preserve it, it is important to understand the influence of such actions. Timber joints significantly affect the mechanical performances of timber-framed buildings, being the weakest element. In this paper, results are presented from cyclic pull-out test conducted on traditional timber joints subjected to wind driven rain ...

The aim of this study is to understand and explain different dimensions of absorptive capacity and the strategies used in practice to realise it. The theoretical and conceptual contribution of the study lies in the adoption of a dual process and structure approach, aiming at identifying, respectively, how learning takes place and what learning takes place. The study is based upon a case study research design to explore the manifestation of absorptive capacity processes and its relationship to knowledge ...

Timber joints represent the governing part of a timber structure, particularly when assessing its seismic response. In order to better assess the seismic capacity of traditional timber frame structures, particularly timber-framed shear walls, pull-out and in-plane cyclic tests were carried out on their joints (half-lap joints). The aim is to better understand the influence of the joints on the walls and their influence on failure mechanisms and capacity. Their seismic characterisation was obtained ...

Gummosis is an aggressive disease caused by the necrotrophic fungus Lasiodiplodia theobromae (Pat.) Griffon & Maubl that threatens commercial cashew orchads in Brazil. To study the molecular mechanisms involved in the cashew response to L. theobromae, a proteomic analysis of stems from the commercial cashew clone BRS 226 (resistant) was conducted at early times post-artificial infection. In addition, changes in the stem proteome profiles of gummosis resistant and susceptible cashew plants grown under ...

Scaffolding is at the heart of tissue engineering but the number of techniques available for turning biomaterials into scaffolds displaying the features required for a tissue engineering application is somewhat limited. Inverted colloidal crystals (ICCs) are inverse replicas of an ordered array of monodisperse colloidal particles, which organize themselves in packed long-range crystals. The literature on ICC systems has grown enormously in the past 20 years, driven by the need to find organized macroporous ...

Abstract A new method to characterise the coefficient of friction of textile fabrics is proposed. The principle is based on the dry clutch, where an annular shaped flat upper body that is kept still, rubs against a lower flat surface, which rotates around a vertical axis at a constant angular velocity. Friction coefficient between the two contacting surfaces is then proportional to the level of the dragging torque between them, measured by means of a precision reaction torque sensor. Contact pressure ...

Bovine growth hormone has been used in dairy cattle to increase milk production, but it also increases the twin parturition rate. This effect is mediated by insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), which prevents follicular atresia by hindering apoptosis of granulosa cells. The action of GH and IGF-I on testicular function remains unclear. The goal of this study, therefore, was to verify the effects of short-term administration of GH and induced IGF-I release on the number of testicular germ cells, testicular ...

Abstract We constrained the tectonic evolution of the intracratonic Cretaceous Rio do Peixe Basin (RPB) in NE Brazil, combining structural and Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility (AMS) data. We analyzed the structural features of four sites along two major faults bordering the basin, the NE‐striking Portalegre Fault and the E‐W‐striking Malta Fault. AMS data from 42 sites in the syn‐rift sandstone suggest two stretching directions driving the opening of the RPB. The early syn‐rift phase I resulted ...

Abstract Background: Since the first description of the central venous catheter (CVC) in 1952, it has been used for the rapid administration of drugs, chemotherapy, as a route for nutritional support, blood components, monitoring patients, or combinations of these. When CVC is used in the traditional routes (eg, subclavian, jugular, and femoral veins), the complication rates range up to 15% and are mainly due to mechanical dysfunction, infection, and thrombosis. The peripherally inserted central catheter ( ...
